#TBT Dua Lipa x Versace 'La Vacanza' Show: The Ultimate Mob Wife Attire
I decided to launch Throw Back Thursday's to talk about shows and collections that I feel need more love and appreciation and with the "mob wife" aesthetic taking over tiktok there is no better collection—or brand—to exemplify this than the Versace 2023 'La Vacanza' collaboration between Versace—which is it Versac-A or Versac-E, I need the discourse to end—and Dua Lipa.
In my life I have only ever seen two Versace shows. The first being SS98 where Naomi Campbell is seen wearing a short-sequined, purple dress and giving a very dramatic performance that included holding a gun and the SS24 show that featured a very new Natalia Bryant to the runway—I would give a review of this show and my thoughts on this generations models as a whole on tiktok—but the 'La Vacanza' collection by far will be in my top three. It captures everything that I understand about Versace. The luxury, the glamour but most importantly, that Miami culture that both Gianni and Donatella loves so much.
Growing up in Florida, I could not turn my head without seeing Versace being displayed on someone's back or bag. The intricate chainlink designs and brightly patterned pieces would leave me feeling dazed and confused—I am more of a quiet luxury man—but there's something about this collection that allowed me to finally see the theatricality of the brand. Pantsuits that would feature a holster top; model's hair being teased into a Priscilla Presley-esque updo or being wrapped in a towel to keep those Miami tresses from drying out, and kittens heels being paired with a complete polka dotted ensemble the drama and attitude of these pieces are the perfect ode to both the mob wife and the Miami vice aesthetic. Everything about this collection is exactly the kind of costume design that you would expect to see in a show like Sofia Vergara's 'Griselda'. A Netflix series that explores the story of one of the most infamous female crime lords.
But don't just take my word for it, make sure you watch the show below and check out some of my favorite pieces when you're done.
