SAVE MAHAHUAL
Dearest Tumblr community, there is an important matter to discuss. I am writing this in English because, despite it being an issue happening in Mexico, I believe it's something that needs to be made known all around the world. Because we all should be worried about the destruction of the few green spaces we have left. I'm doing this hoping that you can help pressure Royal Caribbean into stop this.
What you're going to read next are not my words, I'm merely translating fron a change.org page, I know it's a bit long but please read it, and spread the información.
The Cause
Mahahual is one of the last places where the jungle meets the sea, the reefs still thrive, and sea turtles return each year to lay their eggs.
Today, a massive project led by the multinational Royal Caribbean, called "Perfect Day Mexico," threatens the very existence of Mahahual, a coastal town in southeastern Mexico, bordering the second largest coral reef in the world.
This project envisions the construction of a 90-hectare water park on a protected mangrove area, a natural barrier essential for marine life, ecological balance… and our future.
This project directly threatens:
- Our rights of access to and use of the sea, the beaches, and the mangroves,
- Our local identity, our way of life, our freedom to live here,
- And above all, the survival of unique and threatened ecosystems: three species of sea turtles, resident manatees, living mangroves, and the second largest coral reef in the world.
We have already witnessed their environmental mismanagement: videos circulate showing the dumping of wastewater into the mangroves adjacent to their facilities. And today, it's not just a cruise ship pier, but a giant water park.
📍 This project is not an isolated case. In CocoCay (Bahamas), an identical Royal Caribbean project has already resulted in:
- The exclusion of local communities from their coastline, with the privatization of coastal areas that were previously freely accessible,
- The massive destruction of biodiversity through the removal of mangroves and the pollution of the reef, causing a drastic reduction in marine life,
- The almost exclusive enrichment of the multinational corporation.
Royal Caribbean plans to receive up to 20,000 tourists per day:
with them, tons of chemical sunscreen, plastic waste, mega-cruise ships that pollute the water, and an absurd consumption of fresh water in a region already suffering from water stress.
All of this is destroying mangroves and the still-living coastline, without a serious environmental impact study, and dispossessing local communities of their own territories, as has already happened elsewhere.
Mahahual is not an amusement park.
It is a fishing village inhabited by local communities who live facing the sea.
One of the last free bastions in the Mexican Caribbean, where Playa del Carmen and Tulum have already succumbed to the logic of profit.
We are not opposed to development or tourism.
But we believe in a model based on sustainability, respect for ecosystems, and justice for local communities.
A model that reinforces what makes Mahahual valuable, instead of replacing it.
The authorities are not obligated to consult the local population, and current environmental control mechanisms are too weak to guarantee Mahahual's protection.
📝 What we demand for Mahahual:
The immediate cancellation of the “A Perfect Day Mexico” project as currently planned,
A rigorous, independent, and public environmental impact assessment,
Recognition of the right of local communities to decide their future and protect their territory,
The opening of a national debate on the tourism model we want for Mexico.
Because defending Mahahual is defending nature, human rights, and the future of our oceans.
P.S. Mahahual needs you to sustain the legal defense.
If you would like to support us, you can donate to cover the essential costs of the process (lawyers, technical analyses, and court proceedings). All money is used exclusively for Mahahual's legal defense.

Update
SEMARNAT (the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) will not approve Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day project. We still need to see if they make it official and put it in writing, but we succeeded.
We also need to keep an eye on Royal Caribbean, they won't desist so easily. So please don't suport this company, they already did this in the Bahamas, they destroyed a large percent of their nature.
Thank you all for your support, for sharing and speaking out. Thanks to the visibility we gave this issue, we were able to stop this ecocide.
I also ask for your support again regarding other similar situations happening in Mexico, such as in Loreto, Baja California, where blue whales usually go in winter to give birth. The government made changes to the port's regulations, allowing cruise ships and other vessels to enter. If these ships enter, they could cause many whales to die or stop coming to Loreto. If you would like more information, I've included links where you can sign the petitions and learn more about each situation.
We need your help to spread the word.
