her attention is drawn to ruka— it’d been too long since the last recalled meeting and seeing her now was a refreshing sight to behold. before jennie could even react to the mention of that photoshoot, odd atelier was brought up. she scans the young girl, taking any hints that may be lurking. “once i establish myself within the company, i don’t see why we couldn’t talk over the possibility of you joining?” there’s a sheer significant amount of seriousness jennie tries poorly to conceal. a bold move in a place like that. “thank you but i’m not the only one with a congratulations in order! congratulations to you and the rest of the baby monster girls for debuting. how do you feel now that, that part is over?”

jennie, in all honesty, was hoping for the younger woman to relax— water down the formalities so the two could speak openly but it looked like it may take some time. no matter. she was up for the challenge. after being in the industry as long as she has, jennie was more than ready to shed light on the so-called ins & outs of the world they lived in & give guidance in a way she wished she had from the beginning. “i know you’ll do great,” she raises a fist to encourage ruka.

there wasn’t an ounce of doubt within her. dismissing the topic of joining the new up & coming company was easier said than done. jennie had a newfound admiration towards ruka for being able to speak her mind— even if she seemed to take back her words. the more & more jennie looks at her, the more she sees a resemblance of herself looking back… how could she sway ruka into thinking they aren’t that much different after all?

“ah,” it was plain to see the dedication & confidence ruka had in herself & her group. to believe they could have debuted sooner was easy for anyone to say but when she said it out loud, jennie believed her. these girls were good & worthy of every spotlight they dreamed of being in. “it’ll be overwhelming in the best way possible & nothing, & i mean nothing, beats hearing the cheers from your fans. your moment is coming, ruka, & i can’t wait to see it all unfold.”

Sungmin turned down the heat on the stove, and washed and dried his hands to bring her a blanket. The visible tiredness on her face wouldn't fool anyone, and she was aware of it, but he was still committed to feeding her a comforting meal, one that he had mastered over the years because cooking was never fun for him (until he was forced to do it by living alone).

The man laughed when she demanded him to continue, and while he stirred the stew, he resumed the story. "Where was I…? Oh yes, it had started to rain, and I got up from the table I was at. You know, at those food stalls on the street," He recounted as he opened a couple of packages of ramen to place them inside the stew to be cooked. "I grabbed my plate and someone else's beer and left! I was so drunk that time I didn't pay for the meal and left!" He laughed, shaking his head slightly. "I drank a beer that wasn't even mine too."

“What you offer is more than enough & I appreciate it. I just hope I provide the same for you when the time comes if you ever need it,” she adds, slipping in a few sips of beer in between words. After a long day’s work, a night in like this to unwind was, indeed, invaluable to her & she can’t find words to express appreciation except offer a grin each time their eyes met. “An adventure every day doesn’t sound so bad. At least she keeps you on your toes, right?”

His question prompts her to pause mid sip while thinking back on the past few weeks. Unfortunately, nothing spectacular happened as of late opposed to the disaster of her attempting to decorate for the upcoming holiday. “Hm, I’ve nothing like traveling to Japan however I’ve been put in charge with decorating the orphanage for valentine’s day— lets just say arts & crafts isn’t my specialty,” she snorts, “how was your trip to Japan though? I haven’t been there for a while now that I think of it.”

their dinner reservations were made for seven— yet Jennie is sitting in the restaurant’s parking lot an hour early thanks to being a bundle of nerves & excitement altogether! she scrolls through her phone to pass the time until she deems it right to send Sungmin a couple messages.

face blanched, uncreased eyes started and wild mouth gaped; this was the immediate response whenever ruka found herself in the presence of jennie. she was intimidating, in a good way. the last time ruka had seen her label senior, she still had orange locks flowing down her shoulders. she faltered but a second. "sunb—" at this, she petered out of her own words to correct herself. "unnie!" she beamed and broke into a long look, filling the air with silence until she had noticed the unease marked by her actions. "i saw your, um, coco photoshoot." she followed to clear the mood, but halting a little as a single thought crept into her mind. she wasn't sure whether to bring it up but her mouth had decided for her before she could even think it over. "you should sign me with oa as a solo, too. so we could collab and, you know. we'd make a fire track, i think." there was a lingering timidness in her tone that she was trying hard to play off. she didn't know whether the other would detect the half-meant joke but part of ruka needed jennie to keep the proposition in mind, for the uncertain future. "but really, congratulations! it's such a big step. really inspiring, honestly."

when the clock struck midnight on new year’s, jennie made a promise to master a new recipe every month with a friend of her choosing. january’s challenge? tiramisu with soojung and after moving a few schedules around— here they were. music fused with laughter rings in the kitchen as the two women dance around one another to get things done. jennie ends up singing nearly all the steps while her companion follows, their end product nigh.

their recipe calls for the lady fingers to be dipped on both sides— not soaked or they will get soggy. however, singing and dancing take precedence over dipping! unfortunately, skimming over a seemingly minute detail makes a big difference. as soon as they’re done, she takes a slice and watches it lean awkwardly to the side. “um.. . eonni, i don’t think it’s supposed to do that?” a flustered jennie looks on at her friend with a lopsided grin. “i— i know you did because i read them to you. well, i sang them but that’s besides the point!”

