Happy 30th Anniversary Xena: Warrior Princess!
Alex and Kara looked at each other. Kara stood before her desk in full Supergirl regalia, cape feeling heavy on her back.
âThere has to be an explanation for this,â said Alex.
Kara couldnât accept that. If Lena had gone no-contact for a time, that would be reasonable. Sheâd sometimes hole up in her lab for days at a time, barely sleeping or eating, consumed by an idea- but she would warn Kara first. She definitely wouldnât no-show a brunch da⊠a brunch friend meetup between friends at their favorite patisserie and then go totally off radar for three days.
âShe didnât show up to our brunch,â Kara said. âWe have to find her. I need to know sheâs okay, Alex.â
Her sister sat back in her chair and looked back at her over her desk.
âHave you looked? You can cover more ground and do it faster than we ever could.â
âOf course Iâve *looked*,â said Kara. âThatâs why Iâm so worried. I flew past her apartment and things werenât right. There was a mug of tea left out on the counter. The place was messy. Lena doesnât do messy.â
âBut no signs of a struggle,â said Alex.
âI called Jess and she said Lena left her a message saying she needed a few days away and sheâd be back by Friday.â
âSo,â said Alex, âsounds like you should wait until Friday.â
âShe missed our date, Alex.â
There was a heavy, uncomfortable pause. Alex went very still, examining Kara with calculating eyes. She picked up a pen and toyed with it in both hands, frowning.
âMaybe she just needs space?â
âWhy would she need space. Iâm her best friend. We were having Sunday brunch. We have Sunday brunch every Sunday.â
Alex rocked slightly in her desk chair.
âOkay. Iâll order Brainy to start a search and weâll see if we can pin her down, but Kara⊠sheâs your friend. Sometimes friends need space. Something may have come up.â
Kara crossed her arms. âThen why wouldnât she tell me? She wouldnât just ghost me, Alex. Iâm telling you she wouldnât.â
âOkay,â Alex began, âalright, like I said, weâll start a search.â
She said something else, but Alexâs voice was drowned out by another.
Lex.
âHello, Kara. Donât move, donât react. Iâve hacked the DEO systems and Iâm broadcasting on a frequency your charming sister canât hear, only you. Youâre going to follow my instructions. Say okay, or there will be consequences.â
âOkay, Alex,â said Kara, âIâll go home and try to relax.â
Kara had to use every ounce of her Kryptonian control over her muscles and breathing to appear calm.
âIâll let you know if we wind anything.â
Kara nodded and turned to leave.
âGo to your locker, and change. Youâll find one of my agents has left a note with an address. Go there, and do not change back into that cheerful little costume of yours. This one is for Kara Danvers.
Thinking along the way, Kara walked silently to the locker room. Once she was inside, and free of cameras, she hurriedly texted Alex, urging her not to react or do anything obvious but that the system had been compromised and there was at least one Cadmus goon in the building.
Then, she changed. The note was in the pocket of her shirt.
Grinding her teeth, Kara left the DEO as a human did, on foot, and traversed National City as a human did, slowly. It didnât take long for her to spot the drones; she was being watched.
The address wasnât far, a small commercial building about ten blocks from the DEO, a nondescript brick block with roll-up garage doors not unlike a dozen others on the same street. Kara walked around to the side of the building where a glass door buzzed and unlocked.
Kara opened it and stepped inside. Immediately inside the entrance was just an empty vestibule with an occupied receptionistsâs counter and an old chair. A sticky note hung on the wall with an arrow.
Following it, Kara found a solid door that was lined on the inside with lead, as were the walls, of course. She turned the knob, super-hearing amplifying the turning of its oiled core, and stepped through.
On the other side was a large pod hooked up to a variety of tubes and cables. As she walked in, Kara passed a bank of monitors lining the wall with the door. A Bluetooth speaker sat on a folding table. Lexâs voice carried from it.
âHello, Kara.â
âWhat is this?â
âI know youâve been frantically looking for my sister. Sheâs been here the entire time. Look- but donât touch. You wonât like the consequences.â
As he spoke, the outer shell of the pod rotated open, revealing a tank of amber liquid. Lena floated inside, an oxygen mask on her face and sensors stuck to her body. She was dressed in a black bodysuit, and looked changed somehow. Kara wasnât sure how, she couldnât quite put her finger on it.
âSleeping beauty herself.â
âWhat have you done to her?â
âWell,â said Lex, âitâs quite a long story and youâre a bit too dull to grasp the complexity so Iâll sum up: a little bit of Harun-El here, a bit of your DNA that my mother stole there, and a tiny sprinkle of a special bespoke Kryptonite with a very short half life⊠the short answer is that Iâve given my sister superpowers.â
Kara blinked.
âYou⊠what? Why?â
Lex laughed, tinny and distant. âItâs simple really. Itâs all about the final, secret ingredient, another type of Kryptonite radiation courtesy of my⊠whatâs the word Iâm looking for⊠my inferior imitator, Max Lord. You may remember it.â
âLex,â Kara said. âWhat did you do?â
âLet me show you.â
The podâs inner transparent walls opened and dumped Lena on the floor. She landed on her knees, gasping as she yanked the mask away from her mouth and stood up.
âKara?â she said. âWhere are we? How did we get here? I was about to leave for⊠I feel strange.â
Lena looked at her with wide wild eyes and Kara edged closer, her heart pounding harder with every step. Her dark hair was slicked back over her neck from the fluid in the tank and she looked pale, but her cheeks were just a touch fuller.
Then it hit Kara, why Lena had looked different. She looked to have put on fifteen pounds at least of muscle, adding a blocky quality to her shoulders, thickening her legs and biceps. She didnât seem to notice.
âLena dear,â said the tinny speaker, âsister mine. I must tell you something.â
Lena winced. âWhy is he so loud? Wait, Lex? What is this? What did you do?â
Kara froze, a cold ball forming in her stomach. Oh great Rao.
She could see it. A faint hint of a red sparkle in the whites of Lenaâs eyes.
Courtesy of Max Lord.
âLena,â said Kara. âListen, okay? Try to stay calm. Iâll get you som help.â
âNo, listen to me,â Lex said. âI have a little secret to tell you.â
Lenaâs gaze snapped around to the speaker. Behind Kara, the monitors turned on, and Lenaâs eyes went wide. Kara paused for a moment and then turned, dread coiling like a serpent in her guts.
