No, god damn, I’m sorry Jesse. It’s me. It’s just… I just. Y’know I don’t believe in regrets. Y’know everything happens for a reason, or, or they just don’t happen at all.

Oh, well, I don’t really… I-I’m not used to talking about the things the frighten me. Heh. I mean, I don’t think– ugh! sounds silly but.. I have no fears. No regrets.
“Truly? Or is that something you tell yourself to make you feel better?”
(He stays quiet for a moment.) “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to.. Analyze. I do that.”
I mean, do you think this is just the beginning of a new society? Will our stories be scratched in the walls of caves? Told to our great great grand children at bedtime?
“Some part of me hopes so. That we can all begin anew, that would be.. A privilege to witness. We just have to survive all this first. And I don’t see the dead letting up so soon.”
“What about you? Does everything.. Frighten you?”
Ohh and he speaks the truth.

“Hopefully the minimum. I think putting a number on it would be a bit macabre. But I can’t imagine outrage is so far away.”
What an elaborate way to say “I care”. Nonetheless, I like your way of thinking. I honestly think we’d actually thrive if people were more concerned about the community as a whole.
(A chuckle) “I’m nothing if not superfluous.”
“I think that time will come. The wound is still fresh, everyone’s just learning how to survive right now. Eventually we’ll figure out that we need each other, that the solo game will take you nowhere.”

“There used to be a higher priority on community. It’s been disintegrating for some time now; before the apocalypse, even. I like to capitalize on it. It takes a village.”
Oh.. umm… y’know, surprisingly it didn’t have much effect on me. I mean, I actually drank myself unconscious, woke up in an alley and the whole thing was over.
“..Oh?”
A thoughtful, awkward pause.
“Well.. I bet the hangover was worse than anything the purgers could have done to you. For that you have my sympathies. Maybe next time, though.. You’d consider drinking in the safety of your own home. Or sharing with me.”

“Quiet.. Thankfully no Purgers. The Mayor couldn’t risk his relationship with Fischer’s Farm, anyway. The only time I’ve ever been so elated to be a farmer. And you?”
Sooomebody needs to get laid… ahem… Mr. Mayor. Just sayin’ all of that bottled up fury could be used in ways much more fun than slitting people’s throats.
“Well.. I certainly doubt he’ll be getting much action any time soon, with this stint.”

You could easily maintain your humanity. Just don’t take part in the purge. But that should be the only one, so don’t fret.
“I wish it was that easy.. I don’t doubt your lot is doing their best. It’s just.. A difficult pill to swallow.”
Investing in farms when the Blight is killing the crops to begin with is pointless. And no one is trained enough to do supply runs. We lost people out there attempting to get food. Why send out more more frequently? It’d be as bad as a purge.
“At least they die with dignity. Not hunted down by their neighbors. People are going to die, Mr. Holman. It’s an unavoidable certainty. The least we can do is maintain our humanity through all this.”
Do you have any real alternatives?
“None that would eliminate blood shed completely; though that would be ideal. “
“Adequate supplies are needed to make the purging obsolete.. If there was more investment in the farms and less in needless establishments like the bar and the book shop, self sufficiency could be an option. More frequent supply runs would herald more supplies, of course. But the more we rely on those, the more likely it is we find ourselves in the exact same situation, and with fewer able bodied workers.”
It’s going to keep us all alive a lot longer.
“I don’t doubt that. But.. That’s quite a steep cost.”
“It’s barbaric. Picking us off like that. Hunting us down like animals. Completely undignified.”
