The mask that almost fell | Alex and Jenny
Hurriedly, Jenny made her way through the streets and crowds through the most crowded place possible - easily in New York - in a last ditch attempt to throw Alex off the scent. If Alex was still intent on catching âThe Masqueraderâ. She hoped not.
In her rushed desire to escape, Jenny didnât watch where she was going. She had lost concentration on the road in front of her for just one second when she bumped into someone. She was going to mutter a quick apology and go on when she heard her voice. It was Alex.
"Ah! Alex!" Jenny almost leapt up in shock. "Uh, hi Alex." She had been so close. Just that close to being found out and caught. âUh, what are you doing here?â
Alex wasnât so surprised to see Jenny there. Her friend was known to love those places like parks and similiar. Places crowded with any different kind of people. Her tone, though, had something different. âEh, I was around patroling with a colleague⊠That I lost, to be honest.â She gave a look around, knowing that she would never find him again in that mess.
"Actually, I saw the Masquerader. You know, that street magician - I wanted to make her some questions about the Horsemen but she just ran away. Suspiciously."
"Ah- uh, the Masquerader? Never heard of her," Jenny replied quickly, almost too quickly, she immediately realized. "Well- I'd be really scared too if you came up to me about the Horsemen - I hope I didn't kill anyone. Really."Â
She paused for a moment, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. "So, uh, wanna go and find your colleague together?" she tried, attempting to make Alex less suspicious of her. "Unless he's not really that important, of course."
Ugh, I feel you. Like really, I love music.
Well, I work with music, so I donât even have to answer that.

Drunken Secrets || Jenny & Dylan
"James Carter, screw him," Jenny muttered angrily, punching a weak fist into the air. "Heâs horrible, going around and hooking up with every girl in sight and now heâs going out with my friend.â She gave a pathetic glare in a generic direction. âHeâs just so stupid, ya know? Like, literally, Iâve been yâr best friend for years, James, and you canât even see it.Â
Spend the night listening to a girlâs problems was definitely how Dylan didnât want to do, but by now there was nothing he could do about it, so he just remained in silence, pretending to listen what she was saying. He concluded it was just a problem with one guy, and it didnât help to keep him interested on it at all. He just nodded when she stopped talking, âYeah, sure⊠stupidâŠâ He took another sip of his drink without saying anything else.
"Funny I didn't complain when you hit on Alex," she continued her moaning. "It was hilarious though, it's like the first time y'got rejected by a girl. I bet your cheek stung for weeeeeks." she scowled. "You deserve it now, goddammit... now I think it's hilarious and I wan' Alex to do it again."

Jenny tumbled over the wall, dashing into the the public toiletâs last cubicle. She locked herself into it before she quickly changed clothes. Afterwards she shoved everything into her duffel untidily before she lifted the piece of wood in the far corner of the stall.
Sheâd known about the hidey-hole on one of her first disappearing acts. It used to connect to the janitorâs cupboard, but the lock was broken and the key had snapped in half inside the lock during a poor attempt to open it again, so they hadnât bothered with the stingy cupboard anymore. There was part of the wall in Jennyâs current cubicle that had fallen apart, revealing a small hole that was just large enough for her bag. The management had obviously tried - and failed - to repair it, so they had just nailed a wooden board over it, which turned out to work extremely well in Jennyâs favor because nobody seemed to notice the hole.
After shoving her bag inside the wall and closing the hole up again, she took a deep breath and walked out of the cubicle.
Alex had lost her again. She hated when that happened, when she just lost her target. It had been luck, she wanted to think. But something was still strange, to her eyes: the fact that the Masquerader ran away without any obvious reason. Alex only could think that the magician had something to hide, something terrible, and that recognized her and knew she was an FBI agent. There was no other possible and reasonable explanation.
She sighed and decided to go back to her colleague - who probably didnât even notice she had been gone. While she was walking, trying to find the way back to the start point, Alexâs mind couldnât stop wondering about how strange were the attitudes of the girl she was chasing just a few moments ago and how similar some of her movements seemed. She shook her head, as if she was trying to get those thoughts out of her head. âNah. Itâs impossible.â she muttered.
All of a sudden, she bumped into someone. âGosh, Iâm so sorry, I wasnât-â she stopped and looked to the friend she had in front of the eyes. âOh. Hey, Jenny.â