One monitor showed her catching a bullet. Another, yanking open her shirt to reveal the crest. Another⊠another⊠another. There was even one with a feed of her changing out of her suit in the DEO locker room.
âKara Danvers,â Lex intoned, âis Supergirl. She lied to you. Sheâs been lying to you. Sheâs always lied to you. Itâs just as I said- the alien has been using you since the start.â
âLena,â said Kara. âHeâs lying.â
Lena looked at her sharply, eyes narrowing. âAbout you being Supergirl?â
âNo, I am,â Kara admitted, âbut I would never use you. I have my reasons why I didnât tell you and I promise Iâll tell you everything, but first you need help. Lex has poisoned you. You will get very sick if we donât take you back to the DEO.â
âSo she can take your powers!â Lex said. âThe powers I gave you. I didnât poison you, I made you a god. Weâre going be gods together, Lena. Once we rid the world of these alien freaks weâll show the world a better tomorrow.â
âLex,â said Lena, âshut the fuck up.â
âShe lied, she lied!â the speaker cackled.
Lena looked at it. âWhere are you?â
âIâll tell you as soon as youâve dealt with the Kryptonian.â
Lena smiled, but there was no warmth in it. Only a baring of teeth.
âI see. I need a moment in private with Kara.â
Lena glanced at the speaker and it exploded in a shower of sparks and melted plastic, leaving scorch marks on the table.
Oh Rao. It took Kara years to use her heat vision. Lena had tapped into it in what, a minute?
âLena,â Kara said, as softly as she dared. âI need you to listen to me.â
âNo, youâre going to listen.â
Lena blurred. The impact shook Kara to the bones, rattled her teeth in the sockets. Before she knew what happened, she was against the wall, wrists held firmly in Lenaâs hands, pinned above her head. Lena leaned in close, languidly pressing her entire body against Karaâs.
âDo you remember,â Lena husked, âthat day in my office when you were being a little brat about doing your job and I called you to the carpet for it?â
Kara blinked.
âYes,â she said, quietly. âI donât think brat is the word Iâd chose.â
âI would,â Lena said, her voice low and sultry, as she looked at Kara through her lashes. âThatâs exactly what you were until I put you in your place, and then you were ready to be a good girl for me.â
Karaâs brain short circuited. It took her a half minute to stammer a few nonsense syllables as a jolt shot up her spine from low in her hips to the crown of her head, like sheâd been plunged into frigid water.
Kara stared back at her, feeling a strange squirming pressure that she quickly realized was Lena pushing her thighs apart with one of her own, pressing her knee between them to drive her thigh muscle into Kara, against the apex of her legs.
âInteresting,â Lena whispered, her blow eyes scanning Karaâs features. âThe flush is obvious⊠but the heat bloom on your skin and the pupil dilation.â
Kara gasped.
âSee,â Lena whispered into Karaâs lips. âGood girl.â
Kara honest to God whimpered.
âMy brother. Silly boy, probably thought I was going to go into a rage and kill you because you lied to me for so long.â
Kara nodded. âYeah that was probably his plan.â
âHeâs such a silly goose,â said Lena. âIâm sure heâll be surprised when I rip his head off his neck.â
âLena!â
âOh come on, you know you want to. You must have thought about it. It would be so easy to just⊠finish it.â
âI have,â Kara admitted, âbut it wouldnât be right. I canât just murder a man in cold blood.â
Lenaâs body undulated against her.
âPlease stop.â
âWhy?â
âHe exposed you to Red Kryptonite. Youâre not thinking straight. Iâd be taking advantage of you.â
âIt seems Iâm the one whoâs pinned you, miss Danvers. I donât think youâre taking advantage.â
âLena,â Kara said, âI want to talk, okay? I want to talk about all of this and⊠and take things slow. Your brother is probably watching this.â
âLet him,â said Lena. âIâll be the icing on the cake. You know all this sturm and drang of his is just Lex throwing a tantrum because Clark wouldnât fuck him.â
âLena!â
âIâve seen the way you look at me, Kara. The way you look at my tits. We both know you want this.â
âOkay maybe I was looking,â Kara admitted, breathing harder. âYouâre v-very⊠very pretty and Iâve been feeling things for you for a long time and⊠and Lena please I donât want to do this like this.â
Lena drew back.
âYouâre terrified.â
Kara nodded, biting her lip. Slowly, Lena released her grip on Karaâs wrists and stepped back.
âPlease come with me to the DEO. It hasnât been long but the longer you go without treatment the worse youâll get. Pretty soon it wonât matter if I say no.â
Lena recoiled, horrified. âI would⊠I would never.â
âWhen I was poisoned like this, I threw Cat Grant off a building.â
âApparently, it didnât work. Iâm sure she had it coming.â
âI almost killed Alex.â
Lena frowned. âOh.â
Kara extended a hand. âCome with me, okay?â
Lena hesitated, then closed a firm grip around Karaâs outstretched palm and let Kara lead her back to the door. Kara took a sharp breath and guided Lena outside.
As soon as they hit the open air, Lena clapped her hands over her ears and screamed.
âKara! Kara, whatâs happening, what is this?â
âItâs your super-senses. Just try to focus on one sound. Here.â
Kara pulled her into an embrace, guiding her ear to Karaâs chest as Eliza once did for her. Gritting her teeth, Lena locked her arms around Kara and breathed hard, squeezing Karaâs ribs.
âCome on, Iâve got you.â
Finally, Alex showed up with five vans full of DEO agents. Kara focused on guiding Lena into the back of one of the vans.
âWas he here?â said Alex.
âClear the building and all that but get us back to the DEO now,â Kara demanded. âTell Brainy to get the Red K protocol ready.â
âWhat? Oh God, Kara, have you been exposed?â
âNo, Lena has.â
Alex blinked.
âWait, what?â
âJust get us back!â
Alex turned and made a motion at the driver and the van backed into a j-turn. Lena was still clinging to her.
âKara, itâs too much, it hurts.â
âItâs okay,â she whispered. âWeâll get you some noise canceling headphones when we get back. Just listen to my heart, okay?â
Lena nodded against her chest.
When they finally arrived, Kara gently picked Lena up and carried her inside and directly to the med bay, laying her on a the sunbed, while Brainy helped Alex set up the Red Kryptonite scrubber protocol.
Lena relaxed into the bed as Kara placed the headphones on her.
