i love when people talk about ships like "why do you like that? that's so toxic! they tried to kill/hurt each other" like that's not the whole appeal lmao

Madge should have lived so that she and Gale could have had the best background haters to reluctant acquaintances to besties in denial to lovers relationship.

Then Katniss gets to have two people to talk to about her Peeta problems and when she's like "IDK if I love him 😕" and Madge just smiles cause yes, you do, but imma let you figure it out on your own time. And Gale just rolls his eyes and walks away cause ffs Katniss, you idiot, go get your husband.

And then Katniss, instead of having to deal with Gale's bullshit in MJ, she gets the pleasure of watching her besties fall in love with each other in real time and she's trying - horribly - to give them relationship advice. Also that one part where Gale's like "I think Finnick likes you" it's out of genuine concern and not jealousy and then Madge laughs her ass off cause "no he doesn't Gale, he misses his wife and she misses her husband and they're best friend bonding over shared trauma". After that, Gale's jealous of Finnick - not because he thinks he loves Katniss but because bro, that is MY bestie get your own.

Also, with platonic bestie everthorne, Prim's death is that much more heartbreaking. Now, instead of being someone that Katniss is mildly annoyed with consistently because she doesn't know if she loves him or Peeta, they're best friends. She tells him (and Madge) everything and she loves him (platonic). And then, she goes from having him as a constant to not being able to look him in the eye and being devastated knowing it wasn't really his fault but she can't seperate him from that event. They grow apart, and, by extension, so do her and Madge.

But because I like happy endings, Gale and Madge move to D2 and Gale tills part of their backyard so Madge can grow a garden and there's a whole section for strawberries. They get married and have a few kids and they're happy. And they make regular trips to 12 to visit Gale's family and also Haymitch (who has lowkey had a soft spot for Madge from afar her whole life because of her icon of an aunt).

It takes a few years, but Peeta and Madge meet each other at the bakery one day and spend a couple hours catching up. Peeta tells Katniss, who then (she denies it) comes with Peeta to the bakery "to help" (to maybe catch Madge). Madge comes by and they reunite and Madge speaks on Gale's behalf about how awful he feels, but she tells Katniss that she understands why she can't forgive him. They decide to remain friends.

The Hawthornes visit 12 a few more times before Katniss decides she's ready to see Gale again. They meet up (with their spouses in tow so they don't have to be alone) and he apologizes and she maybe slowly starts to heal a little more. As a little more time passes, she forgives him for something that wasn't technically his fault and they all become best friends again just in time for Gale and Madge to be the first toast baby's honorary aunt and uncle.

They all stay besties till the very end and their kids are besties and Haymitch is Grandpa Haymitch to the Hawthorne and Toast babies and they all live happily ever after the end.

when i first started getting into fandom, soulmate aus were super popular, and there were so many creative ones !! timers, tattoos, seeing in grayscale, red strings, shared pain — you name it.  today, i randomly remembered the one where whenever you lose something, it ends up in your soulmate’s possession. so now i’m thinking about how much fun this concept would be for gadge. 

because gale doesn’t have a lot of possessions nor the money to replace things, and because of that, is likely very careful with what he does have. one thing i’m sure he does lose? arrows. he’s a good shot, but that doesn’t mean he never misses. so madge will wake up, and there’s just an arrow on her bedroom floor. 

this is how she knows her soulmate is gale. it’s not like there were a lot of options to begin with, but perhaps madge covertly tries to return the three she’s acquired in the last couple weeks to katniss, only to be met with confusion (and perhaps a little offense because i don’t miss that often). or maybe she just knows because katniss’s fingertips are sometimes stained from picking up the nubs of charcoal she finds. 

meanwhile, gale is positive his soulmate is a townie, much to his irritation. only made worse when he wakes up to a few loose coins next to his pillow. the thought that anyone could simply not worry enough about money to keep track of it makes him sick with ire. he also finds himself in possession of useless trinkets: harpins and ribbons, a single glove. sometimes, he finds something worth a few coins or a meal at the hob. other times, he brightens posy’s week by tying a pink bow in her hair. 

i also think that soulmates can be platonic. because A there is no superior form of love and B imagine that merilee’s soulmate was her twin. and therefore, madge has seen firsthand what losing yours can do to a person. she and katniss have that in common. another thing besides gale’s…. attitude toward townfolk for them to overcome. 

idk i just think it’s a fun (if not slightly in-your-face) spin on the ‘we come from different worlds’ thing that makes gadge so appealing to me.

