With homes on hillsides as steep as these, they tend to cluster together outside of a rigid structure, likely due to the natural layout of the land. It makes the town look extra magical, warm & organic instead of modern and plastic. The risk of posting in-progress paintings is that I feel resistant to making big changes to them, but it’s just the nature of painting to require it sometimes. Swipe right for before pics. “Mary Magdalene in the Cave” after Hugues Merle 1868. Mine looks quite a bit different than the original. His brush marks are so soft and beautifully executed, and I tend to build up layers on layers until I get the values I want, and have less restraint. I love the small ochre brushstrokes hiding in her turquoise shawl that help it glow, how her hair falls on the rock under her head and becomes an abstract painting all its own, the turbulent sky and sea above her in the mouth of the cave, the otherwordly glow illuminating her skin. Her expression kept me captivated the whole time, wondering what she was thinking, what she’d seen.