âKara,â said Alex. âA word.â
Kara followed her outside, then immediately dumped everything on her.
Alex blinked a few times.
âFuck,â she muttered.
âYeah,â said Kara.
âYou didnât have to be that detailed, Kara. I could have gone without you describing Lena doing the knee thing to my little sister.â
âThe what?â
Alex rubbed the bridge of her nose. âOkay, okay. Sheâs going to be okay. Except she has superpowers now. She still needs a complete physical, just to make sure he didnât do anything else, no surprises.â
âRight.â
âI canât believe that was his whole plan. Make Lena a super and expose her to Red Kryptonite?â
âIf he could give her powers, he could give himself powers, or someone else. This is serious, Alex.â
âI know, but seriously, what did he think was going to happen? Sheâd lose her mind and attack you?â
âI think that was the idea, yes.â
âOkay. Okay. Okay. This is a lot. One step at a time. Weâll need to find him. Let your girl sleep off the treatments and weâll talk to her, see what she knows that might help us.â
âMy girl?â said Kara.
Alex rolled her eyes.
Kara was on the balcony when Lena joined her, having changed into a borrowed set of DEO fatigues. She nervously walked out into the night air and leaned next to Kara.
âHave you adjusted to the noise?â
âYes, but IâŠâ she trailed off.
Lena stood up and her gaze fell upwards. She stared at the sky, dumbfounded.
âThereâs⊠thereâs an aurora. Thereâs an aurora and⊠colors. My God, is this how you see it?â
âYeah,â Kara said softly, too busy staring at Lena.
Finally, Lena looked at her.
âAbout earlier. Iâm sorry. I pushed boundaries and⊠thinking about it scared me. I would never hurt you, Kara.â
âI know,â said Kara. âI know that, but I also know what itâs like to be exposed to that stuff, to have all your worst thoughts come to the surface. To not feel control of yourself. I forgive you.â
Lena nodded, wringing her hands.
âAbout what I said, though.â
âAbout what you said.â
Kara turned and lunged, pulling Lena to her, lifting her slightly off her feet. Lenaâs eyes went wide.
âIs this okay?â
Lena blinked a few times and nodded.
Kara kissed her.
She kissed her freely, without worrying about injuring her. She held her the same way, pressing firmly. Lenaâs hands curled around her arms with stunning strength and Kara felt her belly do a backflip as Lena actually pushed her back a step and into the balcony railing.
Kara didnât have to worry about hurting her. She didnât have to hold back. Lena apparently had never even considered holding back, because she was apparently going for the Knee Thing again. Kara thought she heard the sound of something cracking, but that made no sense.
âKara!â Alex barked.
Kara broke from the kiss, looking over Lenaâs shoulder to find Alex glaring at her.
âKara,â said Alex, âIâm glad you two dipshits finally realized that youâre dating, but please do not destroy the building.â
Kara furrowed her brows, then looked down to realize that her butt had cratered the retraining wall behind her.
âOh,â said Kara. âRight.â
âWe need to talk about next steps. Lena, I need to know what you know about-â
âLex is, or was, at an old LuthorCorp satellite lab in Central City. I recognized the background sounds while he was talking.â
âOh. Okay. We should-â
âLater,â said Lena.
Alex put her fists on her hips. âI donât work for you, Luthor.â
âTrue, but your sister does,â said Lena. âDonât you, darling?â
âUm, yes,â Kara said softly.
âI hate my life,â Alex muttered, as she stormed back inside.
Lena turned her full attention back to Kara, tilting her chin down to look at her through her eyelashes and smirk.
âNow, letâs pick up where we left off.â

CHAPPELL ROAN âą 67th Annual Grammy Awards (February 2, 2025)
âWake up,â Lex snarled.
Karaâs eyelids were brutally heavy. She couldnât force them open no matter how she tried, and everything sounded distant, as if she were listening from underwater. The loudest sound was the blood rushing in her own ears and the steady march of her pulse, like the distant rush of some animal moving across leaves.
âWhu?â she managed to choke out.
âOpen. Your. Eyes.â
Kara finally managed to split them open, blinking away gummy eyelashes to take a blurred look around the room. She wasnât sure where she was, only that they were underground. Her limbs felt leaden and her body ached. It was soon clear why.
The chunk of kryptonite in front of her glowed a paler green than normal. It was different somehow, hard to look at.
âWhat? What did you do?â
âI broadened my mind,â said Lex.
Kara managed to raise her head and look at him. He was stripped to the waist, a flabby early middle aged business executive, much softer than he would allow anyone to realize. He looked a little absurd, especially after all the effort he put into a public image of a physically fit, debonair, imposing man.â
âWhat is this?â
âThat is a very special type of kryptonite. You wouldnât believe what I had to give up to get it. Itâll be worth it in the end.â
âWhere are we?â
âOh this place,â Lex said, glancing around the stone walls, lit by flicker torches and glowing Edison lamps. âA castle, in Scotland. It was incredibly expensive, I assure you. The grounds are quite lovely, though youâll never have a chance to see them.â
âOf course I wonât,â Kara rasped. âCan you finish your monologue without the dramatic pauses? Iâm on the clock.â
Lex smirked at her.
âThis castle was built on a conduit of energy- a ley line. Actually several, and they converge beneath our feet. That and the peculiar construction -sandwiched within these walls are layers of copper, cold-hammered silver, and pure selenium- make it perfect for my purposes.â
âWhat does that have to do with me?â
âOh no no no,â Lex laughed, ânot everything is about you, Supergirl. This is about Lena.â
Kara heard a muffled cry and looked around frantically.
âSheâll join us shortly,â said âLex. I wasnât finished.â
âYou talk too much.â
âOh indeed. You know, Iâve wondered what she sees in an alien freak like you. Why youâre so alluring to her. Iâve often wondered why you never made a move- I know you think about it. Fantasize about it.â
âShut up,â said Kara.
âIâve been watching, you know. Did you think Iâd let you out of my sight?â
Lex walked to a table and began toying with a long dagger with a thin, blue-black blade, drawing the edge over his thumb with a wince. He let a thin bloppy stream of his blood trickle into a silver chalice on the table before staunching the bleeding with a towel.
He turned to Kara sharply, holding the dagger.
âKnow what?â
âYour little secret? Or should I say, your big secret?â
âI havenât told her.â
He stopped and regarded her with a smile.
