Although, if I'm being honest, I don't really know what shame is anymore. I've spent the better part of the last decade publicly embarrassing myself, oversharing to complete strangers, and saying things that should've stayed inside my own brain. I'm glad you found them entertaining, though. It's nice to know my complete lack of a filter has brought at least one person joy. Even if it did cost you an hour of your life.

How dare you. I have never broken a promise. I've merely... repeatedly postponed fulfilling it. Which is very different. Yes, I'm back in New York! I wrapped the movie in Prague a little while ago, so your unofficial Manhattan landlord is officially home. Which is perfect timing because your room, yes, your room at this point, is exactly where you left it. And obviously we're getting bagels. I've built them up way too much at this point, so if you don't cry after the first bite, I'm going to take it as a personal insult. I'm really excited to see you, though. It's been way too long.

You should be honored. It's an exclusive club. Also, that's adorable that you think you'd make me break first. I've spent years surviving scenes with a bunch of idiots, and I say this lovingly. My laugh reflex has been battle-tested. I could absolutely see us coming out the other side as besties. Trauma bonding over ruined takes has to count for something. Okay, dropping our names around, that's a lot of pressure. I think I can phone Marty Scorsese; we recently finished a movie together. Not to name drop or anything.

Did you really just say that? It made me laugh for a whole five minutes because nothing else could be more true. I enjoy watching you twist yourself around and get all riled up. You've officially set the stakes incredibly high on this I hope you know. I am 100% coming over now and I can only see it resulting in a winwin for me. Either I first hand get to see this chaos genius or I get the absolute story to tell everyone else for the rest of my life. I'm willing to risk my digestive tract just to see how the sentence , 'you wont believe what she made me eat' ends. But I also feel this is just a ploy to get me in your place. Oh shhh. I spend enough time getting myself into trouble without you sitting in the front row laughing every time my mouth outruns my brain. The worst part is I'll hear myself say something, immediately realize how it sounded, and then somehow make it worse trying to explain it. You enjoy watching it far too much. And now I'm feeling the pressure because you've somehow turned dinner into an event. I hope you realize there's a very real chance you show up expecting some grand culinary experiment and I hand you a perfectly normal plate of pasta because I got scared. And excuse me, a ploy? I can't believe you'd accuse me of something so... incredibly accurate. I know my audience. If I'd just said, come over, let's hang out, it'd be boring. But mention mysterious leftovers with the potential to become a legendary story? Suddenly I've got your attention. You admitted you're coming willingly. I didn't even have to bribe you.

i don't know. i think deep down you actually love it. not going to lie - judging that you even forgot but happy to be the one reminding you. there's no recovering from the bread slaps. might as well pack it all up and become a recluse after that. i know it might sound mean but just think of how fun it'll be for me. that has to mean something. but i can dial down on the oscar performance just a little so you get the real vibes. that good? i actually can't blame you since this year it's feeling nonstop like the surface of the sun out. i've been giving the AC more love than i have in years.

I don't love it. I tolerate it because arguing with you only seems to make you stronger. Shut up, don't judge me. Mom brain is a real thing. It gets rid of the things we don't need.. and actually, some of the things we do need as well, but oh well. I appreciate your compromise, though. Tone the performance down to Golden Globe level. I still want enough honesty to know if I accidentally made hockey pucks instead of cookies, but not so much honesty that I question every life choice that's led me to baking. Also, look at us. The two people who used to act like summer was the greatest thing ever are now talking about air conditioning. Somewhere our younger selves are deeply disappointed in us.

I was literally thinking the other day that it's been far too long since we've been in the same room. Parenthood and work have really conspired against us, haven't they? I'm doing good, though. I wrapped a movie in Prague, so I'm finally back in New York trying to remember what a normal routine feels like. When are you coming to steal me away? you know what? this reminds me that i'm overdue for a status or award or something commemorating this title. thank you for that. better to be called an idiot by him than an idiot sandwich. please do. not to brag but i'm actually professional level in the taste testing business. i know you've seen my brilliant acting credits so don't worry, if i hate it, i'll put on an oscar worthy performance. fair, this heat feels like someone left to door open to hell but once it goes down to normal, the sun is my bestie.

