"Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying."
"It's not necessary. My nightmares are usually about losing you," he says. "I'm okay once I realize you're here."
"I think...you still have no idea. The effect you can have."
well in the epilog katniss didnt really seem to want the children or feel anything for them but went through with it becuase "peeta wanted them so badly" so theyre sort of right becuase "woman pushed into having children she didnt want , possibly traumatising hermore becuase of someones desires" is a very anti choce stance.
See, thatâs the prevailing viewpoint, but Iâve always had a problem with it. Itâs so widely accepted by the fandom, but it ignores that the birth of those children fulfills both the character and thematic arcs of the series.
Letâs look at the entire quote.
They play in the Meadow. The dancing girl with the dark hair and blue eyes. The boy with blond curls and gray eyes, struggling to keep up with her on his chubby toddler legs. It took five, ten, fifteen years for me to agree. But Peeta wanted them so badly. When I first felt her stirring inside of me, I was consumed with a terror that felt as old as life itself. Only the joy of holding her in my arms could tame it. Carrying him was a little easier, but not much.
At first glance, it looks kind of bad. Like Peeta pushed her into having children despite her bone-deep terror. But this overlooks the fact that Peeta waited those five, ten, fifteen years for her to be ready. If he wasnât concerned about Katnissâ choice, Peeta could have been more forceful in taking what he wanted. He could have left her and found a woman more willing to provide children. But he didnât. And that heavily suggests that Katniss, in the end, is the one who made the choice.
Katniss feared having children because she feared for their future--feared a world where theyâd starve to death, feared a world where they could be ripped from her arms and thrown to the slaughter of the Hunger Games. Katniss fears, more than even her own death, losing those she loves--look at how she was devastated by the loss of her father. Of course sheâd be afraid to bring children into a world thatâs designed to kill them. But the struggles of the series wouldnât have much point if Katniss remained trapped in that fear, if her world remained a place hostile to new life. So the end of the series has to show that growth and change.
Of course itâs Peeta who helps her to move beyond her fear. Never forget that for Katniss, Peeta always represents hope. A new chance at life. When she was starving, at her lowest point of despair, he provided, at the cost of pain to himself, the bread that gave her hope. When they were in the Hunger Games, he gave her hope that the world could be transformed into something better by choosing to look beyond their own fears for survival and putting someone elseâs needs above their own. Acting, not out of fear or self-interest, but for the good of the other could--and did--change the world. That changed world is one that welcomes children, and makes it possible, eventually, for Katniss to do so, too.
Giving birth to children doesnât add to Katnissâ trauma. It shows her healing from it. Choosing to hope despite her fear. And what is her reward for it? Joy. Not mere happiness that ignores the pain, but joy that transcends it. Joy that does not erase the fear but makes the fear worthwhile. Joy that heals her enough to face a second pregnancy. And the joy of having two children who donât know what it means to live in fear.
I appreciate that having children doesnât magically erase Katnissâ trauma. Children are not a magical balm that will heal all ills and will bring fulfillment to every womanâs life, and the series isnât arguing that it does. As the passage above shows, she will continue to live with her fears and regrets. But with Peeta and her children around her, she will also live with new life. And love. And always, always, hope.
Exactly
finnick odair not dying at the end of mockingjay and getting to live his life would include...
him being close friends with everlark
attending everlarkâs wedding and joking with katniss about her dress: âi thought you outgrew the pretty little dressesâ (headcanon by @occvsus on twitter)
being concerned about peeta and his mental health and helping him deal with it
getting to meet his son and grow old with him and annie
eventually having another child
inviting everlark and haymitch to district 4 because katnissâs mom works there (and because he would miss them of course)
lowkey looking after katnissâs mom
keeping in touch with johanna and not letting her go through all of her trauma alone
inviting johanna over so sheâs like aunt johanna to his children
finnick pushes johanna to ask cressida out because we all know theyâre lesbians
he loves annie every second of every day, he feels so lucky to have her
he would organize days by the beach with his family, teach his children how to swim and fish
he wouldnât tell them about the games though
heâs a very goofy dad, but loves his children fiercely and would do anything for them and annie
eventually katniss becomes aunt katniss and the boys become uncle haymitch and uncle peeta
katniss and finnick become each otherâs confidants and best friends because they understand each other perfectly
finnick would see how annie and peeta become really close too, one of the reasons why being the shared trauma that they went through in the capitol
finnick reverting to his old, happy self
he tells really bad jokes
katniss and johanna roll their eyes every time that happens
haymitch, peeta and annie laugh
all of them meeting in district 4 more and more often because they have become each otherâs family
finnick and annie visit district 12 a couple of times a year but itâs still destroyed so theyâd rather meet in 4
they have a house in districtâs 12 victorâs village though, and same goes for everlark, haymitch and johanna in district 4 (no one lives there anymore except the victors so)
finnick and katniss would go hunting
annie and peeta bake because theyâre soft
haymitch looks after the children and doesnât drink anymore because heâs finally sober
eventually katniss would open up to finnick about her sister and father and finnick would open up to her about all of the people he lost
literally WHO is gale
surprise surprise, everlark has their first child
and finnickâs son is a teenager now
if odesta had another child theyâd probably be a teenager too
odestaâs children become the older siblings, they take care of everlarkâs child
finnick becomes uncle finnick and annie becomes aunt annie
everlark has their second child
he teaches everlarkâs children how to swim too
he jokes around with them a lot, heâs literally the fun, laidback uncle
he often carries peeta bridal-style because of his leg to amuse everyone
veeeery cocky around all of the children
everlarkâs children admire him but his children just sigh because... why is he like this
they love seeing him happy though, after studying the games at school they know that their parents deserve all of the happiness in the world
finnick has the best relationship with his children
also, he ages like fine wine
cressida and johanna get married
literal best found family, they would have outsold
regular holidays with all of them together as a family? amazing
miss everdeen would attend too
at first it was hard for everyone because they lost so many people they cared about but they moved on little by little
theyâre happy

âWhat I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.â
