Week 11-12 Insights

1. Ber2Bytes

According to Ms. Rube, the one we interviewed, their main challenge is the limited repair services at their branch, often requiring major laptop repairs to be referred to another location.

Despite the challenges, their focus on affordability and quality service has driven growth and helped them build a loyal customer base across different places.

2. Rose Apparel

According to Ms. Marga, the one in charge of the store, their main challenge is having times when there are few customers and low sales. But even though they experienced it, they also show how dedication and passion for fashion can support the growth of a local business.

And they can further expand their reach by diversifying their product offerings, such as adding men's clothing or footwear.

3. Osmeña Hydraulic Hose & Bearing Center Incorporated

Sir Roy, the one we interviewed, shared that they also experience low sales at times. Regarding competitors, their pricing varies, some products are priced lower than others, while some are higher, as it all depends on the item.

This adaptability in pricing, along with their ability to navigate challenges, shows the resilience needed to sustain success over the years.

4. Moto Truck

Ms. Yasmin, the one we interviewed, shared that they regularly attend trainings and seminars to stay updated in their field.

While their business focuses solely on selling parts without offering repair or installation services, their commitment to quality and consistency has helped them build a trusted name in the industry over time.

5. Wannabees Family KTV

Wannabees Family KTV offers more than just a venue for singing, it creates an inviting space for families and friends to bond through music.

With its daily operations and a commitment to credibility, the business reflects how passion can be turned into a fulfilling. It shows how a personal hobby can inspire a business that brings happiness to others and builds community.

Week 11-12 of Interviewing Different Businesses

Me and my groupmates, Angel Jean Obsioma, Ian Gariel B. Ramas, and Francen P. Sellote, roam around the city to look for businesses that we can go to and ask the business owner or staff if we can ask a few questions regarding their business, so that we can gain knowledge and in-depth understanding about how business works, and we also asked permission if it is okay to take a picture.

Here is the list of the businesses we interviewed and the key information we gathered for week 11. 1. Ber2Bytes

Ber2Bytes is owned by Mr. Daniel Vincent Bertubin, established the Cagayan de Oro branch located at Metz Arcade, Barangay 24 Capt. Vicente Roa St., of their business in July of last year. They specialize in selling surplus or pre-owned laptops and accessories, offering some of the most affordable prices in the Cagayan de Oro branch. In addition to sales, they provide repair services, and their supplies are from Japan Surplus. The business has expanded to 12 branches, including locations in Iligan, Dipolog, Bukidnon, and the main branch in Dumaguete. They operate from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sundays. To ensure compliance, they hold a business permit, barangay clearance, DTI certification, certificate of registration, sanitary permit, and issue official invoice receipts.

2. Rose Apparel

Rose Apparel, owned by Ms. Rose Luyula, was established in 2022 and is located in Brgy. 24, Capt. Vicente Roa Street, Cagayan de Oro. The store offers a variety of clothing, including tops, dresses, and shorts, catering primarily to ladies. This is their only branch, and they operate with a single staff member. Their business hours are from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM, Monday to Sunday. The clothing items are sourced from suppliers in Manila. With a business permit and DTI registration, Rose Apparel upholds compliance.

3. Osmeña Hydraulic Hose & Bearing Center Incorporated

Osmeña Hydraulic Hose & Bearing Center Incorporated is a one-man corporation owned by Mr. Leonard and is located on Osmeña Street, Cagayan de Oro. Originally established in the 1980s, the business underwent a rebranding on September 25, 2017, adopting its current name. The company specializes as a dealer of hydraulic and pneumatic hoses and fittings, bearings, filters, hydraulic packing, and more. Additionally, they provide hydraulic packing repair services, showcasing their versatility in the industry. Sourcing their supplies from Manila, they operate with a team of 11 staff members and are open from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. With a single branch, they maintain a solid reputation, supported by their compliance with legal requirements, including a certificate of registration, certificate of occupancy, fire and safety inspection, and SEC registration.

4. Moto Truck

Moto Truck, owned by Mr. Patrick Chua, has been serving the community for approximately 30 years. The business operates three branches, located in Cugman, Valencia, and the main branch at 278 Osmeña Street, Cagayan de Oro. Specializing in truck spare parts and accessories, Moto Truck caters to a wide range of customer needs with supplies obtained directly from China. They have a total of 30 staff members, the business is open from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. To ensure compliance and reliability, Moto Truck holds a business permit, is DTI-registered, and provides official invoices. 5. Wannabees Family KTV

Wannabees Family KTV, owned by Ms. Vilma Go, started in 2023 and is located on Max Y. Suniel Street in Cagayan de Oro. The business is a place for families and friends to enjoy singing together. It is open every day from 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM and has three staff members. Ms. Go decided to open this business because of her love for singing. The business proudly holds a DTI registration, ensuring its credibility and compliance.

Week 9-10 Insights

1. Sneakers Insole

Ms. Hazel, whom we interviewed, shared that they had previously considered forming partnerships to expand their business.

While they have experienced periods of low sales, they managed to boost their income through their online store, which continues to be their source of revenue. Despite facing various challenges, they remain determined and committed to overcoming obstacles and ensuring the growth of their business.

2. Bullecer Metal Craft

Ms. Rosalinda Bullecer, whom we interviewed and who is also the wife of Mr. Rafael, shared that the business, along with the skills required for it, was passed down through her husband's family.

She mentioned that since their type of business is no longer as in-demand as it once was, their workers are now on-call and only report to the shop when a customer places a specific request.

She also proudly shared that the business has played a significant role in their lives, allowing their children to complete their education and providing the support their family needed over the years. Their story reminds us that dedication and perseverance can turn into a foundation for achieving dreams and supporting loved ones.

