Mid-Century Design Icon Jens Risom Turns 1005/6/2016 12:40PM
Mid-century modern designer Jens Risom turns 100 in May and is the last remaining member of the “Mid-Century Modern Masters” that sparked the golden age of “Mad Men.” Surface editor in chief Spencer Bailey discusses Risom’s influence and how mid-century modern design is as popular a half-century later. To my father, Jens Risom Thank you Dad for showing me what Good Design was all about and for encouraging me to follow the path to Architecture, a career I loved. Thank you also for introducing me to so many of your peers, friends and followers (many of whom I now consider friends).

We are the Stone family and we have three generations of admirers and owners of Jens Risom furniture. It all started with my father who purchases a solid wood Risom executive desk in the 1960's in Albany NY, which has passed down to me his eldest son and them younger brother. It will now be installed on our design studio along with a matching Risom conference tables and a pair of the original chairs. Eventually we plan this to be the desk of my daughter as her career moves forward. We all love this desk, no have worked hard to preserve and renew it over the years. I also have added a pair of recently designed for DWR chairs to our fireplace area in our Mid-Century Modern in New Canaan, CT along with the elegant black leather and Walnut writing desk, which sits in our library. All of these pieces are are part of our lives, and are still in use a d will be in use for many years, decades, and generations to come. Thank you Jens for wonderful design, simple elegance, and durable quality of your desks and chairs. We hope you can stop by on Ponds Ridge someday and see the results of your design in our home. It's an honor to be the recipient of your fine work.