I hate that I might've contributed to your legacy. Also, thank you for reminding me about the idiot sandwich. Somehow that's more comforting. I'd rather be called an idiot than have bread slapped on either side of my face. Oscar worthy performance? Now I'm going to spend the entire time watching your face, wondering if you're genuinely enjoying the cookies or if you're method acting your way through one. I think that's meaner than just telling me they're bad. I respect your relationship with the sun from a safe, air-conditioned distance. I'll join you once the outside stops feeling like I'm being slowly braised alive.

that’s fair. there’s been times when i’ve had to do them and i was bordering on breaking. funny enough those moments of breaking are some of my favorites for something like snl. it’s given us some of the best sketches. i think the 2.0 will be my best yet considering i’ve got the stamp of approval and some inside scoop.

the breaking is my favorite part too. It's satisfying to watch people who are incredibly good at what they do completely lose it for a second. If you're going to do Jennifer Lawrence 2.0, I need at least one moment where she says something that absolutely should've stayed inside her head... realizes it half a second too late... and then just commits to it anyway. That would probably be the most accurate impression you've ever done.

Thank you! It was a wild one. It's called What Happens at Night, a gothic psychological horror thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, with Leo DiCaprio and me. I'm really excited for people to see it. And trust me, the kids provide enough material to keep me entertained between projects. I'm trying to embrace the normal schedule while I have it, though. How are things on your end?

It is? Shit, I've gotta stop being nice to you, it's not right. Um, you know how I know how to deal with kids who do that? Because I'm a grown ass adult who still does that shit. I know their games.

You being nice to me feels weird, I don't hate it though. So come on, keep telling me how amazing I am. I mean, now that you say it, that might be the only reason I think you'll succeed. Most adults try to reason with kids. You just join them.

i think you're massively underestimating the power of an american accent. yours has people hanging onto every word too. the british accent is all smoke and mirrors. the second i say something remotely profound, i immediately ruin it by asking where the nearest greggs is. dormant sounds healthy, but in practice i spent about three days enjoying it before i started wondering whether i should learn italian, renovate my house, or whatever. i think actors are just fundamentally incapable of relaxing without inventing a project for themselves. i think you're selling yourself short. the fact you relate so deeply to people is half the reason everyone likes talking to you in the first place. the 2011 story might be entirely unnecessary, but i bet it makes whoever you're talking to feel a little less alone. now that's a negotiation i can get behind. we'll call it emotional intelligence 101.

Now you're just trying to make me feel better because there's absolutely no way people would hang onto every word I say. I swear actors are the only people who take time off and immediately turn it into another job. Have you actually tried to learn Italian? I wanted to learn Spanish, but I have a short attention span. And thank you. That's a really kind way of looking at it. I've always worried I overshare because I don't have that little voice in my head that goes, maybe keep this one to yourself. But if it makes people feel less weird or less alone, then maybe it's not the worst personality flaw to have. So it's settled. Dinner and a lesson on emotional intelligence. My place or yours?

you are so welcome. it really was a trip, but i loved it. you are? this already sounds like the most epic movie, i will be sat for it. you are so good at comedy, i feel like it is something i can never do. so i will stick to being all the sad girls. i was over for a fashion show with ysl, it was amazing.

I don't buy that for a second. I think you'd be great at comedy. Half of it is just committing to the bit and not caring if you look ridiculous for a minute. That said, the world does seem to love making you cry beautifully on screen. And yes, the Miss Piggy movie is either going to be the greatest idea anyone's ever had or a complete fever dream. YSL in Paris? That's about as glamorous as life gets. Did you actually get to enjoy Paris, or was it one of those trips where you blink and suddenly you're back on a plane?

I've dealt with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Nicholas Hoult for years. I'm resilient. So what's one more annoying man? Nothing I can't handle. And yes, if we ever work together, it has to be a comedy. I don't think either of us could keep a straight face long enough to survive a serious drama. Also, careful what you wish for with the lead role opposite me. That means you're stuck with me for months. By week three you'll be calling your agent asking if there's still time to recast. But I do like your vision. I have a feeling we'd either make a really fun movie... or get banned from set forever.

Oh, absolutely do not take it back. Boldness looks good on you and honestly, exploring your rabbit hole is the best offer I've had all week. I respect a person who stands by their chaotic kitchen experiments. It takes real confidence to defend it and even more to invite me over to witness the madness firsthand. Just promise me if I dive into your culinary wonderland, you'll protect me from whatever successful experiments are currently lurking in the back of your fridge.