3. AC Gas LPG

Ms. Mae, the one we interviewed, shared that their company provides seminars to ensure employees are well-equipped with knowledge about the business and safety protocols.

She also mentioned that the problem they faced was when their delivery truck broke down, which greatly impacted their operations, as deliveries are crucial to their business. Their experience highlights the importance of preparation and maintaining key resources to minimize disruptions in critical processes.

4. Happy Pulp Food Packaging

The person we interviewed shared that they face challenges, such as periods of low sales. But during our visit, we saw that they were also busy because of customers coming, showcasing their dedication to overcoming difficulties and providing quality service. This reflects the importance of perseverance and adaptability in business, as even during challenging times, commitment and effort can lead to success.

5. 8Spot Billiard Hall

Mr. Sergs, the person we interviewed, shared that their decision to start this business came from a shared hobby among cousins, turning their passion into a livelihood.

He also mentioned facing challenges, such as dealing with competitors located nearby. Their story reflects how pursuing a hobby can lead to a fulfilling business, though it requires resilience to navigate competition effectively.

Week 9-10 of Interviewing Different Businesses

1. Sneakers Insole

Sneakers Insole is owned by Mr. Reuel Majaducon Ruelan II, which sells branded sneakers and shirts. It began as an online store in 2021, utilizing social media to reach customers. Mr. Ruel sourced his products from Manila-based suppliers, allowing him to offer a range of popular brands. With a successful online presence, Reuel established a physical store in 2023, located at 8th 2nd Street, Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro City.

The physical store operates Monday to Friday, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and is supported by a team of three staff members. The business has an area for their stocks at the store for managing inventory and ensuring product availability for both walk-in customers and online orders. With his business a DTI registered, a business permit, and Barangay clearance, Reuel combines both physical and online sales strategies to expand his reach in CDO’s retail market, aiming for consistent customer satisfaction and growth.

2. Bullecer Metal Craft

Bullecer Metal Craft is a business owned by Mr. Rafael M. Bullecer in which it has operated for 13 years, originally located in Corrales, Cagayan de Oro City. However, due to the sale of the original store space by Mr. Rafael’s mother, they recently relocated to 2nd St., Barangay Nazareth, CDO. They provide a wide range of metal crafting services; these include the creation of gates, grills, and various other metal structures, as well as repair and home service options.

They offer customers the flexibility to request custom designs, making their services highly tailored to individual needs. Mr. Rafael sources materials from local hardware stores in CDO and, with the help of three skilled on-call workers, manages every project to completion. Their usual business hours start at 8:00 AM, but they often accommodate customer requests on an urgent basis. This flexibility extends their service availability from Monday through Sunday. The business is DTI registered, have business permit, sanitary permit, and BIR. Despite being a small operation with a single branch, their reputation for quality work and customization has built a loyal customer base.

3. AC Gas LPG

AC Gas LPG, owned by Mr. Roberto Tan Reyes, is a well-established and authorized dealer of LPG gas products in Cagayan de Oro City. Mr. Roberto's business was established around the 1990s. Located along 8th-17th Streets in the Nazareth area, the business serves as a direct supplier for Fiesta Gas and also deals with popular brands like Petron Gasul and Prycegas. In addition to this, they offer a range of products, including stoves and essential stove accessories, which they got from Manila. The company operates 12 branches in total; some of them are in Gusa, Bulua, NHA, Canitoan, Cogon, and Nazareth. They have an overall staff of 60 members across all locations. At the Nazareth branch specifically, the staff includes two cashiers and one laborer, working together to provide efficient service.

In support of their large-scale operations, AC Gas LPG has its own warehouse near the Nazareth branch, but they are in the process of relocating the warehouse to Pagatpat. Ensuring adherence to regulatory standards, the business holds a business permit, a license to operate, a DILG permit, and a sanitary permit, and they also have a fire safety inspection certificate, which collectively reflect their commitment to safety and legal compliance in the LPG industry.

4. Happy Pulp Food Packaging

Happy Pulp Food Packaging, owned by Mr. Reynald Tan, was established in August 2023 and is located on Tomas Saco Street, Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro City. Specializing in food packaging, the store offers a range of products such as food containers, cups, and straws, catering to both individual and business needs. They also provide wholesale options on selected products, which attracts bulk buyers looking for reliable packaging supplies. Their products are sourced from suppliers in Manila. The business operates with a team of seven staff members and is open from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To maintain compliance, Happy Pulp holds a business permit and a certificate of registration.

5. 8Spot Billiard Hall

8Spot Billiard Hall, owned by Ms. Marjorica Joan Bautista, opened its doors on May 28, 2024, and is located on Pabayo Street, Cagayan de Oro City. Their opening hours are from 12:00 noon to 2:00 AM, Monday - Sunday. While primarily a billiard hall, offering four high-quality tables from the Kangaroo and Maxima brands, the business also sells some custom-made perfumes with oils sourced directly from Dubai. They provide a selection of food options sourced from Savemore and online suppliers. Some of their billiards cues are from Wadhus, CDO. They are also facing competition from two nearby establishments, McKenns Billiards and Snooks Billiard Hall. The business holds a business permit and has a dedicated bookkeeper at City Hall who helps manage their finances, ensuring regulatory compliance and financial organization.

Week 7-8 Insights

1. Adtech Computer Sales & Services

Mr. Cuenca shared some of the challenges that the Adtech Repair Services faced. The business experiences fluctuation in the number of customers and sales, with high demand typically occurring in July and August and a decrease in September and October.

When it comes to laptop or computer repairs, Mr. Cuenca emphasized the importance of customer consent before opening any device, especially if it's under a manufacturer's warranty. Repairing a device from another store could void its warranty if the repair shop is not authorized, which is why obtaining the customer's approval is crucial.