CALLING ALL GADGE STANS

Gale Hawthorne woke with a jolt, propping himself up on his elbows as if he’d been dragged out of deep water — head throbbing, chest aching and sweat clinging to his skin as a hellish ringing filled his ears. Bad dreams barely changed anymore. Five years later and they still came wearing the same faces, the same lines of dialogue, the same moments. They weren’t nightmares so much as old memories looping on themselves, insisting on being seen again. He always woke to them the same way, shaking and out of breath. Sedatives had stopped working a long time ago. It didn’t matter, though. Remembering felt like the least he deserved. He feared, in fact, what might happen if he ever managed to forget. And so the nights became something like a trial, one he never defended himself in, just waited for the verdict he already knew by heart. He was quite used to it by now. There was no other way to live. But morning didn’t make things any easier. Waking almost always was the worst part. It had been years since getting out of bed felt like an actual decision instead of simple muscle memory. Some nights he lay there staring into the dark and entertained scenarios where he wouldn’t have to face another day at all. Some nights the thought went further than hope. The only reason it ever stopped was because the faces of his siblings always cut through the fog before anything could really settle. Maybe things would’ve turned out differently if not for them. Maybe not. There was no way to know, it made no difference. He didn’t care either.

Pretty Dress is out now. I can’t believe Gadge nation is already finding its way into this story, my heart is so full of love. <3

If Gale and Madge set their differences aside and Madge survived the bombing D12. They started off as haters to friends to lovers, then I'll be one hell of a happy duck.

The Haymitch and Gale Post Nobody Asked For

Haymitch and Katniss share plenty of similarities, but I can't stop thinking about how Haymitch's circumstances/young Haymitch's personality reminds me more of Gale than Katniss.

Just like Katniss and Haymitch, Gale also belongs to a very poor family and he lost his father in the mines. He has younger sibling(s) that he loves dearly, and he hunts to sustain his family.

Like Haymitch, Gale's mom does laundry and is generally a more present mother than Mrs Everdeen. Being from the poorest part of the district, both Gale and Haymitch (understandably) have some underlying resentment towards the richer people from town, especially the two rich blonde girls who own a ridiculously expensive gold pin (in the sypnosis, Haymitch describes Maysilee as "the most stuck up girl from town"). I am so, so interested to see how Haymitch's perception of Maysilee changes, since we already know that they end up allying in the games.

Gale’s perception of Madge would also have obviously changed when/if he found out that she had run all the way to the Victor's village in the middle of a snowstorm to bring extremely expensive Capitol morphling that managed to ultimately save Gale's life by providing him relief from the pain. Not to mention that Gale was technically a lawbreaker in the eyes of the new Peacekeepers and if they ever found out that she had helped a "criminal", Madge could be severely punished, the fact that she was the Mayor's daughter not really mattering anymore.

Katniss did not have any such prejudices about town/seam, at least not to the extent Gale did. Her best friend is the richest person in D12.

Somehow, Haymitch's persona (at least in the interviews that Katniss saw in CF) reminds me more Gale than Katniss. Katniss is a very quiet, reserved kind of girl, while Gale and Haymitch seem somewhat cockier.

I think that as Haymitch gets older, he becomes much more like Katniss, in the sense that he is more disillusioned and less angry at the world in general. He is also more compassionate. He only voted for the 76th games to lure Coin into a false sense of security because he just KNEW that our girl Katniss had something up her sleeve. He knows her that well.

I wonder if Haymitch ever saw himself in Gale just like he saw himself in Katniss?
