If I Never Saw the Sun on Tapas!
I am so very excited to announce that I am publishing my novel If I Never Saw the Sun on Tapas! Please subscribe now so you don’t miss out.
It’s 1980 in Milton, a British industrial town where it rarely stops raining, and the only dream that Isambard Fox—twenty-one, slender, head-full-of-books, and unapologetically ginger—has ever had is to be a rock star. In his dimly lit bedroom, Bard practices for a bright future that hardly seems possible to reach from the dreary present. His bullying father is pushing him into becoming yet another cog in the city’s industrial machine when Bard’s younger sister Cassandra—sixteen, bold, bratty, and beloved—introduces Bard to an American guitarist named Kai Harper. Kai is unlike anyone Bard has ever known—nineteen, mixed-race (what Hawaiians like him call “hapa”), disarmingly open, and powerful in a way that even he himself doesn’t fully understand. Bard distrusts the uncanny influence that Kai seems to hold over people and resists the feelings that Kai inspires in him. But when his father’s control boils over into cruelty and puts Cassandra in danger, Bard realizes he must enlist Kai’s help. In doing so, Bard must also confront his own fear of the vulnerability inherent in revealing his true self—and his dream—to the world. A story of love, pain, and music played out in dingy clubs, suburban bedrooms, and wet city streets, If I Never Saw the Sun features a culture-clash romance and the kind of songs that save your life. Goths, episode one! The first of many! Well, three. Or four, possibly. With a cast of characters yet to be introduced.

Portrait of Kalmyk Girl Annushka
Russia (1767)
Annushka, a Kalmyk girl of Western Mongolian ancestry, was a serf and pupil of Countess Varvara Sheremeteva, daughter of Count Sheremetev. Argunov himself was a serf of Count Sheremetev (1713-1788). Annushka is holding a portrait of the late Countess.

Worldwide Story Structures
Because there are more continents on the planet than Europe. And sometimes we need to escape from such imperialism. Disclaimer: There are missing types from this list. I haven’t found all of them. If you wish to share some you know, I will give you credit. These are just a handful I’ve stumbled across by reading and consuming as widely as possible. I’d love to collect them all.

I’m very excited to announce that Kaitlyn Katsoupis of Bel Castro Agency is representing The Queen of Smokey Mountain by myself and Jamie Parreno! The middle grade graphic novel is a Filipino Cinderella story about Renata, a girl with the amazing -- and secret -- power to communicate with bugs. Plucked out of poverty into the heady world of Filipino beauty pageants, Renata must find her place in a new world with new friends while remaining true to where she came from. The plight of the poor haunts her... and her power just keeps getting stronger.
Morrissey is a problem. I know it. But I love his songs, I love who he was. And hearing his voice in person matters to me. Maybe someday I’ll have had enough and not be able to separate him from his art, not be able to see him backlit on a stage singing “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” and pretend he’s not what he is now. I don’t know. I feel guilty and unapologetic at the same time, if that’s even possible. He was in extremely good voice Friday night; the band was tight — Gustavo’s piano solo before “Every Day is Like Sunday” was majestic! NASA has released new images of Jupiter, taken by the Juno Spacecraft.
It must hit me how staggeringly terrifying Jupiter is. Each of those swirly things is more massive than I can comprehend, and there are more of them than I can count. Look at how dark and black some of the… Depths? Are. Imagine being in one of those. The Sun is barely any bigger or brighter than any other star in the sky, and you’re falling into a black, bottomless void that’s deeper than the entire Earth.
Jupiter is a Van Gogh painting.