He also mentioned that most of the printers he repairs are Epson models. He explained that while some repairs are manageable, others can be extremely time-consuming, and sometimes the effort isn't justified, as replacing certain models might be more efficient.

2. Zeemart Convenience Store

According to Ms. Patty, they encounter challenges with sales, experiencing low numbers during the mornings, while sales tend to be higher in the evenings. However, they also faced issues with customers fighting at night, which adds an extra layer of difficulty to their operations. 3. PawsThru Pet Supplies

According to Ms. Angel and Mr. Julius, the ones we interviewed and in charge in the store, the problems they face include fluctuating sales, with some days experiencing low numbers while others are quite high. They also shared with us that, to improve their service, the staff needs to attend seminars to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for the store. Also, the reason why Ms. Marianne chose to start this business is because of her love for dogs, which drives her passion for providing quality pet supplies.

4. Loretta's Empanada

Ms. Dawn shared with us during our interview that the journey of Loretta's Empanada began with her grandmother, who started selling empanadas by bringing them to neighborhood gatherings. People enjoyed the treats and began requesting orders, which eventually led to the start of her grandmother's empanada business. This rich history fuels Ms. Dan’s passion for continuing the tradition and expanding the family legacy. And that also results in the logo that represents the face of her grandmother, honoring her legacy.

She also said that in her family, none of her relatives are interested in continuing the business due to the demanding nature of the work involved in making the empanadas, leaving her as the only one dedicated to it. She believes there is more potential in this business compared to their family’s other ventures, and she has also given ways to her siblings about their family business. 

One of the challenges they face is managing supplies, as high demand often exceeds the limited space in their store. To mitigate this, they have implemented a pre-order system. Ms. Dan also mentioned that some customers perceive their empanadas, priced at 35 pesos, as a bit expensive. However, she explained that the ingredients and preparation processes are not easy, resulting in a profit margin of around 50%. And she said that their empanadas are priced to be accessible for everyone to try.

5. GadgetPro Repair Services

Mr. Arjo, the owner and the one we interviewed, said that the typical challenges they face include dealing with unsatisfied clients and complaints. He said these issues are normal and inevitable in any business, but especially in repairs, where not all device issues can be fixed. Some customers have high expectations due to the shop's visibility on Facebook, expecting that every problem with their devices can be fixed, which is not always possible.

He also shared with us that he chose this line of work because repairing devices is both his hobby and passion. The repair industry, he explained, is fast-paced and profitable, especially for those with the necessary skills and talent. Over the years, he also invested in time training his staff, helping them improve their repair skills and knowledge to better support the business and meet customer expectations.

AdTech Computer Sales & Services

AdTech Computer Sales & Services is owned by Ms. Anne. They are selling computer parts and printers, and they also do computer and printer repairs. The business has two branches: the main branch located in Iligan City, which has been established for about 17 years, and the branch in Cagayan de Oro (CDO), which was established around 14 years ago. The CDO branch has shifted locations a few times, with its current physical store on Corrales Avenue open for the last two years. They operate from Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

During our interview, Mr. Cuenca, who is the one in charge of the CDO branch, shared that AdTech sources its supplies mainly from Manila, with those suppliers importing directly from the United States or China. AdTech also has legal requirements for their documents, like the BIR registration, DTI certificate, and barangay permit. These documents ensure AdTech operates legally and maintains a trustworthy reputation in the community.

2. Zeemart Convenience Store

Zeemart Convenience Store, located in Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro City, is a newly established 24/7 business that opened in May of this year. Owned by Mr. Zoren Jacob Jardin, the store has legal documents, including a DTI registration, business permit, and barangay clearance, to ensure full compliance with legal requirements. Zeemart operates with two staff members who work day and night shifts. Ms. Patty, the one who we interviewed at the time, shared with us that they get their supplies from Palaña, keeping shelves stocked with their products.

3. PawsThru Pet Supplies

PawsThru Pet Supplies, located on FJCW+XC2, 6th St. in Cagayan de Oro City, has been providing pet essentials like cat food, dog food, and other pet necessities, established in 2012. Owned by Ms. Marianne Sistoso Carreon, the store operates with two staff members at the Nazareth branch and is open from Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. PawsThru has expanded significantly over the years and now has four branches, with its main branch located in SM Downtown Recto. Although each branch operates under a different name, they are all owned by Ms. Carreon.

To operate responsibly and legally, PawsThru has permits and licenses. These include a sanitary permit, a business permit, and a license to operate issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry, which certifies that they meet industry standards for pet products. They are also registered with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). Together, these documents reflect the store’s commitment to providing safe and reliable products for pet owners in the community.

4. Loretta's Empanada

Loretta’s Empanada, located at Pabayo, Gaerlan St. in Cagayan de Oro City, is known for its freshly baked empanadas and coffee. Owned by Ms. Dawn Dy, the business first started online in 2019, but the empanada recipe has been passed down through three generations, dating back to the 1960s. The empanadas are all handmade, keeping the tradition alive with each batch. The physical store is set up in the former maid’s quarters of Loretta’s old house, an area that’s been carefully expanded to have their store.

The shop has four staff members, including Ms. Dawn herself, who actively helps in making empanadas. Loretta's Empanada is open from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., and offers catering services in addition to in-store purchases and ordering in Grab. And to operate smoothly, it has documents, these are DTI registration, business permit, Bureau of Fire certification, and sanitary permit. Though the CDO has a pork ban, their meat supplier has a certificate, allowing them to legally sell pork, and that is why they can still use pork in their empanadas.