âI donât mean your real name, Kara,â Lex chuckled. âI mean the other secret, you moron. The one that made you switch from the skirt to pants.â
âWhat? No, of course notâŠâ
âI know what you want to do with her,â Lex said, kneeling to look Kara in the eye as the heavy chains weighed her down.
âFuck you,â Kara spat.
âOh dear me no, I donât play catcher. Anyway, as I was saying, I think I know what she sees in you. Turns out that rutting with inhuman monsters is in my half sisterâs blood. On her motherâs side, obviously. Someone in the deep end of my dear sisterâs gene pool interbred with one of the fair folk. The kindly ones. The fey.â
âThe what?â
Lex lashed out with the knife and a hot red sting slashed Karaâs cheek. To her shock she felt blood running down her jawline and chin. Lex let it drop into the chalice, mingling with his own, then stood up.â
âBring her!â he shouted. âOtis you oaf, bring her in.â
Karaâs attention snapped to the far end of the room. Otis Graves shoved Lena into the room. Kara knew it was her even with a black bag over her head. Lena was barefoot and bruised, her blazer and skirt torn from putting up a fight.
There was a thin chain of dark metal looped lazily around her neck.
âOnce I learned about this, I did what I always do,â said Lex. âI decided to master my circumstances. I studied, I learned, I applied what Iâd researched.â
He turned back to Kara, and as her vision cleared, she saw that Lex was drawn and haggard, thinner than she remembered.
âIt took me almost two years to prepare this ritual. I have walked trails blazed by gods. I had to beg, borrow, and steal to piece together the forbidden lore I need. I even had to strike treaties with the pit.â
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â said Kara.
âLex,â Lena panted through her mask. âDonât do this. Let her go. Please.â
Lex barked out a sharp laugh. âLet her go? Come on, sis. Thatâs Karaâs line.â
Lena let out a sharp gasp, visibly tensing.
âKara?â
âItâs me, Lee.â
âLee?â said Lex. âYou hate that nickname.â
âNot from her,â Lena said softly.
âLena, I donât know what crazy nonsense heâs talking but I will get us out of this. He has some kind of-â
Kara was cut off as Lex kicked her hard in the belly, driving the toe of his shoe up under her ribs. The world exploded in pain and Kara doubled over, almost retching in agony.
âAs much as Iâd like to spend the rest of the day making you feel pain, weâre on the clock. I have power to acquire, a world to master, and a deal with a devil to weasel out of.â
âLex,â said Lena. âYou didnât.â
âI did. Promised my immortal soul upon death, but alas, Iâm never going to die. Otis, get her in place.
Kara strained at her chains as the big oaf wrenched Lena around and bound her hands behind her back with ancient looking iron manacles.
âThe iron keeps her from trying any tricks,â Lex explained.
Kara was tired of his bullshit. The only thing that mattered was Lenaâs shocked cry of agony when Otis forced her to her knees on the stone floor, followed by the whimper as he yanked the bag from her head. Her right eye was swollen almost shut and she had a split lip.
Incandescent rage boiled in Karaâs chest with the fury of a newborn star. If not for the strange kryptonite sapping her powers, Otis Graves would burn, screaming in agony in the terrible wrath of a Kryptonianâs gaze.
He hurt her. He hurt her Lena.
âYou know how this is going to end, Lex.â
He was leafing through the pages of a heavy book on his work table.
âOut, Otis.â
Graves withdrew, smirking at Lena. She turned to Kara, eyes soft with emotion.
âNot often we get kidnapped together.â
âIâd rather have had a movie night.â
âUgh, can you two please save the tearful love confession? Iâm gagging.â
âWhy didnât you ever ask me out?â said Lena.
âIâm stupid,â Kara sighed. âI thought about it. I was scared. I thought⊠I donât know.â
Lex rolled his eyes. âDanvers, are you really going to pretend you didnât know that my sister is a rug muncher? Itâs the worst kept secret in the Luthor family history. Throwing her into a girlâs boarding school was like throwing a pig in shit, but then Mother has always been a dolt.â
Kara ground her teeth. âDonât talk about Lena like that.â
âOr?â said Lex. âAlright, look. Iâd love to spend a bit longer taunting you, but Iâm busy. The forms have been observed. I monologue, we taunt each other, I kill you.â
âNo,â said Kara. âYou try and fail and I drag you to jail.â
âNot this time,â said Lex.
âNo, not this time,â said Kara. âThis time I break my biggest rule.â
Lena stared at her across the room, eyes wide.
âIâm not going to let him hurt you anymore.â
âHow noble,â Lex deadpanned. âHold still, sis.â
He grabbed her by the chin, dabbing a thin paintbrush in the chalice, and began to paint lines and sworls on Lenaâs face in their mingled blood. When Lena tried to turn, her let go and backhanded her across the face. Lena almost fell to the floor and let out a pained yelp.
Kara pulled hard at the chains but the held fast. She felt like she was weighed down by an invisible force, unseen hands digging spectral fingers into her arms and legs.
âItâs interesting,â said Lex. âEveryone assumes you have one weakness- Kryptonite. But youâre just as vulnerable to magic as anyone else.â
âWhat?â said Kara. âYouâre insane.â
âI donât think he is,â Lena said, wincing at her split lip. âWhen I was a girl, there were rumors that my mother was a witch, and she did some⊠some things I didnât understand.â
Lex smirked.
He propped the book open on his forearm, making a final study of the markings heâd drawn on Lenaâs face.
âYou know the most annoying part?â said Lex. âItâs that you canât just do magic. The power source, as it were, has to come from somewhere. The most common place to get it is from ancestor fucking a dragon or a god damned fairy or some other absurd thing. I donât have the spark. But she does.â
He looked at Lena, a feral, hungry glint in his eye, and began to chant, reading from the book.
Kara flinched. The words sounded wrong, twisting and turning unnaturally as they fell from Lexâs mouth. The air grew heavy, as if a coat of soot and oil fell over everything, and a hideous stink of rotten eggs filled the room.
Lena cried out, eyes flying open in shock. She tried to say something but choked.
Kara lunged, desperate to free herself, to break the chains, to reach Lena and spirit her to safety the way she always did, but she was helpless. A terrible certainty of her own death fell over her like an ebon cloak, and she felt a distinct certainty of things, other presences in the room just out of sight.
âLex,â Lena pleaded, âStop. Please. Youâre hurting me.â
Kara let out a sharp snarl, a ripping sound of threat from deep in her chest.
