-- Diana and the Unicorn shows Diana, Princess of Wales, taming a unicorn in an image inspired by The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries at The Cloisters.

--The Princesse de Lamballe shows a close friend of Marie Antoinette who was killed during the French Revolution. This imaginary image situates her in a dream space, brought by the mob to the crocodile pool at the Jardin des Plantes.

-- Juana la Loca shows a queen of Spain in the 16th century, imprisoned in the tower where her father and brother kept her in order to steal her throne.

This painting was inspired by the Marian Wars of the 17th century in which the question of whether the Virgin Maria was born or conceived without original sin led to bloodshed, a cult of worship of the Immaculate Conception, and a vocabulary of symbolism to represent her conception without direct reference to sex, explicitly creating her as a holy female figure both linked to and in opposition to goddesses of fertility.