5. GadgetPro Repair Services

GadgetPro Repair Services, owned by Mr. Arjo E. Bayer, has been doing repair services for three years, with the current name and location, which is located at Goking Building, Corner Jr. Borja, Corrales Ave., Cagayan de Oro City, established just a year ago this coming November. The business have two branches, the main branch, which is in Corrales, and another located in Uptown. They have a total of seven staff members, with five working at the main branch and two at the Uptown location. They are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

GadgetPro focuses mainly on repairing Apple products, including iPads, MacBooks, and iPhones, but they also handle repairs for selected Android smartphones. Their expertise lies in level 3 repairs, which cover complex issues such as motherboard problems, low power, no signal, data recovery, and other intricate repairs. And to ensure compliance, GadgetPro holds various important documents, including a DTI registration, BIR registration, city hall permits, SSS documentation, and TESDA NCIII certification.

Week 5-6 Insights

List of the insights that I gained from the interview:

1. Johnny's Auto Parts

During our interview with Johnny's Auto Parts, we gained valuable insights into how industry experience and customer-focused practices contribute to business success.

They shared that the reason Mr. Johnny chose this type of business was because of his previous work experience in the same industry. This background gave him the knowledge and experience needed to understand how the business works. This just shows that it also plays a big impact on having prior industry knowledge and experience when planning and building a business.

Having been operating for two decades just shows that Johnny's Auto Parts has already built a strong reputation in the community for being reliable and customer service. It can be seen that they were able to cater to local demand and maintain customer loyalty over the years. Additionally, with their location, it is accessible to customers as there is a parking space, making it convenient for the customers who own a car.

2. Royal Glass Supply

In our interview, we gained valuable insights into both the history and challenges of managing Royal Glass Supply.

Ms. Emilou Tumilap, the manager of Royal Glass Supply, shared that before it became Royal Glass Supply, the business was originally known as Tay Chin Glass, established in 1965 by Mr. Sherwin's grandfather. The business has been passed down through the generations, from his grandfather to his father, and now to Mr. Sherwin. And this just helps keep their family's legacy alive and ensures that their valuable experience and traditions are preserved.

Another thing that Ms. Emilou shared with us during our interview was the problems that they faced. One of them is the installation, especially backdrops when doing a home service, as installing a backdrop can be difficult. Another problem is the parking space because it does not have enough area, which makes it a bit inconvenient to customers who have cars. And this just shows that it is really important to really organize and plan when having a business to make services more convenient for customers.

3. Tech-Converge I.T. Solutions

Tech-Converge I.T. Solutions gave us insights into the company’s growth and the importance of listening to customer needs.

We were amazed by the story behind why Ms. Catherine decided to open a physical store for Tech-Converge I.T. Solutions. Ms. Jenny, the salesperson, shared with us that the business originally operated from home in Opol. However, after receiving numerous suggestions from customers who wished for a physical store, Ms. Catherine took their advice and made it a reality. And in every business, it is really important to really take into consideration and listen to the needs and feedback of the customers.

Ms. Jenny also mentioned that customer complaints are one of the challenges they face. Some of these complaints arise when they install CCTVs that don’t function properly afterward. When we asked her if their location posed any issues, she said it wasn’t a problem because their store is well-placed, favoring good visibility and foot traffic. She also added that they are planning to expand in the future. This just shows that while they face some technical challenges, the business is strategically positioned and growing, with plans for further development.

4. Honyun Computer Store

Through our interview at Honyun Computer Store, we gained insights into how staff interaction and business challenges affect customer experience.

Ms. Shella Mae Tobito, one of the staff members, shared that since they sell surplus items, there are instances when customers complain about the products they purchase. She explained that while their location is advantageous and there aren’t many competitors in the area, they do face challenges with their parking lot. The limited parking space can create inconvenience for customers, potentially affecting their overall experience.

During the entire interview, me and my groupmates felt welcomed and at ease, as the staff were approachable and friendly. Because of this, our interview felt light, and we were not having a hard time asking them questions. This experience highlights how having approachable staff can foster open communication and make interactions more enjoyable for everyone, especially the customer.

5. NWOW Electric Bicycle

During our interview with NWOW Electric Bicycle, we gained insights into both the operational procedures and challenges faced by the business.

The staff that we interviewed shared that customers who want to buy an e-bike must submit requirements, like providing an ID, and some other legal requirements that correspond to having an e-bike. This process helps promote safety and legal use of an e-bike, as the company is focused on responsible and lawful business operations. 

One of the challenges that was mentioned by the staff is the store's location, which does not have enough space for a parking area to accommodate customers who have cars. This problem can make it difficult for customers who drive and can potentially affect the convenience of visiting the store and their overall experience. Addressing this issue could have better accessibility and can improve customer satisfaction.

Whether it is about handling customer complaints or the space of the area, these businesses show how crucial it is to stay adaptable and focused on improving customer experience and satisfaction.

1. Johnny's Auto Parts

Johnny's Auto Parts is a car spare parts seller that is owned by Mr. Johnny Ibala which established in the year 2004. This business is solely owned by Mr. Johnny. It located at Vamenta Boulevard, Cagayan de Oro City. They consist of seven staff and their operating hours from 8:00 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday through Saturday.

For compliance with the legal documents, the business is DTI and BIR registered. It is a DTI registered since it is just owned by Mr. Johnny. They also have barangay clearance and a business permit, ensuring that the business is legally compliant and can legally operate.

2. Royal Glass Supply

Royal Glass Supply was established in the year 2005, owned by Sherwin Lo, and located at Cruz Taal Street Corner, Rizal St. Cagayan de Oro City. They offer glasses, aluminum, and accessories for glasses, and they do home service for installations and also caters walk-in customers. They have a total of 13 staff that will cater the customers, and operating hours from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M, Monday through Saturday. And they get their supplies from Cebu and Manila.

