The Bad Kids and Food headcanons
Kristen can’t cook without instructions, but she knows how to make a filling meal. I’m talking like some leftover beef becoming a full on pasta bake in a few minutes. It comes naturally with being an older sister, cause it wasn’t uncommon for their parents to leave for cult religious reasons and not provide any meal prep for the kids with a house full of only frozen side dishes and air fryer meals.
Don’t let her bake whatsoever. No one knows how but she butchers everything she bakes. By the end of the ‘baking’ there’s gonna be clumps of flour in the ‘brownies’ that taste disgusting because she accidentally replaced sugar with salt. She hates frosting on desserts too, so store bought desserts don’t hit that sweet craving she has.
Her family cooks a ton of basic meals with minimal effort. Light seasoning, pan fried, mostly white meat, frozen cooked veggies. There’s a ton of snack foods in the pantry and everything is saved as leftovers. It’s not uncommon to find a ton of dishes wrapped in saran-wrap that were brought home from Potlucks or church events. The Applebees residence is definitely one of those that has no soda or sweets and so the first time Kristen has a dessert she goes hyper.
Riz could cook if he tried, but he’s way too focused on mysteries and clues to take the time to cook. He lives mostly off of snacks (get this boy some nutritious meals) and coffee. I think he does have comfort meals he makes every so often, but even then they’re simple meals that take barely any time to make and aren’t extremely nutritious.
I do think that Riz could bake, and would enjoy baking, but he much prefers to be a taste tester while someone else is baking. Usually it’s Adaine, but he enjoys using his sensitive senses (taste/smell) to determine what’s missing in recipes. Even though he’s reasonable, don’t leave him be if there’s a bowl of icing or cookie dough in the room. He will eat all of it. Salmonella threat or not.
The Gukgaks are a simple family. The pantry is full of off brand snacks (like off brand pop tarts or saltines), canned/boil to eat pastas, ramen, leftovers, and the counter space in the kitchen is mostly just coffee stuff. There is silverware somewhere in the house, but they eat with their hands because that’s all they really need. Finger foods are a staple during holiday events. When Sklonda gets the free time and energy to make a ‘proper’ meal, her and Riz can’t stop picking off pieces off food before it’s finished. Like they’re tearing off pieces of chicken sat on the counter, or snacking on cheese shredded in a bowl nearby. I think if they weren’t so busy, they’d eat a lot of protein heavy meals. Specifically I could see them being a red-meat family if it wasn’t more expensive than white-meat.
Adaine used to despise cooking (she lived in a house that had a lot of typical elven meals and if you didn’t like it, you either fended for yourself or didn’t eat that night. I like to think that Adaine has quite a few near-deadly allergies that are prominent in elven foods, so she spent a lot of nights not eating until Aelwyn would sneak her some snacks or food she grabbed when she snuck out) but now, she loves it and can’t stop cooking. Now that she can use cooking as a display of love for her friends, she does it all the time. In her free time from spell casting, she’ll make recipes or try out and adapt new ones from online. Her favorite things to cook are heavy winter meals (crock pot meals like beef and noodles or stews/soups) and enjoys seeing how happy the Bad Kids get (especially Fabian cause he hates being cold and hasn’t had good elven meals in forever).
She loves baking as well, but because the process is so finicky she doesn’t do it as often. Adaine is a major sucker for spice flavored desserts like Spice Cakes and beams when a recipe lets her throw open the pantry to the spice rack. It’s pretty common for her to bring desserts to a hangout, or to find Riz sitting on the counter taste-testing while she bakes. Eventually she teaches Aelwyn to bake too.
The Abernant house didn’t cook for themselves and were firm on only having elven meals because ‘everything else is bad’ (think of Americans who keep trying to claim something is American but it actually came from every culture beside America. That’s what I picture from them.) Snacking was also a no go because ‘if you were hungry you should’ve ate more at dinner’. There wasn’t any sweets or whatever in the house either, but the second Aelwyn could get a job she would bring back chocolate as a bribe for Adaine to not snitch on her sneaking out.
This boy can’t cook. Keep him out of the kitchen at all costs. He used to help Cathilda (in the way a typical kid would. Like, not actually helping but thinking he is) but never properly learned on his own. Cathilda has offered to help him learn but he is way too stubborn (hopefully he will accept the help soon). It’s not uncommon to step into the kitchen and find Fabian sneering at a pan that’s just.. entirely on fire like he’s at a hibachi.
While he can’t bake for a while, he does take the time to start learning because he enjoys desserts a lot. He’s also a part of the ‘my house didn’t exactly let us have sweets and I tried it and now I can’t stop’ party in the team. It’s a mess but he will always have a beaming smile even while covered in batter. He has a different apron for each mood he is in when he starts baking. Also he absolutely loves sweet-but-mostly-sour bakes like lemon bars or pineapple cake.
