Final Blog Post
This week’s readings tackled a lot of new technologies, such as facial recognition, touchscreens, the Apple watch, and AR (augmented reality). All of the articles talk about their respective subject, but I noticed a slight similarity of all of the readings – the author’s caution to these new technologies. Each author went through pros and cons of each technology, but they also wrote in detail about how these technologies are changing the way we live day-by-day. Wilmott and Fraser note in their article that, “we want technology to work for us, but we are actually working for it.” This powerful statement resonated with me as I checked my Apple Watch for any new notifications. It’s true, we will naturally be skeptical of change and new technology that comes our way. The way I see it, this technology is coming for us whether we like it or not. We might as well enjoy the benefits of it and stop worrying about the “what ifs.” As Parisi put it, there’s not much we can do to stop the growth of technology.
As I was reading through each of the articles, they constantly reminded me of one of my favorite shows – Black Mirror. I’m sure all of the authors of this week’s readings love Black Mirror, as it’s all about technology and the sinister paths it could potentially take in the future. I was particularly reminded of the episode, “Nosedive,” which features all four of the technology’s talked about in this week’s readings. This episode focuses on how obsessed society is with technology and how much society has changed to adjust. Black Mirror features technology like implanted chips, AR, and tons of other advanced technology that honestly doesn’t seem very far off. It can all be very daunting, but you begin to realize that technology is heading in this direction of advancement. New technology is being created everyday by major tech companies, and the government is also latching onto it.
Becoming aware of how technology works, especially social media, has helped me be more aware of how often I’m on my device verses how often I want to be on my device. Learning about new media in this course has helped, in my opinion, give me more control of my information, my time, and my money. Unplugging can be liberating, but not realistic for how fast-paced our society is now. The readings for this week made me realize how far humans are able to take technology and the potential of what it can become. Technology can be good or evil, depending at the perspective you take on it. I choose to focus on the good, and focus more on the positives that technology continues to bring into my life.
I’m looking forward to discussing AR and touchscreens in class since these are a couple of topics we haven’t yet discussed in detail. I’m curious to hear other people’s takes on the rapid pace technology is taking and how we, as a society, will adjust to it in the future.