As for their legal documents, the business is a DTI and BIR registered. Since it is a sole proprietorship, it is a BIR registered. Additionally, the business has a business permit and a Notice to Issue Receipt/Invoice, which ensures that the business maintains proper records and gives the customers their proof of transaction. And these are the legal documents for them to be able to operate their business.

3. Tech-Converge I.T. Solutions

Tech-Converge I.T. Solutions offers IT products, repair devices, and doing home services, like the installation of CCTV. It is owned by Ms. Mae Catherine Nadal and established a physical store recently, last year, in 2023, in Room 105 De Leon Bldg. Yacapin-Velez, Cagayan de Oro City. Operating hours are from 8:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M., Monday through Saturday. 

The business has the documents to be able to operate. It is DTI registered, and since it is solely owned by Ms. Mae, it is also a BIR registered. They also have a business permit, sanitary permit, and fire safety inspection certificate, ensuring that the business premises are safe for both the employees and customers. And they also have Notice to Issue Receipt/Invoice, ensuring that the business has proper records and give the customers their proof of transaction.

4. Honyun Computer Store

Honyun Computer Store offers laptops, computer sets, and accessories, and these are surplus items. It is owned by Ms. Cathlea May G. Pontiano and established just this year, in July, and it is located at Brgy. 08 Jr. Borja, Don Apolinar Velez St., Cagayan de Oro City. They have four staff, two salespeople, and two technicians, and they operate from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday through Saturday. And they also shared with us that their supplies are from Manila.

The business is a DTI and BIR registered. Additionally, they also have a barangay clearance, business permit, sanitary permit, and Notice to Issue Receipt/Invoice. These documents and permits are the key for Ms. Cathlea to build and operate this business.

5. NWOW Electric Bicycle

NWOW Electric Bicycle offers E-bikes. It is owned by Ms. Jessica Seda, and the one that is located at J.R. Borja, Capistrano St., Cagayan de Oro City was established in the year 2019. They have six staff, and their operating hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., everyday. 

As for their business to operate and offer their products, NWOW ELectric Bicycle is a DTI registered. It also has barangay clearance, a sanitary permit, and a fire safety inspection certificate. Additionally, they have Notice to Issue Receipt/Invoice to ensure that they have proper records and give the customers their proof of transaction.

Week 3-4 Insights

List of the insights that I gained from the interview:

1. Greens and Sweets

Being able to interview and knowing the story of Ms. Regina about her business, Greens and Sweets, gave us lessons and deeper insights into how business works.

While we were inside the Greens and Sweets, me and my groupmates felt welcomed and relaxed. Ms. Regina made the interview lighter, and she shared with us a lot of her experiences, from which we also learned a lot from her.

She shared with us that the inspiration behind her business was her hobby and passion for cooking during the pandemic. She even watched the whole season of Master Chef. It also helped that during the pandemic, her father was doing hydroponics with lettuce; then they were only selling it in a cup, but then she felt it was boring, so she thought of ways on how to elevate it since she knows how to cook.

We also learned about her marketing strategies back when her business is still starting. She chose Instagram for posting and promoting her product since, for her, Instagram is more aesthetic and it is more suited for her business at that time. Additionally, she said that if you want your business to have more exposure and for the general public to know about it, you can opt to promote it on Facebook.

She also made us feel at ease during the interview, she even said that she can also relate to us as she was also a student back then. As a kind gesture, she gave us their kani roll for free, making it an even more memorable experience.

2. Cuadro Ocho Incorporated

Cuadro Ocho Incorporated shows us new learnings and insights that we gained during our interview with them.

Cuadro Ocho Incorporated shows that a group of friends with a shared business vision can build something significant from humble beginnings. Starting from in Iligan, where they mainly sold lumber, they expanded into a fully hardware and construction materials company with 11 branches across different locations. It also shows that their success did not happen suddenly, they did careful planning, having the right legal documents like SEC registration and BIR certification to ensure their operations were legitimate.

The process of setting up a corporation like Cuadro Ocho Inc. involves a lot of legal documents, from the Articles of Incorporation to General Information Sheets (GIS), all of which are vital in maintaining transparency and legal compliance. These legal documents serve as a foundation and legitimacy, complying with the requirements of having a business.

Another insight that I gained is how they carefully consider the location of their stores. The foot traffic and parking are very important factors for them, especially the nature of their business, where heavy supplies often need to be transported. They clearly understand that choosing the right spot for a branch can make a big difference in customer convenience and sales.

3. FMN Agriculture Supply Inc.

The interview that we did for the FMN Agriculture Supply Inc. showed us the deeper importance of documents and insights about business.

Ms. Tato explained and shared with us the importance of complying with the legal documents and license for their business and also having business in general. Their having an FPA license aside from registering it with SEC and DTI, shows how crucial it is for businesses that are in line with agriculture to ensure compliance for the safety and well-being of their customers and the environment. It also demonstrates that they really ensure their products, like fertilizers and pesticides, meet safety and quality standards before they sell them. 

Having certificates and trainings is also important to this business, as per Ms. Tato. Attending trainings and seminars from the Red Cross and BOSH shows how a business needs to invest in learning and training for their staff. This gives their staff knowledge and preparedness against potential emergencies and hazards. Additionally, their Fire Safety Inspection and Sanitary permit, and their annual renewal for their documents, permits, and licenses indicate how important proper documentation is for businesses. Staying updated with renewals to avoid any legal issues, complying, and maintaining its legitimate business.

4. Color Mix Paint Center

Color Mix Paint Center gave us lessons that we can learn from and insights that we can get from having a business.

