Okay!! here it is!! my first fic in y e ars I’m sorry if it seems a bit all over the place and not good. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated btw!! :D
Fusion. Some say it is an art form, Logan would have considered it an extremely calculated and intricate process before he had done it himself. He had found fusion was a process much simpler and yet much more complicated than both opinions, however implausible that may seem. The first time he had fused with the three other tourmaline gems, it was nothing like he had expected. They were afraid yet comforted, a mess but well put together, they felt euphoric and scared and everything in between. Together they felt complete.
Fusing one on one however was another experience altogether. With Patton, Logan’s feelings were amplified, but with his mindfulness the fusion was quite well balanced. With Roman, their often opposing views and courses of action they tended to take caused the fusion to be slightly unstable, making unpurposeful falling apart a frustratingly common occurrence, however, coming to compromises was becoming easier in certain situations. Although he’d never admit it out loud, Logan enjoyed fusing with the light blue and red gems, of course, because of the challenges of learning that came with it. Definitely not because it was fun. Definitely.
There was one tourmaline gem Logan had never fused solely with before, Virgil. Mysterious, stubborn Virgil hadn’t shown much interest in fusion except when the four came together to become Thomas. Even Patton, whom Virgil seemed to be closest to, had been turned down by Virgil. Logan couldn’t explain it, his understanding was that Virgil felt safe as a fusion when they all became Thomas, so then why didn’t he want to fuse individually? Virgil was a total enigma to Logan, but he respected his boundaries nonetheless, not wanting to force the purple pigmented gem into anything or make him uncomfortable.
It was a cloudless night and Logan was out stargazing again. Yes, the activity may be unproductive, why stare at a sky of stars that hardly changes? Why continue to study the humans star charts when you’ve been staring up at the same sky for millennia? Well Logan always believed keeping up to date with what humans knew of space was fascinating, watching as the primitive race began advancing and learning more and more about the cosmos, watching them guess and conspire and dream about what may be out there. And, well, there was no harm in revising his knowledge of constellations, how interesting and incredible that even some of the most ancient races of human could discern images from small lights in the sky.
Logan’s train of thought was interrupted by the warp pad behind him activating. He turned from his notes to see Virgil, eyes to the ground and large earphones around his head, he was clutching some form of notepad. Logan watched the purple gem as he bobbed his head to whatever was thumping through his headphones and stepped off the warp pad, but he quickly stopped in his tracks and placed his headphones around his neck as he spotted the bespectacled gem that stood before him with a blank expression that Virgil could tell a billion metaphorical cogs were turning behind, analysing every inch of Virgil as his trained eyes scanned up and down.
“Good evening, Virgil,” Logan finally broke the silence, “I must say I was not expecting anyone out here tonight.”
“Oh, uh, I can go, sorry- uh, you- I’ll just-“ Virgil’s spoke quickly, stumbling over his sentence and his feet as he stepped back towards the warp pad.
“Nonsense, you can stay.” Virgil stopped as he was about to activate the warp pad and looked down at Logan, apprehensive eyebrows raised. “I assure you, you won’t bother me in the slightest. Come on, I’ll clear some space on here for you.” Logan continued and turned to move half of his belongings to one side of the foldable table he had brought.
Not hearing any movement behind him, Logan turned, a quizzical eyebrow raised, silently questioning if the other intended to stay.
Virgil visibly tensed again under Logan’s gaze. “Oh! Yeah, okay- right-” he stammered, slowly stepping off the warp pad and making his way to the table, “Woah..” Logan watched as a slight look of wonder overtook the nervousness on Virgil’s face as he stared at the piles of books and charts spread across the table.
“Where’d you get these?” Virgil questioned, setting his notebook down on the cleared side of the table and picking up and unfolding one of the charts.
“The library.” Logan leaned over to help Virgil lay the paper down neatly, not wanting it to crease.
“You have a library card?”
