âDonât mention the alpha pack to me. I donât care anymore.â
There was little she could say to Jennifer than sheâd not already said, unless it was fuelled by the hurt and anger which resided in her gut and the other female really wouldnât want her to unleash any of that. Cora had been restraining it for a very long time and Jennifer had just been witness to only a very small part of it.
âDo not tell me what my problem is! You know nothing about meâyou only thought you did. You lost the right to lecture on whatâs wrong with me once you turned into a deceitful bitch.â
The youngest Hale had to clench her jaw tightly closed, her own way of keeping control, but the flex in her jawline gave it away if observed close enough.    Â
Cora and Derek hadnât really spoken much about Jenniferâs arrival, only the fact that she had turned up. Maybe it was because her brother knew she wasnât happy about it at all. Though when Cora had found out where Jennifer was staying, sheâd carefully neglected to mention that she would be going to see her. Of course, she knew her brother would warn her against doing so, hence why she didnât tell him.Â
âI have thought alotâŚyou have had far too much of my thoughtsâso quit thinking you can read me.â
It had taken so long to forget about Jenniferâin truth, the wolf could never forget about herâespecially what she had done to Derekâto her too. Yet things had been a little better recently and now it just seemed to have turned her thoughts upside down once more.Â
âIt might be rubbing salt in a wound by talking about itâŚ.but salt heals thingsâŚand thereâs a wound there that may never healâŚbut he deserves that chanceâŚfor you to explain and so much more.â
She inhaled deeply and shook her head slowly, knowing her brother might not be over the moon with the fact she had punched Jennifer, but at this moment in time, she couldnât give a damn. Â
âI remember that time yesâŚbut my guard was down and I trusted you!ââin other words, Cora didnât mind her knowing she lied about boots. She was determined not to show her she was lying now though. Perhaps she wasnât doing such a good job of it like she first thought.
âwhich really did mean it was time to go.Â
âYou should never have left it this longâŚ.not if you truly were sorryâŚâ
The expression she shot her was angry and that was a good mask to use because what was hidden underneath, was far more vulnerable and Cora never wanted her to see that.
âJust stay away from me. Iâll do the same with you.â
Slowly she backed her way towards the door, not even trusting Jennifer enough to turn her back on her.
A far cry from how things used to beâŚ
âŚand that was the saddest part of it all.Â
âMaybe not. But you donât everything you think you do.â
Not in regards to her actions, no, those were all theyâd been. Sheâd stolen lives to fuel her power and rip apart that unnatural pack of alphas built on the bloodshed of those they were supposed to protect. But there was more, more even Derek didnât know completely. It wasnât like they had time to talk after all had come to light.
âYes I do.â she sighed, âYouâre doing it again. You donât want me to know you, and odds are I donât like I once did; things have changed.â Between her and Kate Argent, though she didnât mention that name.
âBut I did know you.â And Cora had known her, as least as sheâd have liked to have been known; her time with the Hales was still the happiest sheâd ever been, regardless of the disastrous way it had ended.
She raised a brow, despite the pain the movement caused her so recently punched face, and looked at Cora for a moment. Being able to read her wasnât difficult because the wolf was emotionally led. Cora couldnât change that about herself; it was who she was. And Jennifer wasnât about to tell Derek that Cora had come to her; that would only create tension between the two wolves that wasnât needed.
âIf that makes you feel better.â It wouldnât frankly Jennifer could probably resurrect all of Coraâs family and she wouldnât be happy with her; betrayal ran too deep.
It couldnât be changed. And Jennifer didnât want to change it. The past was the past. It was all she had to try and build a future from; one different from what had happened... Sheâd been doing it too until Derek had gotten in touch, may as well throw all that progress out of the window.
âSalt heals wounds, youâre right.â she nodded, âSo weâll talk. But Iâm afraid you donât get to dictate when that happens.â That was for Derek to do.
âDoes that matter?â she asked, frowning slightly, âYouâre doing the same things now that tell me what youâre thinking,â If anything it was even easier given how emotional she was; as if the opening punch didnât give any of that away.
âI was sorry, not suicidal.â she replied with a shrug, âWhat do you think the Hale pack wouldâve done the moment they realised I was back in New Orleans? Would they have heard me out, or struck first?â he gently tapped where sheâd been hit as if to prove her point.
âThat wonât be possible, but Iâll try.â she was here to do a job for Derek and sheâd do all that was needed to see that done, even if it meant needing to be around Cora far more than she wished. Once upon a time the other wouldâve jumped at that chance.
But she wouldnât change a thing. She was sorry it happened but couldnât regret it. Â
