The Rolling Stones - In The Stars
Sixty-two years after they released their first album, The Rolling Stones released yet another new album today. It is their 25th studio album. (32nd studio release, depending on how you count them.) I have been listening to this band for 62 years, and am delighted that they still have more to give. There is an excellent ensemble of guest musicians on Foreign Tongues. They also do a couple of fine covers by Amy Winehouse and Chuck Berry. So I'm going to kick off the weekend with their bluesy rendition of Chuck Berry's Beautiful Delilah.

Song Review(s): The Rolling Stones - “Rough and Twisted” and “In the Stars”
Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones have rediscovered their balls.
“Rough and Twisted” is appropriately titled, as the Stones go blue and red-hot angry. Mick Jagger blows mean harp, references Muddy Waters and drops a not-gratuitous f-bomb; Ronnie Wood plays nasty slide; and Keith Richards wraps his bandmates’ offerings in hard riffs.
So what if Steve Jordan’s bombastic drumming borders on the overpowering? This is the Rolling Stones sounding as good - and as hungry - as they have since 2016’s Blue & Lonesome.
So does that mean Foreign Tongues will be a masterwork?
Not according to single No. 2, “In the Stars,” which repurposes “Gimme Shelter”’s ooh-oohs and “Mixed Emotions’” riffs into a mid-tempo number that toggles and between mindful social commentary and mindless pop as Jagger sings:
Well there’s a poisonous cloud, there’s a sickness in the land/all the judges in their robes got their rubber stamps/well do you wanna dance ’til the walls cave in/yeah and the guitars scream and the choir still sings
Out July 10, Foreign Tongues features “one of (Charlie Watts’) final recording sessions,” alongside cameos from Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, Robert Smith and Chad Smith.
So far, the Stones are batting .500. If they can keep it up, Foreign Tongues will be their best album since … Hackney Diamonds.