Jenny didnât get drunk easily. In fact, she didnât get drunk at all. Mostly because she hated beer, and it was Jamesâ job to get drunk and get hangovers and plead for her to take him home the next morning. Of course, sheâd always agreed to it, but from now on, she wasnât so sure.
James. Even thinking about him made her want do down another pint of the foul tasting liquid. Ugh, James. She shook her head to clear her mind of the thoughts of the stupid⊠person. He wasnât even worth thinking about.
"Heâs horribleeee," she slurred, grabbing onto the arm of the nearest person. "Does he havâta dash a girlâs dreams like that? I canât believe I let myself fall for himmmâŠ"
Dylan had the perfect answer to all his problems: beer. So, of course, this time wouldnât be different. He just walked to the same bar he used to go, order the beer and sat on the counter and drank for what seemed to be one hour until he realize it wasnât a good idea.
The beer wasnât help him at all unless his point was to get drunk so he couldnât find his way back home. His problems just were too much this time and there was nothing he could do about it. He heard someone saying something he took one more second to understand. He took a sip of your drink before answer her. âYeah, I suppose it was the worst thing for you to do⊠sorry, who are we talking about again?â Dylan looked at Jenny, but didnât actually recognize her, although he knew heâs seen her before.

The mask that almost fell | Alex and Jenny
Jenny darted into a familiar alleyway which would lead to the back wall of one of the small parks. Hopefully if she was lucky she could scale the wall without being seen. The park was a familiar haunt, and there was a compartment - or a hidey hole, really, that she could stuff her duffel bag into. Extremely convenient, but it relied on speed and luck - she had to break through the crowd while losing Alex.Â
Alex followed the girl, bumping into people and elbowing through the crowd, creating a narrow passage that separated her from the Masquerader of a few inches. It was hard to walk in such a mess but, for how difficoult it could be, Alex didnât lose an eye on her suspect. She groaned when she almost tripped on a skateboard a kid must have lost and thought she had lost the target, when she caught an alleyway nearby.
She got into it and caught a glimpse of the girl climbing the wall and landing on the other side of it. âDamn!â Alex hissed through her teeth. Though she knew a shortcut that could have brought her to the other side and, eventually, she would have found the target there.

"And because youâre a friend, whether I like it or not," Jenny sighed fondly, putting her hands on Jamesâ shoulder so that he wouldnât stumble and fall. "You are really, really drunk."
"Yeah, you totally know everything. Yep, everythingâs spinning is normal for you, mr drunk guy," she rolled her eyes. "Yeah, you sound dumb right now. Youâre pretty smart usually, but right now, you sound dumb."
Jennyâs face fell at Jamesâ declaration. There was a funny aching feeling in her heart as she heard his words. There James went again, sleeping with every girl ever and professing his love for them, honeyed words tumbling out of his mouth like a river. But somehow this time was different. Maybe it was because she knew Diana? She didnât know.
He chuckled and tilted his head back and the chuckled a little more. âYeah- yeah whatever you say,â he slurred knowing very well even while intoxicated that Jenny was just saying that because she was his friend. âIâm not smart. Barely even passed my classes when I was in school.â He shrugged. âYou know I just cared about getting laid and playing sports and parties.â Â
Looking back over at her he noticed how her expression had changed. âWhatâs a matter Whirlpool?â he took a stumbling step towards her, placing his hand on her shoulder. âWas it somethinâ I said?âÂ
"Yeah, ladies' man and all that," Jenny muttered, rolling her eyes. "Have you even kept track of how many of them you still remember? I lost count after twenty three, and that was in two months," she raised her eyebrows in remembrance. "Actually, I do want to know how many of them you do remember."
"No, no, not you. Of course it's not you." She'd expected her voice to come out bitter and angry but it was just... sadness. "It's totally fine. Just.. leave it."
