Hi all, I made another blog for Rick and Morty again because I deleted my old one (dummy-morty). I've been in the fandom under different usernames across different platforms since 2017. Come say hi if we used to know each other!

A few relevant things:

I was originally planning for this to be a 2-page comic but it got kinda heavy so I might end up making it a full doujin instead. Bummer it's gonna take longer because of my other responsibilities... sigh. The Jessticia comic idea is also getting shelved for now. At least until I can think of a more interesting scenario to put them in.

I saw some other posts related to this on Twitter, but my account on there is private and not really meant for fandom interaction, so I'm just gonna say my piece here. Rick literally groomed Morty and the entire Smith family into accepting and overlooking his abuse. I don't know if this is a controversial take on Tumblr or not. It's what I see on the screen and this is coming from someone who hates Rickorty as a ship.

I had a hard time figuring out how to word this thought previously, because it seems if you use the word "grooming" instead of "manipulation", people will accuse you of making things up, or use some other excuse to minimize Rick's wrongdoing. Because anyone who hears the word "grooming" assumes that it MUST mean that someone in the equation is being accused of sexual abuse and therefore pedophilia (nevermind the fact that sexual attraction does not need to be present in order for sexual abuse to take place), when in reality it just describes using a power imbalance to one's advantage in order to ease a more vulnerable person into allowing the exploitation of themselves and others, whether it be financial, emotional, or sexual. A definition that can help victims of all kinds of abuse more accurately identify what happened to them, and understand why their family/social circles failed to prevent it.

The best example I can think of for nonsexual grooming is the relationship between Azula and her father in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The fact that Azula was groomed by Ozai into acting the way she did is common knowledge in that fandom, and often referenced when breaking down Azula's motivations and insecurities. It's unfortunate that regular fans of Rick and Morty have gotten so afraid of being mistaken for Rickorty shippers that they can't have frank discussions about these things without that worry looming over them.

Also, this isn't me policing Rick fans in any way! He's an interesting character and I like him for it too. I'm only pointing out that a lot of his manipulative actions towards Morty and the family would probably be considered some form of grooming in real life because I feel like ignoring it means missing out on good character analysis. Morty is a relatable character in many ways but this is the main reason I latched onto him so hard as another victim of grooming when I was in my early teens. I can't help but wonder how many other non-Rickortys feel the same and are just afraid to say it.

I thought about it a little more, and to be honest, I wouldn't really say Rick's abuse is completely nonsexual either, considering the situations we've seen him put Morty in: the megaseed scene, having Morty get used to being naked on adventures sometimes, the offscreen mermaid stuff in Ricklantis Mixup, "Rick and Morty P***y Pounders" etc.

I saw some proshippers on Twitter bring this up in a more serious context, and I don't like to agree with them, but they were right. Abusers sometimes incorporate sexual elements into their grooming as a way of building trust and attachment between themselves and victims, even if sex isn't the main goal. Let's say we remove Mr. Jellybean, Planetina and all the other adult women from the equation. Morty would technically still be a victim of sexual abuse if we held him to IRL standards, despite the show not framing it that way. Again: sexual attraction does not have to be present in order for sexual abuse to take place.

I left this out of the initial post to avoid flashbanging people right off the bat (I'm just trying to open up the discussion on Tumblr lol), but I want to know other people's thoughts, so feel free to jump in if you have anything to add.

hi im on my quest to be nicer to people !! no need to respond or anything I just want you to read this :) + I know it's kinda weird sending things like this out of the blue lol so yeah. anyway I think you're one of the most well spoken people posting in the fandom and it's been so refreshing seeing someone who tackles complex topics with nuance instead of just reacting instinctually!! I think I'm actually a part of the problem, so reading posts like yours really helps ground me and I can't thank you enough for that. Not to mention how you're genuinely one of the funniest people here honestly I think a huge chunk of my vocabulary can be traced back to something you posted lmao (re: that one grandpa thats got to go lord take him he's ready). Also your art is phenomenal !!! I really really like how you use colours and I look up to your linework as something to work towards as I get better at art :)) theres so much fluidity to the way you draw and I really really admire that. huzzah!!!

That's a relief to hear LOL I feel like I talk in circles a lot. It's hard not to since Tumblr doesn't have as strict of a character limit as Twitter does (if it has a limit, even?)

Being nicer is a good goal to have... I've been trying to be more considerate and less combative when disagreeing with people since everybody's got certain difficult life circumstances that might be shaping their worldview. I used to get swept up in discourse a lot when I was younger and it killed my desire to interact with people in fandoms until a few months ago... these days if I'm reading or watching something that upsets me, I have to stop and ask myself 1) exactly what aspect of it is making me feel that way, 2) why it's making me feel that way, and 3) if arguing with people about it will actually help me get rid of that feeling. It's a tedious thought process but it definitely helps with reducing stress. Pick your battles etc etc

Also, thanks! I like your art too!! Eyecatching compositions are definitely your strong point!! ^^

I enjoyed "Field of Dreams," but I don't think the crew marketed it very well. I remember an advance review claimed that Morty would explore what his life would be like without Rick's destructive influence, but that's...not what that episode is about at all, to be honest. The recent Reddit AMA also implied that Morty would have significant character development, but that didn't really happen, either.

I think the writers made some gutsy decisions with that episode, and I can respect that, but I also wish the marketing didn't make it seem like an epic showdown where Morty finally got fed up and told his family to get their act together. It was just more trauma for him.

It worth of saying that while Morty in part pushed and enabled Basic/Sober Rick's behaviour while he was working in create a portal gun, all what happens falls under Basic/Sober Rick's responsibility- he is the one who choose to start drinking again, to get obsessed with portal travel to the point he neglected his wife, to start treating Morty in questionable ways.

Yes, Morty did not help but he isn't exactly responsible for how Basic/Sober Rick decided to act while working on the portal travel gun.