soft chatter & musical laughter painted the scene a pretty hue, quaint & lovely like the first snow coating the earth with a blanket of frosty affection. the invitation was well received, yewon more than happy to do her part in the kitchen as a thank you for such an event. used to working alone, in the solitude of the quiet of the dorm, it was a pleasant surprise to toil alongside others as they prepared a feast fit for all. however— there were other surprises, too, like the growing pains of going from one to many. like the easily made mistakes of novice chefs using the cooking wine as an apéritif... a gentle smile, ease & comfort floated to the other as she waved off the apology with a free hand, the other oven mitt pulling the hot pot of galbijjim off the stove-top burner. ❛ it's okay, really! the other bottle for serving is there.❜ she nodded towards the opposite counter where a bottle of a far more fragrant & decadent red stood sentry over the kitchen. ❛ that one is far more appetizing. ❜

the floodgates of embarrassment break free, seeping into every ounce of jennie’s existence. an awkward grin tugs at her lips while she struggles to keep her bout of laughter at bay— to which she fails miserably the second she locks eyes with the last person she served. their face says it all. “um— why don’t we let them finish what they have before serving another round,” she suggests, replacing the bottle in hand with the other. to say she was a wine connoisseur would be a lie, and, it must have been blatantly obvious from the way she observes the bottles. “how often do you cook with wine?”

a violent vibration from under her pillow yanks momo from her slumber and she jerks into reality, momentarily at a loss of who and where she is. a rare free day, she’d spent most of it in and out of consciousness – awakening only to cook and consume or idly scroll on her phone. most of today’s cat naps had only been thirty minutes to an hour at a stretch – but this last one had shifted from a nap into something far heavier; and so this phone call perhaps was a saving grace, stopping her from messing up her sleeping schedule any further.

her eyes barely open, adjusting to the streak of moonlight that beams through unshrouded windows, dousing the room in a silverly light. she blindly reaches for her phone, groggy and disoriented, though the vibrations refuse to cease. it’s not a notification nor text, not with this consistency. a phone call – but from who? the members rarely rang, and frankly she didn’t speak to many other people in general, especially not over call. finally, she locates it amongst the sheets and the illuminated screen puts such mystery to rest soon enough.

it’s jennie.

she sits ups, propping herself against her pillows as fingers running through the mess of hair to free her face. ‘hey, jennie,’ she answers, voice warm yet thick with remnants of sleep. “no, not a bad time at all, i’m glad you remembered that, of course i’m always here if you need a chat.” her curiousity is piqued, though concern rings louder. through her whispers and reference to momo’s previous offer she knew – something was weighing on her. something was pushing her – and the push was hard enough for her to seek momo out. whatever it was, momo was fully awake and fully ready to give her unwavering attention to the other.

“are you okay? what’s up?”

a sudden rush of guilt outweighs relief when jennie recognizes the familiar tone one usually has when first waking up. her brows tie together, a little apprehensive in baring all when asked if she was okay— even though this phone call was the sole reason of her being anything but. “well,” the pause rings loud with hesitation and a prolonged sigh that draws the silent beat longer, “do you ever have so many thoughts packed in your head you can’t think straight?”

for a second, she rethinks the words that came out, questioning whether or not it would make sense— adding any type of context now just might confuse the poor girl on the other end. usually an attempt to sort her thoughts alone ended with jennie falling asleep… this time around, she reached out to the first person who she believed would understand.

“i’m sorry if i don’t make sense… i don’t know how else to explain it.”

the sea of smiles fused with laughter fills her home, changing its usual calm and quiet charm to something more warm and bright— just how the holidays were meant to be. this year was jennie’s turn to host the annual christmas dinner and she was brimming with excitement to have everyone. dinner was still being made by a select few— those who could actually cook, and jennie took it upon herself to serve drinks and entertain.

a collection of wine bottles sat untouched in a corner of the kitchen, stirring her curiosity. perhaps they simply forgot about them and without needing anymore reason or explanation as to why, she opens one. she makes sure everyone gets a glass before enjoying one herself until a friend reveals the reason all those bottles sat intact. “oh my god!” jennie erupts with uncontrollable laughter and tries to muster up an apology while looking at the bottle she just served, “yewonah! i’m so sorry, should we get another bottle?”

jennie sits in the living room, alone, with the only companion being the unnerving silence that crept in without invitation— and the time of day certainly didn’t help either. she turns the television on for background noise only that leads to pointless pacing which grows ridiculously annoying with each step. not a single reason could be thought of to blame for being so antsy!

finally, an attempt to calm the buzzing nerves is made as she dramatically falls back into the sofa with her phone in hand, raking through her contacts. she glances at the clock before pressing the call button and waits for the line to be picked up— “momo? hey! i know it’s kinda late but i remembered you told me once if you need someone to talk to i'm always just one phone call away. so, this is that phone call,” every word comes out like a whisper yet the small smile that decides to appear can be heard. “i hope i didn’t catch you at a bad time?”

The thought occurs momentarily and she can’t help but laugh at it while moving to his side, peering at the options in the fridge. “I shouldn’t but I haven’t had it in a while so… beer and soda. Because why the hell not?” Carefully reaching around him, she grabs a couple bottles for the two of them and makes her way towards the table to have a seat. “By the way, thank you for cooking. I would’ve ordered takeout but nothing beats a home-cooked meal these days,” she cracks open two bottles of beer and pushes one over to him, “especially with good company.”

A few bites in and Jennie nearly melts in her chair. Like she said, nothing beats a home-cooked meal. It had been a while since she’d had one and even though sleep beckoned her, she could still enjoy every bite. “What other adventures have you had since I’ve been gone?”