Lex briefly broke his chant. âYes, the ritual will most likely kill you. No great loss. The world has enough degenerates and alien-fuckers as it is.â
He resumed his chanting, and Kara felt a sudden wave of agony through her body. She tried to scream but no sound came. It was as if a giantâs hands had shoved into her chest and begun crushing her lungs from the inside. She fell boneless to the floor, writhing in pain.
Lena lay on her side, tears streaming from her eyes, tears that tinged pink with blood as she jerked and convulsed, teeth clenched.
And Lex⊠Lex changed.
There was a soft crack and the rhythm of his chanting changed. He grew taller before Karaâs eyes. His arms swelled, corded with new muscle as his paunchy belly flattened and tightened into a washboard.
âThatâs right,â he snarled. âSoon it all be mine. All your beautiful power mine. I will be powered by the sun! Lex Luthor will fly faster than a speeding bullet, bend steel in his bare hands! I will be a god, and when I am I will finally lead humanity into its glory! My glory! Lex Luthor, the Man of Tomorrow! Invincible! Immortal!â
Kara could feel herself fading, the world irising shut as death stalked her from below, a hungry predator always waiting just beyond the edges of her gaze. Her hands were pale, the flesh drawn so tight to the bone that they seemed barely more than skeletal. Her hands actually slipped free of her manacles, but she might as well be buried beneath a mountain for all the good it did. She had no strength to move.
Yet she could speak.
âLena,â Kara rasped out, âLena!â
Lena forced her eyes open.
âYou have to fight him.â
âI canât,â said Lena, her face shattering into a mask of agony. âIt hurts so much, and Iâm too weak.â
âYou are not weak!â Kara spat, with all her remaining strength. âYouâre beautiful and powerful and⊠magical. Youâre my Lena.â
âKara,â Lena gasped.
âI love you.â
âKara!â
âI love you, Lena. Please, I need you to know.â
âI know,â Lena choked out, pinching her eyes shut, tears of blood streaking her face as she clenched her jaw in tooth shattering pain. âOh God I know, Kara. I love you too. I love you so much it hurts. I just wish we had more time. IâŠâ
She went silent, and still. Kara stared at her for an awful endless moment of white hot pain as something ate her alive from the heart out, yet that pain paled next to the agony of watching Lena suffer. She was almost glad that death would take her first, but prayed to the god of a distant broken world that Lena wouldnât have to see it. She felt a dim hope that somewhere past this, in fields beneath a crimson star there would be a place for them, that Rao would find a way to bring Lena home to Him, that He would not let her wander in the dark, forever lost.
Kara had fucking earned a little grace.
Then, Lenaâs eyes shot open, ablaze with stunning, brilliant light. She wrenched from the floor with a sudden strength and arched her back, screaming.
Lex looked down at her as the iron manacles fell ruined from her wrists and she yanked the chain from her throat, her hands wreathed in otherworldly light as the links snapped.
Slowly she rose to her feet, eyes still blazing.
Lena screamed, a banshee wail that shook the walls around them, and her cry seemed to swallow Lexâs frantic chanting, opening vast shark-toothed jaws of music that gouged into his feeble warbling and bit down, devouring it.
He stumbled back, frantically turning pages in his book.
âFuck you,â Lena snarled, and the words carried an intensity, a physical force just as Lexâs had, but where his sharp wrenching syllables turned the air somehow profane and tainted it with invisible filth, Lenaâs burned, not as fire but as daylight burns, clear and bright to chase dark crawling things back into their hateful shadows.
With a soft cracking sound, the strange chunk of tainted kryptonite turned a dull gray.
It had become lead.
Kara planted her palms and pushed up to kneel. She could feel, see the vitality coming back to her. Her frame expanded from skeletal and deathly thin to its normal self, slabs of lithe muscle bunching beneath her colors and crest as she stood and watched Lex shrinking.
Lena sagged, suddenly winded, grabbing the table for support.
Lex silent and stunned, wasted no opportunity. He snatched the dagger from where it lay and raised it high to slam down into Lenaâs back.
It clattered to the floor instead as Kara effortlessly grabbed his wrist, feeling her thumb drive between the bones of his forearm.
âI,â Kara said, âam tired of you hurting us.â
So she hurt him.
Lex screamed in agony as Kara closed her hand, pulling every bone in his forearm. She reached out and seized his throat, savoring the hate and terror in his eyes as red sun fire blazed in her own, savage loathing kindling a blaze in her chest. This ended now.
A soft hand fell on her shoulder.
âKara,â said Lena. âDonât.â
âLena,â she rasped.
âNot for him. For you. He made his own grave. Let him lie in it.â
Kara turned and looked at her. There was still blood on her face- the mingled painted lines smeared with her own. She looked so small and fragile and soft and the furnace that burned in Kara was doused, and suddenly nothing mattered but making her safe.
Kara let the sniveling coward go and brought Lena into her embrace, sheltering her with all her might.
âWe have to go. Now. Trust me.â
âYes,â Lex gasped, âtime to leave, take me to jail now.â
Kara looked down. Lenaâs eyes hardened.
âYouâre not going anywhere.â
Kara raised her foot and brought out down, snapping Lexâs ankle in a single sharp motion. He screamed and collapsed, crawling for the door.
Kara heaved Lena into a bridal carry and walked past him.
âSupergirl!â Lex bellowed, âyou canât leave me here! You donât know whatâs coming.â
âI donât care,â said Kara.
She shoved the door open with her foot, then turned to close it the same way. Lena clung to her, arms around her neck.
âLock him in.â
Kara did more than that. A quick flicker of heat vision welded the heavy metal door closed. Lex screamed and pleaded from the other side.
Something was coming. Something ancient.
âPlease. Get us out of here,â said Lena.
A crimson light blazed behind the door, bleeding through its edges. The stink of rotten eggs filled the corridor. Kara turned and carried Lena away.
âWait!â Lex called. âSupergirl! You canât leave me here!â
Kara ignored him and kept walking.
âNo,â Lex was screaming, âno, wait, we can make another deal, a trade, there has to be something I can-â
âYou tried to trick me,â something said in a voice like a hot knife dragged across a tombstone.
âWhat is that?â Kara whispered.
âI donât know and I donât want to,â said Lena. âGet us out of here. Take me home, Kara.â
Kara touched a soft kiss to her forehead, a promise of more and deeper to come. Once they were outside, Kara used the comm bead in her ear, and called Alex, told her what happened.