Mrs. Cabatud shared to us that one time, she felt that there was much growth that could happen, and so she ventured and established two more branches of Color Mix Paint Center in other locations. Her vision was to increase the customer base and expand her business. However, she had some problems such as the sales problems that hinder the business from sustaining the branches operations.

Therefor, Mrs. Cabutad brought the resolve to shut both branches after a long and hard thinking. It was a disappointment but she did not let disappoint join her as she had learned to deal with disappointments realistically. Instead of letting this be a problem for her business, she decided to concentrate on developing her one branch. In doing so, she was able to cut down costs, and focus more time on delivering outstanding service to her clients at the core business.

Mrs. Cabatud story shows that it is not always a straight upward march for a business and, in some cases, the decision to downsize might just be the best course of action for further growth. Because of her flexibility and willingness to grow from the situation, Color Mix Paint Center can still be continued to be presented as a business.

5. Jay-Q Grains Rice Trading

Jay-Q Grains Rice Trading showed us that despite challenges, you can still continue to provide quality products, and I also gained insights from it.

From the receipt we saw during our interview with her, one of the Philippine Red Cross staff attended Occupational First Aid and Adult Basic Life Support with CPR training. This training ensure that their staff are ready for any emergencies that may occurred even though they are not into medical field. Moreover, Ms. Tagaro pointed out that their business documents must be updated on a yearly basis to ensure they pass legal requirements.

Ms. Tagaro also informed us about the problems of the rice trading business saying that the price level may vary depending on supply and demand. There are other traders who also offer rice within the area and, therefore, a threat to the company through placing pressure on the prices. Nevertheless, the following are the challenges that the firm face with regard to its operation, Jay-Q Grains Rice Trading, continues to operate with a commitment to providing quality rice and ensuring that it complies with all legal requirements.

- Being able to interview and know these businesses, I have learned that sometimes, starting small means you have to get out of your comfort zone and learn how to elevate things and deal with different legal documents for compliance. It is very inspiring to see how dedication, passion, perseverance, and hard work can lead to growth and success.

Week 3-4 of Interviewing Different Businesses

Me and my groupmates, Angel Jean Obsioma, Ian Gariel B. Ramas, and Francen P. Sellote, roam around the city to look for businesses that we can go to and ask the business owner or staff if we can ask a few questions regarding their business, so that we can gain knowledge and in-depth understanding about how business works, and we also asked permission if it is okay to take a picture.

Here is the list of the businesses we interviewed and the key information we gathered for week 3-4.

1. Greens and Sweets

Greens and Sweets was established in the year 2021 when she was still a student, but the physical store was built around May in the year 2023, which is their main branch that is owned by Ms. Regina Jandoc. This business offers healthy foods, like salad, sandwiches, and rolls, and also cookies, which are sweet foods; that is why it is called Greens and Sweets. They also do catering and joined some food bazaars. Their other branch is located at Barra, which just opened recently, in July 2024. Their overall number of staff for both branches is 5.

During the process of starting her business, she initially began selling online, specifically through Instagram. She registered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as she informed us that it is acceptable to register a business with the DTI even if it only operates online without a physical store. She added that she opted for nationwide registration, as she was hoping and dreaming for her business to expand nationally. She also secured her business permit, registered with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and obtained official receipts (OR), and they have a bookkeeper to handle these matters. And she mentioned that having a business location is crucial since it’s required to obtain a business permit.

2. Cuadro Ocho Incorporated

Cuadro Ocho Incorporated was established on August 8, 1988, specializing in retailing and wholesale hardware and construction materials. This business is a corporation that is owned by a group of friends who are business-minded. They started first in Iligan, selling lumber, then eventually expanded into hardware and construction materials. Today, Cuadro Ocho Inc. boasts 11 branches, with the main branch located in Cebu. They have 10 staff only for the Max Y. Suniel Street, Corner Ipil Street branch alone and 300 staff for the entire branches.

The process that they go through to establish the business is to first get proper documents. Since this business is a corporation, they are required to have it SEC registered. Next is the BIR registered so that their business can legally issue official receipts (OR), file taxes, and even avail of tax credits or deductions. Another document is General Information Sheet (GIS), so as a SEC registered corporation, they are required to file GIS to maintain transparency and ensure compliance with the legal regulations. And lastly are the Articles of Incorporation, whose purpose is to outline basic details of the corporation, like its name and purpose, and are filed with the government, and the Bylaws are the set of internal rules as to how the corporation runs, like their meetings and decision-making.

The manager also shared with us that when deciding where to put the physical store, like any other business, they need to think and consider the foot traffic, as it helps assess if how many people will pass by that location or area. Also, think of the parking area, especially that their business can somehow involve the use of a car or a truck for their supplies, and the same goes to their customers.

3. FMN Agricultural Supply Inc.

FMN Agricultural Supply Inc. is a feeds, fertilizers, and pesticides seller. This business is a corporation, so they are SEC registered, and their president is Ms. Nunez F. Concepcion. The brfanch that is in FJJP+6HP, V. Neri St., Cagayan de Oro City, was established on May 18, 2006, and has 5 staff. They have a total of 11 branches, and the main branch is in the Osmeña Extension, Cagayan de Oro City, which is their main supplier as this branch will only distribute their supplies to the other branches. And their warehouse is located in Baloy.

For their business to operate, the supervisor that we interviewed, who is Mrs. Guanita H. Tato, said that they have to register it as a SEC, also to DTI, and business permit. She also added that since they are selling fertilizers and pesticides, they need to have an FPA (Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority) license, as it is to assure that their products meet safety and quality standards set by the government. This license is also to ensure that the fertilizers and pesticides that they are selling are properly registered, tested, and approved to protect the environment and the health of farmers and consumers.