Seacaster Manor of course is a rich household (derogatory). The snacks in the house are all terrible, which is canon with the kippers. All the food is some expensive shit that no one even knows what recipe it could be used for (he has like ‘Banished Crystalline Sweet Powder’ rather than just.. sugar. The Bad Kids mock him for it every time they visit). The pantry is full of alcohol and Fabian will never step inside there alone out of disgust.
Fabian acts extremely picky because of the stuff he grew up on, but he will try literally anything (especially if Riz will eat it). I also like to think that he really enjoys Goblin Cuisine despite how much his family would hate it, and he keeps trying to convince Riz to cook every so often because Fabian loves the food. [I like to think Goblin Cuisine uses a lot of spices that will really hurt your tongue if you’re unprepared, like Indian food.] Also, Fabian is lactose intolerant but doesn’t acknowledge it and he has never tried seafood! Despite it being a ‘rich person’ food, Bill got way too tired of it after being on seas, so Fabian has never tried it. He also gets freaked out seeing the eyes of a creature still on it when he’s supposed to eat (like when there’s a full cooked bird or shrimp with eyes).
I think Gorgug is an amazing chef. He’s mostly a vegetarian both because of his parents being vegetarians and because he just doesn’t care much for meat. He is great at making protein heavy meals to make up for the lack of meat, and drinks a bunch of smoothies most would use for pre/post-workout (Ragh eventually asks for the recipe because it’s delicious and he can’t stop asking Gorgug to make two). Gorgug can definitely whip up a meal that has everyone stunned that it’s vegetarian, and he can make a large meal out of practically nothing.
Gorgug doesn’t love sweets. He’ll indulge every so often that The Bad Kids goes to Basrar’s, but he won’t really go out of his way to bake. I think he enjoys dairy based sweets mostly, and makes his own ice cream at home, but he doesn’t bake. There’s always ice cream at the Thistlespring Tree, but it’s some interesting flavor like cheese cake every time.
Digby and Wilma are vegetarians but did attempt to cook meats for Gorgug because he’s was an orc and growing and definitely needs the protein. However, Gorgug eventually decided he didn’t like meat and the two were so relieved and won’t stop saying ‘you got that from us’ when he mentions it. There’s always snacks laid out on the table or counters in the Thistlespring Tree because as tinkerers, they’re constantly just slightly hungry. Mostly it’s just fruit or veggies, but you can find cheese slices or tofu on a platter once in a while. Also, they compost food that isn’t used.
The second she could walk, Sandra Lynn began teaching Fig how to cook. They spend a lot of time together in the kitchen until the whole tiefling thing, in which Fig barely even eats dinner with her family anymore (Sandra Lynn always leaves dinner by her door). HOWEVER, after they made up Fig joined her back in the kitchen and they began to make a large cook book with every recipe Fig could scrape from her friends and the places she visited.
Fig learns to bake on her own to bring desserts to Bad Kids hangouts. She’s learned all of their favorite recipes and brings something special for all of them every time. Her favorite dessert is anything gooey. Lava cakes, jam filled cookies, marshmallow stuffed cookies, etc. There’s a ton of pictures in the kitchen of Fig covered in a mess of whatever she just baked and ate with a large grin on her face. She does use baking to clear her mind to think over lyrics or even take her mind off of writing music.
The Faeth house is very casual. There’s a bit of everything in the pantry, including any kind of snacks that Fig may want or stuff for when the Bad Kids come over. I think Sandra Lynn always makes sure to include a member of each food group in each meal. Always a protein, always a carb, always a vegetable, etc. I do think Fig rarely snacks and mostly has them for when she gets too immersed in music so she can grab something simple to eat before returning to playing music. There’s always options for Gorgug when he comes over (which becomes pretty frequent).
Fig also has oral allergy syndrome (allergic to pollen on fruits) but she Won’t. Stop. Eating. Fruit. [Me core] Sandra Lynn has to hide any fruits in the house before Fig can get to them or else a ‘what do you have in your mouth?’ situation plays out, with Sandra Lynn and Fig running around the house until they collapse in a fit of laughter and a careful scolding about eating fruit and taking meds after for the swelling.
Mordred Manor is very similar to the Faeth house. Tons of snack options, meals that tick every necessary food group, sweets and sugary foods (in moderation) like soda and ice cream. Meals are always large enough that any of the Bad Kids can steal some if necessary [They make sure to label which leftovers are vegetarian for Gorgug]. Anyone can suggest a meal or recipe to try or make their own food. It’s a very ‘free kitchen’ kind of spot and most of the Bad Kids who are too scared to try cooking or baking using their own kitchens or pantry items are completely free to use it for whatever.
The only rule in the kitchen is clean up after yourself and atleast put things in the sink when done [and, if you’re Riz, you have to have some kind of light on to indicate to others that you’re in there. Kristen screamed once after sneaking downstairs at night for a snack only to spot two reflective yellow eyes sitting atop the counter.]
