There is more than one story regarding the history of buckled monk strap shoes. The one thing everyone can agree on however is that they were indeed worn by monks, most likely monks of the 11th century (style gurus of their day), who favoured these shoes as a sturdy alternative to sandals.

Today they bridge the gap between a semi-formal shoe and a formal lace up like an Oxford. Known as both monk buckle or monk strap shoes, they look every bit as smart with a pair of turned up jeans as they do with a suit.