“No, but Valerie allows me to borrow these every once in a while, she knows I’m trustworthy enough to return them.”
“What’s with all these lines? Is this one of those connect the dots things Patton does?”
Logan rolled his eyes, “No, these are constellations.” he said with a slight smile in his voice. “It is believed ancient humans thought the positions of the stars were their God’s way of telling them stories. It only seems natural that humans would notice patterns and give them names, for example,” Logan motioned to a group of stars on the chart, “this is Canis Major, or, The Great Dog.”
“It’s some dots and lines.” Virgil said flatly, “There’s no dogs anywhere on this.”
“Indeed, there are no literal drawings of a canine in the sky, however humans are well known for their imaginations. Look.” Logan’s gem began to glow, “They saw that these two sets looked like legs, and these two connected to make somewhat of a body, and these: the tail and head.”
As Logan described what each star represented, the light from his gem traced around the dots on the page and suddenly Virgil was looking at a small dog drawn in blue light on the page.
“Once,” Logan continued, “before maps of any sorts, humans would use the stars to help with navigation, much like they do on-” Logan took a breath, “when we were travelling through uncharted territory. Without calendars, early humans used stars as an indication of when to begin planting seeds and when to harvest, the constellations made the patterns easier to remember and-”
Virgil looked up from the dog on the page at Logan’s sudden silence “Apologies, I’m rambling again aren’t I?” The blue gem adjusted his visor and cleared his throat, letting the dog disappear from the page.
“No!- um I mean, no- I, uh.” Virgil smacked himself internally, he was never good at reassurance, that was Patton’s deal. He took a deep breath and clenched the sleeves of his hoodie, “I meant.. I- can you show me more?”
Logan seemed taken aback but a look of delight flashed across his face before straightening himself out and clearing his throat. “If- If you wish! Yes, of course! What would you like me to show you?” he spoke quickly as he shuffled through the borrowed charts and books.
“How about you show me what the humans saw in the stars, y’know like the dog.” Virgil gave a small smile as he saw the excitement Logan was trying to suppress.
“Okay, well I suppose the star signs would be a good place to start.” he filtered through the pile of charts and unfolded one. “Tonight you can actually see Sagittarius up there, The Archer, it is depicted as a mythical creature known as a centaur, it’s quite odd.. a horse with a humans torso where the horses head would be, I will never understand-” Logan continued on his ramble and Virgil listened intently, occasionally zoning out but he felt like he caught the important stuff.
They weren’t sure when they ended up sitting on the grass, but before long they had ditched the charts for the real night sky, Logan pointing to constellations he had mentioned and Virgil had grabbed his notebook and had begun doodling what he thought each creature looked like from Logan’s descriptions.
Not long after, the two had opted to sit in comfortable silence next to each other. Logan had picked up a book from the table and sat crossed legged with Virgil sitting, hugging his knees close to his chest and his headphones once again around his head, next to him.
Not putting much thought into the action, forgetting he was with Logan and not Patton, Virgil leant over and rested his head on Logan’s shoulder.
Flash.
He found himself toppling over, dropping his book and headphones slipping off as he reached out to stop himself faceplanting into the grass-
Wait. Virgil hadn’t been holding a book, Logan hadn’t had headphones on. His eyes widened as the fusion looked down at the now deep violet complexion of his hands.
“I didn’t mean-! No, no, Virgil it’s fine- I’m so sorry I didn’t think this would happen! I- Virgil.” The stuttering fusion stopped at his own soft but stern voice, “It is completely alright, unless you are uncomfortable, I have no objection to being fused with you.” The fusion placed a hand on his right bicep in one parts attempt to comfort the other.
The fusion took a deep breath.
“No, I think… I think you’re good, we’re good…”
He sat in silence for a few seconds before a small smile spread on his face, followed by a small laugh that passed his lips. The fusion lightly giggled and lay back with a sigh.
“I’m doing… great.”
post-fusion contemplating
im gonna cry