Additionally, they need to obtain a Fire Safety Inspection certificate and a Sanitary permit. They are also required to attend some seminars, like those conducted by the Red Cross and BOSH (Basic Occupational Safety and Health). She also informed us that their documents need to be renewed annually, but as for the FPA, it is every 3 years.

4. Color Mix Paint Center

Color Mix Paint Center is a paint business that is owned by Mrs. Teresita Cabutad and was established in 2012. Her business is DTI-registered since it is a sole proprietorship. The paint center is located at Castro Street, Cagayan de Oro City, where she and her other staff operate. Their operating hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Mrs. Cabutad also mentioned that her supplies come all the way from Manila.

In terms of compliance, she emphasized that her business is not only DTI-registered but also has the necessary permits to operate. This includes registration with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), securing a barangay clearance, and maintaining a Sanitary Permit to ensure they meet health and safety standards. These requirements are to ensure that her business operates and adheres to the regulations.

5. Jay-Q Grains Rice Trading

Jay-Q Grains Rice Trading is a rice business owned by Mr. Garciano Baldelamar. It is located at Castro St., Cagayan de Oro City, and has 2 staff. Their operating hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM every day. Their supplier of rice is from Cotabato, and they also have imported. 

As for their compliance to operate the business, they are DTI and BIR registered. They also have barangay clearance, Sanitary permit, and Business Permit Certificate. And the all around staff that we interviewed, who is Ms. Analya Tagaro, also showed us the official receipt from the Philippine Red Cross, which is where a staff member was a participant for training in Occupational First Aid and Adult Basic Life Support with CPR, which is intended for non-medical personnel. She also mentioned that they also have to renew their documents every year.

Week 1-2 Insights

List of the insights that I gained from the interview:

1. N Jess General Merchandise

Knowing the story of how the N Jess General Merchandise came from, gave me some insights:

First is how a small thing can change to something bigger and be successful. Just like how they were just simply selling nails before, now  they have a bigger and broader range of different hardware materials. They are one of the proofs that even small beginnings can have the potential to lead to greater success if you put effort and strategy into them. 

Second is how they decided to let go as a wholesaler and focused more on the nails and then slowly expanding the range of the materials that they were selling, since it is more in demand. This just shows that there are really things that you need to let go of in order to grow and just learn to adapt based on what the market needs more. Learning and being able to adapt to new things and what people need can get the business into a long-term success.

And lastly, the risk that their family took when they decided to build this business so that her father would not return as an OFW is scary and, at the same time, amazes me because they have that motivation and also trust with their business. Doing business is really a risk, as we do not know if this will be successful or failure.

2. Happy Sip

The journey of the Hasan's sister on their business Happy Sip is inspiring and reflections, and these are my insights;

First is their decision on changing or having a new venture or business, since their first business, which is the ukay-ukayan, is not doing well, shows the important of being able to adapt and do a different business. It also shows that not all business will be successful, and learn how to explore other opportunities.

Second, their acknowledgement about the milk tea, that it is not a need for people but only a want. I agree with how they were able to recognize and understand what their product is to the market. This just shows that it is very important to know what the consumer or people buy and to be realistic about the nature of the product that you will be offering to them. Knowing these things will make you understand more about your consumers and also manage the expectations since there are times where there will be a slow season for it.

Lastly, them knowing that the milk tea is not a necessity and the sales may not be that big, but they are still selling it and continuing their business, shows their fighting spirit and perseverance. Also, having difficulties with the supplies and waiting for a month before having them takes patience and also being strategic with it, like for them, they ask in advance for it before their supply runs out. Despite these challenges that they faced with their business, they are still going and pushing forward.

3. AJ Water Refilling Station

Even though AJ Water Refilling Station is still new and starting, it gave me some insights that can help me understand more about business and also in life.

First is how Mrs. Jamito established the business so that her children will have something left to rely on in the future, which shows the importance of planning for the future for your family. Planning to start a business is not just thinking about its success, but it is also for the future security of providing for the family. It made me realize that some people plan and build a business for their family's future, but there are also others who build business as it is their dream.

Second, with how she acknowledges and thinks carefully that since her business is still new and she is just starting, she only has a few staff members. This shows me that it does not need to be grand or make a huge move to get to success right away. You have to carefully plan and take considerations of what situation you are in, and then slowly build and have a solid foundation.

Lastly, how saving money is one of the first things that you do if you plan to start a business. It is really very important to save money because you really need to be financially prepared, especially with the case of Mrs. Jamito's business, where the materials and equipment require sufficient capital. Before starting a business, you need to consider if you are financially responsible for being able to start it.

4. Jasmine Garden

Hearing, knowing, and also learning of how Jasmine Garden was able to keep going for more than 30 years gave me insights and also somehow knowledge of things that can help the business last for a long time.

First is how Mrs. Dap-og was able to grow and expand her business from selling a small amount and kinds of flowers or plants to now a thriving and also have landscaping business, which shows her passion and patience in growing a business. This is also a reminder that passion and patience are some of the keys to growing a business. Moreover, know ways that can help the business stay going and stay for a long time, and in the case of Mrs. Dap-og, she propagates her plants and then slowly grows and expands them.

Second, how it is also a good decision and move that they are extending their business to landscaping as it is also in line with their garden business. Doing this decision in your business can help it expand and also grow since it not only offers selling different kinds of flowers or plants, but also do landscaping which connects to having broader range of customers who may want or need to buy plants and plan to do landscaping.

Lastly, how she was able to show her passion and love in flowers and plants as she was joining a lot of competitions and displays in festivals. For me, it is also important to show the love and passion that you have, especially in the business that you have, since, for my belief, it somehow resonates with the overall aura of the business and also reflects how you are as an owner and person.