I've always been bold. Much to my own dismay, honestly. My mouth has been making decisions on my behalf for years. The difference is that most people politely pretend not to notice. You, apparently, are choosing to encourage me. And listen, my fridge isn't the danger. My fridge is perfectly civilized. It's what happens when I start looking at the leftovers and start thinking weird things. That's where history gets made. So yes, come over. I'll feed you something that will either restore your faith in my cooking or become another story you tell people with the sentence, you are never going to believe what Jennifer Lawrence made me eat.

there was a truth to time moving right along at its usual pace, even in the face of events that made it feel like time had stopped, and nicholas had been experiencing that juxtaposition ever since his separation. but instead of sitting in it, he built a world outside of his own sadness and the feeling everything familiar had dropped from under him, somewhere he felt okay. distractions were always the center of this world, and lately nicholas had given himself plenty of them: work, travel, basketball, women, filling the time when he wasn't spending it with his children, anything to keep the chance for quiet contemplation at bay. so far, the act had worked since to anyone who didn't know him well, nicholas seemed fine. he could pretend to be fine and convince even himself that he was fine if no one around him was particularly worried about him. but the people who knew him best could also tell that things with him weren't normal in any sense of the word, could see the fraying in the attempts to keep his sadness away and the frantic, almost chaotic energy to keep moving so he didn't have to stop and think. and it was why nicholas had barely talked to the people closest to him, only occasionally talking to his parents and siblings, and sending sparce texts to close friends if he hadn't ignored them altogether. it explained why he kept things brief and somewhat cursory in his communications with jennifer, the i'm fine and nothing's wrong that he knew she'd see right through, along with his pretending. and for the moment, he just didn't want to be called out, wasn't ready for the reality that anyone could see through his act.

that particular day on set wasn't unusual, with nicholas happily losing himself in playing lex luthor before he retreated to his trailer, having said his usual goodbyes to cast and crew. and even though he'd already gone through the script enough times to have memorized his lines, nicholas stretched his long legs and kicked his heels up on a nearby counter, scanning over the next day's scenes since it was preferable to parsing through anything going on in his own head. when nicholas heard the knock on his trailer door, he didn't initially think it was unusual and expected one of his castmates. only when jennifer suddenly stepped past the threshold, full-naming him, no less, did nicholas' initial curiosity turn to complete surprise. for a moment, he was so stunned that he couldn't quite wrap his mind around her actually being there, though his brand of humor always prevailed even when a bit speechless. "i didn't assume i needed to send proof of life," he started, already having lowered his feet back to the floor, while his gaze never left jennifer. it slowly dawned on him just how much effort it’d taken to get there, not just the flight, but getting past security, and certainly having to sign multiple ndas. "what… what are you doing here?" nicholas near stammered and finally stood up, still a bit in shock, even if part of him was relieved to see her, was soothed by the familiarity she provided. "not that i’m unhappy you’re here, i just… wasn’t expecting you to show up on set. still full of surprises after all this time," he offered with a small smile.

Jennifer stood there for a second, taking him in. That was the thing about knowing someone for as long as she'd known Nick. Most people would've looked at him and thought he looked good. Healthy. Put together. They would've seen the easy smile, the familiar humor, the version of Nicholas Hoult he'd perfected over the years. She saw the spaces between all of that. The tiredness sitting just behind his eyes. The smile that arrived a fraction too late. The way he'd asked what she was doing there as if the answer wasn't painfully obvious. Her expression softened. "You know," she began, slipping her hands into the pockets of her jacket as she wandered further into the trailer like she'd been invited hours ago, "I had this whole speech prepared on the flight." She looked around absentmindedly, inspecting the trailer before glancing back at him. "It was going to be very dramatic. Maybe a guilt trip. I was even going to tell you that ignoring me is incredibly offensive because that's my personality trait." She paused. "...Then I got here." Her voice became quieter. "And suddenly none of it felt important."

Jennifer closed the distance between them until she was standing only a couple of feet away. Close enough to read him, but not so close that he'd feel cornered. "I know you keep telling me you're fine." She shrugged gently. "And maybe you are. Maybe you're even convincing yourself of it some days." Her eyes stayed on his. "But I've known you for too long to mistake busy for okay." Silence settled between them, comfortable in the way only old friendships could be. She smiled then. "So... I figured I'd stop asking over the phone." Another tiny shrug. "I had a free week. Cooke's got the boys. You stopped replying to my texts like a civilized human being." Her lips twitched. "It felt like the logical next step was to fly across the country, sign a stack of NDAs, and inconvenience Warner Bros. Regular Tuesday" She reached out, absentmindedly straightening the collar of his shirt before giving the center of his chest two light pats. "I didn't come here to make you talk." She let that hang there. "I came here because I missed my friend." Another pause. "And whether you spend the next hour telling me everything or absolutely nothing..." she smiled, "...you're stuck with me tonight." She glanced toward the trailer door. "I've already cleared my schedule." Looking back at him, she tilted her head, a familiar spark of mischief returning to her eyes. "So, are you going to hug me, or did becoming Lex Luthor make you emotionally unavailable too?"
