“Dora the Explorer?” He repeated, brows furrowing. “Why would you be watching that on your night off?”

“I just work backstage. I don’t put on any of the outfits or makeup,” Joey explained, “I don’t really fit the Broadway Baby stereotype.” She rolled her eyes. “Me? Sweet? Maybe to an animal. Most people find me volatile and aggressive. Just check my permanent record.or my juvenile records back in Tennessee.”

Jesse nodded, “Ahh, I see. That makes sense. I don’t see you as an on stage type.” He laughed, nodding before his brows furrowed. “You’re... not serious, are you? You’ve been to juvie?”

“I’d kill for that much land. I just wouldn’t wear that costume,” Joey rationalized, as if that was completely normal. She shook her head. “I don’t do costumes and I haven’t even given a second thought to Halloween since I was probably five. Even then I didn’t want to dress up, though. I just wanted to scare kids. I was a bit of a terror.”

Jesse nodded, “I see.” He chuckled, before pursing his lips. “Really? You’re in the theatre industry but you don’t do Halloween or costumes? Theatre people love Halloween and dressing up. They’ll find occasions to do it year-round.” He explained. “You? A terror? That sounds highly unlikely and hard to believe. You’re so sweet.”

“I wouldn’t wear it if someone offered me 100 acres and my own herd of cattle,” Joey insisted, shaking her head at the outfit. Being racy wasn’t her forte. No one had ever taught her how to dress like a girl, so she had grown up in jeans and sweatshirts that were passed down from her father.

Jesse laughed, “Not even all that, eh? I’d do just about anything for that much land.” He shrugged, it seemed like an alright deal to him. “Do you have any plans for Halloween? Maybe a more appropriate costume?”

Joey had the day off and was spending it walking down the streets and peering in store windows. It was hard for her to stay cooped up. With Halloween fast approaching, there were many costumes on display. A particularly racy one of a cow girl had caught her eye, but not in a good way. “People actually buy that?” She spoke to no one in particular.

Cracking his knuckles as he leaned against a telephone pole waiting for his uber to take him home between shows on Sunday, he heard a soft voice beside him. It sounded familiar, so he looked up from his phone screen as he chuckled, looking a the girl Joey pointed out. “Unless she stole it, it appears so.” He laughed, sliding his iPhone into his pocket. “Not your style?” He asked.