5. Aquarist Fish Shop

The story of how Aquarist Fish Shop first started gave me realizations and insights that can also help me understand the different reasons why business owners start a business.

How they turned personal interest into having or starting a business. This is also one of the reasons why people start businesses and how it can also be a significant role that you align your personal interests into your business. It does not only become your source of income, but it also gives fulfillment and happiness to you as a business owner.

The importance of having and building relationships with the suppliers. She gave us a glimpse of how their relationship is with their supplier, and it shows how they trusted each other and even helped one another in terms of their respective businesses. It is very important that you not only have a reliable and trusted supplier but also help you find connections and communicate with other trusted people that they know that can help your business grow.

- Hearing and knowing the story of their businesses strengthens my beliefs about humble beginnings, effort, strategy, risks, decisions, and even learning how to let go of things serves as a purpose in order to embrace growth and have new opportunities.

Week 1-2 of Interviewing Different Businesses

Here is the list of the businesses we interviewed and the key information we gathered for week 1-2.

1. N Jess General Merchandise

The N Jess General Merchandise is a hardware business that is owned by Ms. Carmela Barton and her father, and was established in the year 2015. It is located in Door 3 Lacar Building, Zone 12 Upper Carmen, CDOC. Before it became hardware, the very first business that they did, with her family, was they were a wholesaler of Coke and beer. Additionally, they were engaged in the sale of nails. But because the nails are more in demand or needed than their coke and beer and the staff member that was assigned to their wholesale business failed to do his/her duty, they focused more on this. They are rolling the money that they got from selling nails to grow their business, but now it is in line with hardware. Their family also wants to build this business so that her father won't go back as an OFW, as it will serve his retirement venture.

Now that their business grows, aside from selling hardware, they also do partner contractors. They also have 17 staff. But she also said that even though their business is now established, there are really months that their business is slow in sales, but still they were able to pay their expenses. 

Then we also asked about how they were able to start or build their business. She answered that they first looked for a place or location as to where to put the business, a location where it can be seen by people, and then look for suppliers.

2. Happy Sip

Happy Sip is a milk tea business owned by two sisters, Rema Hasan and Merlyn Hasan, built on March 5, 2024, in Zone 12 Upper Zayas Carmen, CDOC. Aside from selling milk tea, they also have coffee and snacks. They solely own the business, as they don't have any partnerships, but they franchise it. They also have another business, which is an ukay-ukayan.

They came up with this business since their other business, ukay-ukayan, is not that good in terms of sales, so they did this business to have other income. We also asked the first thing they did to have this business, and Ms. Rema Hasan said that they first contacted someone on Happy Sip as they want to franchise it, as this business has a main store in Manila, and then asked a deal about the supplier. She also added that when they ask for supplies, they usually get those supplies, like around a month, since the supply is from Manila, and the delivery can usually take a month, and that is why they also ask for a supply in advance.

And lastly, she said that there are really times that the sales of their business are not that big since a milk tea is not something that people need on a daily basis, unlike rice that people really needs in their daily lives, as it is just a want and people do not crave for it every day.

3. AJ Water Refilling Station

AJ Water Refilling Station is owned by Mrs. Leonor Jamito and was established on June 28, 2024. It is located in Zone 12-C Uzlai Upper Zayas Carmen, CDOC. Mrs. Jamito shared with us that she put this business up so that her children will have something left or depend on, because we do not know when will be our last time on earth. She also said that there are only a maximum of 3 staff that she has, including her, as they are just starting. She added that you should just keep holding on, as there are really times that there are not that many customers, but there are also times that there are a lot. We also asked her about what she did first to put up this business, she answered that she saved money first, as this kind of business needs to have a large amount of capital because of the materials that are needed in this business.

4. Jasmine Garden

Jasmine Garden is a business owned by Mrs. Amelita Dap-og which was established in the year 1992, and the main garden is located in Gusa, CDOC, which where they are invited by the LGU so that they can help in the beautification of the place, but her and her family is currently residing in Tagoloan. Her business is about the different kinds or variaties of flowers, and also landscapping, which is where her son, Alejandro Dap-og is in-charge.

In the beginning of her business, she and her family, which is also the ones who's with her in managing her business, they only sell small amount of flowers. Additionally, she also said that upon raising her business, she first propagated her plants. And now, she can accepts suppliers of her plants regardless of how big the display would be.

We also asked her as to what is the first thing that she does to established their business, and she said that she looks for a perfect location as to where to placed it.

And she shared to us that their business is mostly invited and participated in several floral diplays such as festivals, just like the Kaamulan. They also joined in different contests and won some prizes, like Best in Flowering, and Best in Bonsai Plant. And in the recent Higalaay festival, she also participated in the display, located in the Gaston Park, and said that for them to join the displays, they must submit their business permit.

5. Aquarist Fish Shop

Aquarist Fish Shop is a business owned by Mrs. Devenia Socorro M. Chua, and their store was built in the year 2010 at Rizal Fernandez Streets, Barangay 1, CDOC, but they were already selling fish in 1993. Their business is not only selling different kinds of fish, but they also have different animals, accessories for aquariums, and fish foods.

They do not have any partnerships; they solely manage their family business. Their store only has 3 staff, which is also just her, her husband, and her son.

We also asked her what are the things that they did to start this business and why did they came up with it, and she answered that the first was to invest and then set up the aquariums since this is where the fish will be placed. She added that they also searched for suppliers, and then along the way, their suppliers will be the ones to contact them to ask if they still have supplies. She also said that they created this business so that they have income, and they chose to sell fish as his husband is fond of different kinds of fish.