âLetâs go home, baby,â said Kara.
A year later, she flew back to the castle.
It was secluded, somehow forgotten, a tumbledown ruin. Heart thudding in her chest with uncharacteristic fear, she walked down the corridor into the underground and slammed the door open with her first.
No remains. No body. There was only one sign that Lex had been there at all. Scratches across the store floor, one with a fingernail still stuck in it.
As if he had been dragged.
Kara rocketed outside at supersonic speed, desperate to feel the sun and cleanse the oily, tainted feeling in that room. A cold, lingering dread welled inside her, twisting deep in her belly.
She had to be sure.
Part of her regretted what she did to the old ruin. It was history. Only part of her.
The rest of her flew fifth thousand feet up and came straight back down fast enough to destroy the stonework in massive shockwave that dug a crater where the building had stood seconds before. She then turned her heat vision on it, burning and melting. By the time she was done, by the time it no longer felt like she was being watched, as if she might be followed, there was nothing left but a smoldering, glassy crater. It looked like someone had dropped an atomic bomb.
It still felt like something slithered beneath, but whatever it was, it would not follow and that was all that mattered.
Kara flew. She had places to be. Sheâd already planned a date night with Lena.
Alex was watching their baby.
âAgatha and Rio arrived at school together this morning,â Jen says by way of greeting, dropping her books on the table and joining Alice and Lilia.
Alice looks up, half intrigued, but Lilia keeps her head down, ignoring Jen except for a little wave in greeting.
Itâs before school, and the staff room is mostly empty, giving them plenty of space to gossip before the school day starts. Though not a lot of time, the bell for first period is about to ring so they better make this quick.
âWhen you say âarrived togetherâ do you mean they got out of the same car, or just walked into the building together?" Alice asks.
Jen deflates a little. âI saw them walk into the building together.â
âThen that proves nothing,â Alice says, returning to her book too.
Itâs been a hot topic of discussion over the last few months, whatâs going on between the two of them, ever since Alice had seen them in the hallway together, Agatha laughing at something Rio said.Â
The way Alice tells it, Rio even touched Agathaâs arm, but that detail was added after a few retellings so Jen isnât so sure about that part.
Either way, ever since they noticed, they canât stop speculating, because even just the few times Jen has seen them interact since, thereâs definitely been a vibe.
Lilia has repeated on multiple occasions that she thinks theyâre together, but they need proof.
And Jen is determined to find it.
---
âSomeone sent Agatha flowers.â
Jen grins, Alice always gets the good gossip.
âWho are they from?â Jen asks. Thereâs a pile of homework she needs to grade before her next class but this is more important.
âIâm not sure, I was in the main office when they got delivered. I managed to sneak a look at the card but all it had on it was a little green heart.â
Jen thinks about this for a minute. âA secret admirer perhaps? Maybe even one who teaches biology a few doors down.â
âThereâs no way to prove that,â Alice says, but she still looks on board with this information.
âWhat if we just ask Agatha?â Jen asks, keeping a straight face for as long as she can before she bursts out laughing, Alice, and even Lilia joining in.
âItâd be your funeral,â Alice says.
And Jen knows it would be.
Agatha is snarky and no bullshit and you always want her on your side in an argument. Thereâs no way sheâs risking Agathaâs bad side.
When sheâd first met Agatha, sheâd wondered why someone like her would even want to be a teacher, and then sheâd actually seen her with her students and sheâd changed her mind. Agatha might be scary, but she has a way with kids that Jen didnât expect.
Maybe itâs the no bullshit thing that kids respect, but whatever it is, the kids love Agatha and she seems to love them too.
But there is still no way sheâd ever ask Agatha about her personal life. From what Jen can gather from their limited interactions is that Agatha is a private person, and sheâs not going to question that.
She really hopes Agatha never finds out that their favourite way to spend their lunch break is gossip about her and the chemistry she clearly has with Rio.

Happy 10th anniversary Carmilla đ€
every iconic gay kiss in xena in all its 90s censorship glory đ
Ah, the cut-away kiss, the -just-on-the-cheek-reveal kiss, the in-a-manâs-body kiss, the buddy-breathing kiss⊠all of them classic.
The second kiss though⊠that deserves a thing of its own. For those unfamiliar with this 2nd season episode, the takeaway is that the beauty pageant is won by a transwoman (played by Karen Dior, a bisexual adult films actor who was a male-identified female impersonator and AIDS activist). So yeah, someone can say âXenaâs really just kissing a dude in a dressâ as a handwave, but in-universe Xena is the only one who is aware Artifys is trans and never once does anything except immediately accept her identity. When she kisses Xena, weâre seeing Gabrielle processing the sight of her gal pal getting passionately kissed by another woman⊠and realising that she, that both of them, are clearly okay with that.
And as the article linked above mentions, Lucy clearly being okay with the kiss despite Karenâs HIV/AIDS status, not just in itself but being filmed and basically distributed around the world? That is a fucking statement a lot of other people wouldnât have been brave enough to make.
Time to break out the Xena DVDs again, gang
It took four calls before Lena answered. It crawled across her side table, vibrating angrily like some persnickety insect until she gave it the attention she wanted.
You could just turn it off.
âWhat do you want, Danvers?â
Alexâs voice was thick.
âWe canât find Kara.â
Lena let out a slow, long, theatrical sigh. âSo now youâre accusing me of crimes over the phone. At least your ex had the courtesy to cuff me in person.â
Alexâs patience was clearly short enough, and wearing thinner.
âIâm not calling you to accuse you. Iâm calling you to ask for help.â
âAnd why would I do that?â
âBecause sheâs burned out her powers and we canât find her, Luthor. Supergirl is missing and sheâs powerless.â
Lena licked her lips.
âIs this some kind of weird test to see if Iâll try to kill her? An entrapment scheme or something?â
âFirst of all,â said Alex, âfuck you.â
âMutual,â said Lena. âWhat was the second part?â
âThe second part is that I know you. I know youâre pissed off at her. I also know that you donât react the way youâve acted because your BFF lied to you, Lena. Just like I know that buying a $875 million company isnât what friends are fucking for.â
âIâm sure I have no idea what you mean,â Lena snapped.
âRight. Help us find her.â
âNo,â Lena said, coolly. âGoodnight, Director.â
Lena stabbed the end call key with her finger, resolving to herself that L-Corp was going to release a smart phone that made it more satisfying to hang up on people.
