Illustrations for War Horse by Micheal Morpurgo
Inspiration for the illustrative style came from WW1 and WW2 propaganda posters. I created a pinterest board for inspiration. (I generally keep my inspiration boards secret while I’m working on them)
After going through the initial sketching and planning out the illustration, I tend to work in layers using tracing paper so I can have multiple versions to edit or experiment with. I also scanned the image into the computer to test it with the type. The process moves back and forth between hand and digital until I’m ready to color it in photoshop.
The process of logo creation for a project rebranding the Shaker Seed Company. Exploratory sketching, tighter sketching and narrowing down to three ideas. The last idea completes the process as I finalize the details of the logo.
The Concept: The original company innovated the sale of seeds in packets and sold them to a then unreached rural market. Today’s untapped agricultural market is urban and so I revived the company as a co-op that provides seeds and garden supplies designed for the small spaces of city dwelling and promoting a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle. I also renamed the company Shaker Urban Garden.
My process for distressing type by hand. I used the method to create the titles for a project that dealt with the dangerous chemicals found in our personal care products.
I found that crinkling the paper when it’s a damp makes the ink break. Then it can be rubbed off to create a degraded look. Don’t get the paper too wet, though, or it’ll rip.
Cover for Shred \ a snowboarding magazine I created for an experimental type class.
A quick exercise in developing a new homepage for the Tom’s of Maine Online Store. Until I went through this process I didn’t understand the importance of wireframes and creating simple user tests. I think graphic designers majors need to take more UX classes.
Exploration for choosing a title and logo for a hypothetical film festival showing the movies of director Louis Malle. The chosen films are about young protagonists confronting adulthood and responsibility.
In a shifting world innocence is lost to the darker side of the adult world as young people observe and engage with the corruption around them.
