You never liked summer, the hot sun piercing through you was absolutely unbearable, so when fall came around and the weather started cooling down, you could finally walk outside in peace. You worked as a librarian at the city’s local library, you picked up this job a little over a year ago so you can pay off your student loans. It wasn’t a bad job, definitely not the worst, you actually loved it. Being a librarian meant you had to to help all kinds of people, so to you it seemed calm and enjoyable.
It was another sunny Tuesday and you were scanning a stack of books for this middle aged woman, she looked like an exhausted mother who was picking up a couple books for her kids to read -based on all of the books being from the children section- and as you finished scanning the last one, she spoke up. “You’re very endearing.” Safe to say, it caught you off guard. “O-oh thank you, you’re glowing.” You returned the compliment. A smile grew on her face. “You know, you remind me of my younger self. I was just like you, full of life.” She continued. Her statement made you stop in your tracks, you looked up with your lips slightly parted. “What do mean, miss?” You asked, your question being laced with confusion. “I mean look at you, so young and precious. You have your whole life ahead of you, kid. So live it to the fullest.” She answered as she gave you a calm but a ‘cry for help’ type of look before packing her books and making her way to the exit.
You were shocked, absolutely flabbergasted. You had never had a conversation like this. Your whole life you’ve heard the saying ‘live life to the fullest’ and that’s what you tried to do. You never got yourself into any trouble, never had long time friends, never took any risks. You.just.lived. Even after finding out you were incapable of having kids, you still went on with your life like nothing happened, you convinced yourself that it wasn’t a big deal and that you were okay.
“Good evening, ma’am. How are you doing today?” The doctor sitting across from you greeted you. “Good evening to you too, doctor. I’m doing way better now that you put me on that medication, it feels like such a relief, thank you.” You had gone to the hospital due to a terrible stomach ache that came so suddenly, you thought that it was just a simple stomach bug, but unfortunately you were so wrong. “I’m glad to here that, so we did a test and it turns out that the cause of your pain wasn’t a just a virus or food poisoning, but it’s something much worse. You’re infertile, I am deeply sorry.” As soon as you’d heard those words come out of the doctors mouth your head went quiet, it was like you body had shut off. Your ears began ringing and your chest got tighter, but you kept a smile on your face. You couldn’t cry, your brain never let you.
As you were walking through the hallways of the hospital, you saw a mother and her baby boy playing together in the lobby. They looked so happy, you couldn’t help but stare at them for awhile. The mom looked at her baby with awe, her eyes sparkled with love for her kid. You had never been so devastated. Throughout you life your only wish was to have kids, to have someone to love and that loves you just as much. And there you were, standing in the middle of a hallway looking at what your life could’ve been.
Maybe you had misunderstood the saying? It was way too early in the morning for a conversation like this. The day continued with you being nonverbal, having no energy to care anymore. You tidied the place up with tired eyes and a tired brain. You ended you day by shutting the door with a sigh. You often had good days because you made them good with your bright smile and personality, just today wasn’t your day.
On the other end,he was absolutely soaked with blood and his body was consumed by bruises. “Yeah! Get him! Fucking get his ass!” A fan shouted as Hyunjin was on top of his opponent, pinning him down with one hand and repeatedly punching the others already swollen face with the other. “Holy shit! He’s going to kill him!” Another yelled in fear.
The air was thick, full of tension and rivalry, that was what radiated off of Hyunjin once he got into the ring. He was a monster, a sweaty one. The crowd was roaring with excitement and anticipation on who would win and without any doubt it would be Hyunjin. He had absolutely no mercy, promising himself that he would win because that was what he was used to.
Hyunjin had been in the fighting industry for awhile now. He had been training ever since he was a pre-teen, still too young to understand anything that was going on around him.
“Hyunjin go take out the trash!” His mother yelled from the kitchen as she was finishing up the dishes. “Okay!” He yelled back as he passed by his drunk father that was knocked out cold on the couch. The TV was playing a boxing match between Mike Tyson and another unlucky opponent. Hyunjin had always admired this type of entertainment, other people would get squeamish or would cringe at the site of two adults bruising up one another.
Unfortunately for him, his home life was never the best, his mom worked two jobs and was always exhausted, never having time for him. His father was an alcoholic, always coming home late past midnight and was always yelling at the little boy, causing Hyunjin to despise his father. Fortunately enough for his mother and him, his dad never hit either of them, it was only ever screaming matches going on between his parents.
He made his was out the house with the bag full of trash in one of his hands, heading to the trash bin that was in a dark alleyway, a very scary one. His neighborhood was known to be one of the worst ones out there, it was filled with young criminals and there were daily police sirens.
Once he got closer to the bin, a boy just his age attacked him, cornering him with a knife to his throat. “Give me all you got!” The male screamed in Hyunjins face. This action was so sudden it made him immediately drop the black bag and his chest stared heaving, full of fear he tried pushing off the boy, but it was no help. “I-i’ve got nothing, I swear.” Hyunjin clarified, but the boy only got closer, and that’s when Hyunjin snapped. He doesn’t know what had gotten to him but all his body wanted to to was to defend itself -of course- and with that Hyunjins fist collided with the others face, causing him to stumble back in pain, Hyunjin ran for his life as the boy was distracted with holding his bloody nose.
Ever since that night, Hyunjin has been training, determined to be the best. There was something about the rush of adrenaline that he got when he punched that boys face, that’s what made him so good.