Then she very pointedly did not go out looking for Kara. Instead, she boiled water for tea, and spread open a technical journal on her lap.
After ten minutes, she had not drunk the tea, and her attention was sliding off the abstract like the wrong end of two magnets jammed together. Rubbing at her eyes, she decided sheâd had too long a day for even light reading, and decided to enjoy a news broadcast with her tea.
Of *course* the lead story was Supergirl. She tried putting on the Lakehawks game, but that had been preempted for Supergirl coverage.
She turned to the science channel. Oh, of course theyâd decided that tonight was the night to premier some ridiculous companion documentary for the World of Krypton exhibit running downtown at the convention center, and of course Lena works tune in right as Kara appeared on screen, grinning ear to ear as she charitably gave some literal kid reporter the interview of her lifetime, fielding softball questions about her dead planet.
âWhat do you miss most?â the kid asked.
Lena saw it, saw it the way only someone who knew Supergirl was just Kara Danvers, the nerdy, dorky, kinda basic goof in a pompous costume, could. The flash of real pain in the heroâs eyes, the softness in her voice, like she was apologizing for the honest of her answer.
âRed sunrises,â said Kara.
Lena threw the teacup across the room, and it shattered across the screen, leaving the dregs tricking down the surface. Lena wished the TV had been knocked out, but the screen was shielded by a transparent aluminum sheâd invented herself.
So she changed the channel, just in time to get a face full of The Princess Bride, just as Buttercup was shoving a then-disguised Westley down the hill as he shouted the line the revealed his identity.
âOh fuck you all,â Lena muttered, as she scooped her keys from the kitchen counter.
Lena decided it was a night for subtlety, so she took the BMW, driving with the top down and and her phone in her jacket pocket, so she could feel it if someone called.
Lena drove for the better part of an hour, reflecting on the absurdity of simply looking for Kara in a sprawling city; National City had about two thirds the population of Metropolis, but it covered nearly four times the land area and was surrounded by sprawling suburbs that extended the entire metro area to the size of a small state.
This was hopeless, unless Lena knew where to go.
You know what you have to do. You know what youâve always had to do.
Kara answered on the third ring.
âHi.â
Her voice was tiny and small, and Lena felt like she was clutching some small fragile thing to her cheek.
âHey,â she said, with all the softness she could muster with the top down. She pulled to a stop on the side of Ocean Avenue so she could soften it further. âI heard what happened.â
âI beat the monster.â
âI know,â said Lena. âYou always do. Where are you, Kara?â
There was a beat of silence.
âI donât know who out you up to this, but you donât have to do it, Lena. I know how you feel about me now.â
No, you fucking donât, Lena thought, before she could silence her own frantic mind. If you knew you wouldnât have lied to me.
âTell me where you are.â
âIâm where I belong,â Kara sighed, the hint of slurring in her words hinting that sheâd been drinking.
Then she hung up.
A wave of anger welled in Lenaâs chest, and she clenched her teeth, seizing the shift lever to throw the car in drive and head home; Kara and her sister could handle their own bullshit.
She didnât drive home.
Lena arrived at the convention center in a frantic five minutes, parking crazily in a towing zone. Finding a way in took another few minutes, and soon the flat soles of her tennis shoes were squeaking as they echoed across the polished granite floors of the lobby.
She found Kara in the exhibit, surrounded by quiet, dark displays as she stood in front of a bannered exhibit proclaiming âRAO, THE SUN OF KRYPTONâ.
Kara ignored Lena as she approached, tipping back a sloshing, mostly empty bottle of Jack Daniels to take a hearty gulp.
âKara?â said Lena.
Kara swayed slightly on her feet. Sheâd gotten a raincoat somewhere and put it on over her suit, cape and all, and even from a distance she stank of whiskey. She was staring at the display in front of her, an expansive orrery surrounding a lit model of Rao. Lena had never seen her so haggard, even her lustrous hair limp sallow.
âHi,â Kara said, taking another drink.
âWhat are you doing?â
âChasing a red sunrise.â
Lena approached slowly, until they stood side by side.
She stole a quick glance. Kara had a black eye and she was swaying slightly, and Lena wasnât sure if it was from the booze or the fight. She started to take another drink.
Grasping the bottle by the neck, Lena took it from her. Kara didnât resist as Lena tipped back a long pull on the bottle herself. It offended her palate in every possible way but one, but it was a good way to numb herself.
âAlex send you?â
âNo,â said Lena. âShe just had to tell me. She knew Iâd send myself.â
âWhy?â
âBecause sheâs a lot more observant than you are.â
Kara studied her for a moment, then reached for the bottle back.
Lena looked at it. âHow much of this have you had?â
âNot enough,â said Kara, taking another drink.â
âIf you insist on destroying your liver, at least let me give you something that actually tastes good.â
âIt all tastes like paint thinner,â said Kara.
Lena sighed. âGet in the car.â
Kara shrugged and followed Lena out, flopping extravagantly in the passengerâs seat. Lena drove in silence, using the excuse that the wind noise made it too hard to talk.
When they arrived at Lenaâs apartment, she practically shoved Kara inside, and poured the rest of the swill down the drain.
âHey,â Kara muttered.
âThereâs still some of your clothes in the guest bedroom. Take that damned suit off and put on something else.â
Kara complied, trudging into the bedroom. She emerged a moment later, looking small and sad with her hands tucked up inside an oversized hoodie, wobbling giving Lena a glassy look.
As she sat down, Lena handed her a glass of wine and perched on the edge of the couch cushion beside her, gently pressing an ice pack to her eye. Kara leaned into it and let out a soft, unsteady sigh.
âPain hurts,â she observed.
âItâll do that.â
Then she went quiet, sinking into Lenaâs couch with Lenaâs ice pack pressed to her face. Lena stepped into the kitchen and pulled out her phone. Alex answered immediately.
âI have her.â
âThank God. Iâll be over to get her in a few minutes.â
âNo you wonât,â Lena sighed.
Alex didnât answer her for a too-long pause.
âYeah. Call me in the morning.â
âWill do.â
Kara had found the wine bottle when Lena came back, and was taking a drink form it. Lena sat down next to her and took it, drawing on it hard before passing it back.â
âWhat now?â said Kara.
