A painting of joy and pain,
Of laughter and strife,
Of spirit and death,
Of love and life

sharing this essay that i wrote for my philippine literature final where we had to creatively write + make a zine :>> she's a little heavy handed on the metaphors, but i'm still proud of her nonetheless !! i've always wanted to explore my thoughts and experiences in regards to my relationship with my regional language (bikol), so i'm really thankful that this class gave me a chance to finally bring that into fruition<33 also also this was very loosely inspired by "The Haunted" by Grace Talusan as this assignment required me to use one of the works that we discussed in class. consider giving that a read as well, especially if you'd like a bit more context for the conclusion of my essay, where i explicitly reference it :>>

Help my family in gaza.🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸❤️❤️❤️🍉🍉🍉
My name is Mohamed Saqr, and just a short time ago, my family and I were living a life full of hope and stability in Gaza. We had worked hard for everything we had – multiple homes, a farm, and several successful businesses. Life was good, and we were building a future for ourselves. My brother, 24, recently married, and we were both proud of the lives we had built. But all of that changed in a heartbeat when the war began on October 7th.
this is my brother, Motaz Saqr, who had to undergo surgery in his stomach due to the pollution we are exposed to daily.
This is my house, before and after, im newly married and this was the house we were supposed to live in but the war happened and it turned into rubble since the war.
Since that day, everything we knew has been taken away from us. We were forced to flee our homes, leaving behind everything we had worked for. We lost our homes, our farm, and our businesses. Now, my family and I are constantly on the move, trying to find safety and shelter wherever we can. The fear we live with every day is unimaginable. We move from one camp to another, never knowing when or where the next attack might come. My brother’s children cry every night, scared of the loud explosions that seem to be getting closer with each passing day.
This is my brother’a daughter, this is the condition we are living in during the war.
Every day is a struggle just to survive. Food, water, and medicine are scarce, and we never know if the next meal will come. My wife, my brother, his wife, and their children are doing everything we can to stay strong, but it’s getting harder by the day. We’ve lost so much, but the hardest part is the constant fear for our lives. We’ve already witnessed too much destruction, and we know the situation could get even worse.
We started this GoFundMe because we need help. We need funds not only to survive but also to try and escape Gaza before it’s too late. We are asking for your support – anything you can give will make a huge difference in our lives. Your generosity could help provide food, clean water, and medical supplies, and it might even help us find a way out of this nightmare. Please, if you can, help us. Every donation brings us one step closer to safety and a chance at rebuilding our lives.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Urgent update my little brother is dying 😭
Today we took our little brother to the hospital because he suffers from an infection that affects his breathing and causes him pain. I hope that every living conscience will help us save our young son’s life and donate any amount you can.
Unfortunately, there is no treatment in the hospital for my little. Help us before it is too late.

Thoughts on Big 4 after UP ranked down
October 16, 2022
Sometime around 01:40 AM
Understandably, I get the jokes on TikTok. I really do. But, this was in my head before dozing off. I just needed to jot it somewhere before I forgot.
“Big 4” was never about university rankings. “Big 4” was always about prestige and tradition. It doesn’t matter if your university ranked higher; culture alone shall be the dictator. “Big 4” was always meant to be exclusive, continuously discriminating those who can’t have or afford it.

i may or may not start writing a multi-chapter piece of fiction. it won’t be perfect, but choosing to write it might just help improve my writing.
19 Before 20
Today, I turn twenty years old. Honestly speaking, I don’t feel as different from what I was last year. Though, throughout the years I collect lessons and pieces of wisdom that I try to incorporate in my everyday life.
As I have only been twenty for less than twenty-four hours, I have yet to find out what the newest lesson or piece of wisdom it. But without further ado, here are the 19 before 20:
1. Immediate regrets will come and go, but don’t make decisions that will cause lifetime regrets.
2. You can’t always blame the universe for everything wrong in your life. You cannot be entitled. The world simply does not revolve around you.
3. There are things you simply cannot control, but the one thing you can control is how you respond to adversaries.
4. Pessimism is not realism. Looking at every scenario negatively is as bad as looking at every scenario positively.
5. Rest is necessary. Taking breaks doesn’t mean giving up or forgetting your goals.
6. Balance is achievable, but it is not easily attainable.
7. The best decisions are sometimes the most unexpected decisions.
8. You will not and cannot please everyone, but make sure that you are pleasing yourself.
9. Friends don’t just join the party, they stick around to help clean-up after.
10. Always give your 100%. Even the smallest of tasks and experiences matter.
11. One part may not be a whole, but one part makes up a whole.
12. Go at your own pace. You and only you are the driver your journey.
13. It might not be possible to win every war, but it is possible to keep your flame burning and prevent it from extinguishing.
14. There is nothing wrong with trying hard until you get it right. Trying is better than doing nothing.
15. Before you love others, you must first learn how to love yourself.
16. Do not love in spite of flaws. Love with and/or because of flaws.
17. Cherish every second. Do overs don’t always exist, and if they do, they won’t be the same as the first experience.
18. The ‘best version’ of yourself doesn’t exist, but the ‘better version’ of yourself does. Perfect’s not worth it if it only stunts growth.
19. Moving on and moving forward are not exactly the same.
And soon enough, I’ll find out the 20th…

Mosquito Season
The rainy season has come upon us earlier than normally expected (Climate change? I think, yes). With the rainy season comes other things. One of those other things? Mosquitoes.
Now, let’s not lie. Mosquitoes are annoying. Not only do they bite, they also bring illness, and worst of all, kill. I just spent thirty good minutes of my life trying to eradicate mosquitoes out of a bedroom. Unfortunately, I don’t think I was successful at clearing. Because just when I think they’re all gone, another shows up. And who’s to say that when you clear all the mosquitoes in your room they’ll cease to exist, right?
Life just simply doesn’t work that way. We can take down mosquitoes one by one in one room, but in another they multiply. For a moment we can fix the mosquito issue but it doesn’t mean we don’t stop being vigilant over mosquitoes.
In a perfect world, we probably won’t have to worry about mosquitoes. But alas. We do not live in a perfect world. Mosquitoes will continue to multiply; different versions of another showing up at different stages in life.
We cannot stay complacent when we’ve finally eradicated the mosquitoes in our room. Mosquitoes eventually come back to bite. And when we we later fix that problem, we must be better than what we were when we started.
04:45 AM thoughts from an anxious first-time voter
I got home already and decided to share these thoughts about elections anxiety. Even as I share these now I am nervous, probably even more than now.
I had a difficult time sleeping last time (though difficult is honestly a huge understatement). I leave with my family to go to the precinct in less than an hour yet my body is somehow glued to the bed, too anxious about what will happen next. I barely got any sleep last night and the moment my snooze alarm rang I couldn’t go back to my sleep. I tried again, but it was useless. So I scroll on Twitter.
My body isn’t trembling, in fact it feels close to numb. However, I still feel tremors oddly enough. This election is so crucial. For change. For the freedom of our nation. But what the actual hell. Nothing will ever happen if I stay in bed, right? By 04:52 AM I gotta shake this off. Get hydrated. Run to get dressed. And eventually, leave the house to vote.