It was 4:30 PM and you were doing work on you computer. The area was filled with the usual customers you'd see almost everyday. There were all kinds of people here, old people, businessmen, tired mothers, confused teenagers, imaginative children. The conclusion was that everybody loved a good book. But what weirded you out a little was that you had only rarely seen people your age or close to it come here, you never understood it.
You were sending your usual email to a company that wanted nothing to do with your library, requesting for them to send over a new genre of books so you could open up a new section. “I’d like to rent this.” A deep voice spoke from above you. Your typing stopped as you looked up at the source of that voice and the smell of cigarettes and strong cologne hit you. “Of course, for how long?” You replied with your usual smile as a part of customer service. “A week.” He replied. As you finished scanning the book you couldn’t help but notice all the bruises and cuts on his crossed arms. He was wearing a white tank top, exposing his muscular arms that had tattoos all over them. You caught yourself staring for a little too long and so did he. “You like what you see?” He said with a smirk on his face. You looked up at his face to see more tattoos, one being right above his eyebrow. He was very handsome and pretty, but you could tell that he was no good. “I-I’m so sorry, excuse me.” You said nervously as you looked away, your face turning a pinkish color. But he kept looking, his bottom lip was caught between his teeth as he eyes you up and down.
Once you were done, you bagged up the novel and handed it to him, you hand brushing against his for a second. “Thanks, pretty.” He said before winking at you and walking away. You couldn’t help but feel this piercing feeling in you chest, it was like he knew he had an effect on you.
Although you tried to brush it off and not think about it as much as you could, that short lived interaction was stuck in your mind. You’ve only ever been in two relationships your whole life, both of them being in high school. They weren’t anything serious, but more like flings. Guys hit on you quite often, but you couldn’t even tell what his intention was. It was like he lived just to tease to whoever he spoke to. Maybe you were overthinking the whole thing?
It was a week later and there he was, sitting on one of the lounge chairs with a book in his hand. He had come in to return the book that he rented out the week before and instead of leaving he searched for another one and got comfortable. You were never the nosy type, but for some reason you couldn’t take your eyes off of him. It was like he had this aura that had a rope attached to your eyes, making you eyes stuck on him.
It was nearing closing time and there was no one in the place, except for mr.sexy himself. You knew that as long as there was a person in here, you had to stay too. You were tired, looking forward to going home and plopping onto your bed, but he wasn’t making that possible…so you had to take matters into your own hands. “Hey sir, it’s been five minutes past closing time and you should really get going..if that’s possible.” You said, nervous as to what his response would be. “Oh really? I thought that this library had a policy that a customer can stay as long as they want, even if the place closed.” He said with a smug look on face. “Well sure but-“ you were cut off by his cocky self. “But what? Why do want me gone so badly?” He said as he put his book down on one of the little tables beside him. “I-it’s not that! But I’m getting really tired and I’m going to miss my bedtime.” You confessed embarrassingly. You have a bedtime? At your grown age?” Hyunjin chuckled, finding you cute. You looked down and played with the hem of your sweater. “Bedtime huh?” He said as he looked outside through one of the big windows, it was nighttime and there was no way he’d let someone so fragile like you go home alone. “How do you get home?” He asked as an idea popped up in his mind. “I walk home.” You replied. “Let me walk you home, what kind of man would I be if I let a cutie like you walk home at such a late time?” Hyunjin suggested as he stood up, towering over your small figure. You grew suspicious off what his motive was, afraid he’d kill you like all other immature men would do. “Well, you are a stranger and I’m not risking getting murdered tonight, I don’t even know your name. Thanks though.” You declined. “Fair enough, I’m Hyunjin.” He chuckled at your paranoia. “I’m Y/N.” You introduced yourself. “Pretty girl with a pretty name, how ‘bout you let me take you out some time…you know so we can get to know each other and you don’t have to be so terrified of me.” He said, his hands now in his pockets. “I’ll think about it.” You said, not being able to hide your smile.
It’s been a week since that second conversation with him, you couldn’t get him out of your mind. The way he spoke, walked, licked his lips before flipping another page, the way he sat, his body so lean but buff you were genuinely confused but impressed on how someone could get that type build. Every part of him was consuming your thoughts. You went on with your day as usual, still wondering when he’ll come and take you out. Maybe he was a player and liar like all other men are, pathetic of you to even think that he’d be slightly interested in you. It was clear that all he wanted was to get into your pants.
You sighed as you zoned out into nothing, when a familiar voice pulled you out of your trance. “Hey there, pretty girl.” You looked up to see Hyunjin, his hands all bruised up. “H-hey, long time no see.” Your attempt at flirting were only seen as cute. “I know and I’m sorry ‘bout it, let me make it up to you and take you out on a walk and then we can decide what to do.” He was oozing with cockiness, his confidence not letting him be scared of rejection. “What time do you get off?” He continued. “Uhm well it’s a Thursday so… 5:30 PM.” You said as you looked to the side, trying to remember when you were done with work. “Good, be ready in 3 hours for me.” He said. “Sure thing.” You replied. “Well, looks like I gotta get going. I’m a little busy, see you later buttercup.” Hyunjin said as he winked before he got out. “Bye!” You hurried to say, hoping he’d hear.
Pretty girl..cutie..buttercup…what’s up with these pet names?