âIs the ice still cold?â
âYeah.â
Kara curled up next to Lena, bringing her legs up, her toes wiggling in empty air. Lena sighed and found her a blanket, spreading it over her too carefully.
As soon as Lena sat down, Kara spread the blanket over her, too, and Lena noticed that her absurd body heat hadnât abated from the loss of her powers.
âYou have tea on your TV,â Kara observed.
âYeah,â said Lena.
It took her a few minutes to find something on television that wasnât Supergirl or The Fox and the Hound.
(Fucking seriously?)
Nature documentaries were Karaâs kryptonite, to turn a phrase, and soon she was sleeping on Lenaâs shoulder, the ice bag fallen into her lap. Lena stared down at the soft features of the surpassingly lovely little goddess snoozing against her and couldnât help it anymore.
She started to weep softly, her shoulders hitching as she struggled to stop it, knowing the attempt was hopeless.
It got worse when Kara began to purr, a deep and soothing rumble in her chest that seemed to seep into Lenaâs bones. After a moment she realized that Kara was crying too; sheâd woken up.
âIâm sorry,â she whimpered. âIâm so fucking sorry, Lena. I canât⊠I canât breathe Iâm so sorry. I lost my red sunrise. I canât lose you too. Iâll do anything. Please let me make it up to you I promise I will, please.â
Lena shifted to a more comfortable position, known this was it for the night, that something had shifted. No, shattered. She was tired of being angry, of being afraid, if thinking of could-have-beens and come-what-mays. Yes, Kara had lied. Lena had lied. Theyâd kept secrets and been stupid and and theyâd hurt each other, but nothing in the world, no principles or closely held rules or petty anger would justify watching her suffer like this.
She was careful as she cupped Karaâs jaw, avoiding the injury, feeling a flash of rage at whoever had done this to her. (That his ass had been throughly kicked by an angry Kryptonian was irrelevant; her vengeance would not be forestalled.)
The kiss was quiet and gentle, at once too soft and quick, more request than declaration, and Kara swiftly answered with one so fierce and honest and hopeful that Lena didnât care that Karaâs mouth tasted like whiskey and wine.
When it was over, Lena found herself whispering, âAs you wish.â

i'd like to think you could just walk into a diner in national city and see supergirl (costume and all, no fucks given) and lena luthor making out like teenagers in a corner booth
[Ao3]
The first time Supergirl comes to The Intergalactic, sheâs thrown straight through its glass doors by a giant space lizard.
Itâs really not how Ellie imagined meeting the cityâs superhero. Itâs not that she thought sheâd actually ever meet Supergirl, least of all at work. Tucked away in a side-street near National City University and surviving in a cramped space, with minimal staff, and decor left from the beginning of the Space Age, The Intergalactic mostly sees harried college students and late-night party-goers in need of some fuel. Alien attacks and billowing capes are usually not on the menu.
She has no time to be disappointed by the circumstances of their chance meeting, though. She cannot feel anything beyond absolute terror, really, given the giant space lizard that just made the Girl of Steel demolish their sleepy burger jointâs entrance.
But then, Supergirl climbs back to her feet as she always does, shoulders squared, arms raised, ready to fight. She winces a little at the damage, shooting an apologetic smile towards Ellie before sheâd fly up up and away, dragging the lizard into the sky with her. The sight of it is so fucking cool that for a second, Ellie is even distracted from the absolute wreckage around her.
#supercorp #so good!
i wish i could telepathically communicate to all the young gays that watching Xena is worth it even with our much higher standards today for lgbt characters in media. the cast crew writers and showrunners never panicked when they discovered that their characters were driven by romantic love and were pulled back only by the network to prevent it from becoming textual. by season 4 they established them as souls in love reincarnated together forever and never tried in earnest to pair them with men. by the end of season 5 they stopped that altogether. by season 6, it is as explicit as they were able to make it given the restraints at the time, and they did so much to signal to queer audiences that Xena and Gabrielle were one of us. like Xena presenting Gabrielle, a lover of written word, with a poem by Sappho as a gift (and becoming adorably shy and blushing as she reads it).
there is so much joy in seeing just how effectively they were able to convey the romantic nature of their love and companionship despite the opposition. physical attraction is clear in the s6 episodes âWhoâs Gurkhanâ and âWhen Fates Collideâ. âWhen Fates Collideâ and âReturn of the Valkyrieâ are so dizzyingly and overtly romantic that i still canât believe they pulled it off. when viewed in its full context it is really an epic and beautiful love story. :)
Superbait
Happy Supercorp Sunday, yaâll!
6 months post finale, a short and funny scene that brings together Lena and Kara despite Kara stupidly coming out to the world as Supergirl.
Superbait on AO3
With a shatter of glass, Supergirl burst through the window of a dilapidated old factory building, eyes searching for one thing and one thing only. She let out a relieved sigh when she spotted the familiar dark hair across the open space, stuck to the concrete wall between two rusted large beams.
"Lena! I'm here to rescue you!" Supergirl shouted triumphantly as she landed in her quintessential hero pose, flashing a big grin.
Instead of the relieved look Supergirl expected, Lena looked up and frowned with an arched brow. "I told you I could handle myself."
Kara tentatively flew over and tried to ignore the harsh stare pointed at her. Lena was completely plastered to the wall with a white stringy substance, covered from toes to neck. Kara couldnât see Lenaâs arms, but she was sure if Lena was able, they would be crossed in indignation. Even with just her face visible Kara knew she needed to tread lightly.Â
"Ah, well, I mean it does look like you have everything under controlâŠâ Kara glanced at her friend only able to move her head. âDefinitely, completely under control, but maybe you could use my help?" Kara ventured with a tentative smile as she carefully approached her friend.
Lena rolled her eyes. "How did you even know to look for me? I didn't hit my watch. I didnât call for you."
"You didn't show up to taco Tuesday lunchâŠ"
"Kara. I havenât been in weeks."
"I know. But then you also werenât at work, andâŠâ Kara shrugged at a loss for words.
Lena still looked at Kara skeptically, so Kara plowed on. âLook, I know your mad that I-" but Kara couldn't finish her thought before she was thrust backwards, a foot away from Lena, attached to the wall with the same white, sticky material.Â
And Kara looked out at the city, her city, and knew it would be alright because she had Lena by her side. And that was more than enough. She had her sun, and Lena had her world. They would always be stronger, together. The way soulmates always are.
Nothing but love.Â
