~Destiny Woven in Gold and Silver~

Summary: Entrusted a mission by a tiny pegasus named Helios, Naru reluctantly becomes a sailor-suited warrior to battle an evil force from the distant past, fights with the help of her mysterious blonde pigtailed ally, and tries to get along with her fellow Sailor Soldiers. But that shifty cat Luna doesn't seem to trust her and Helios seems to be wary of Luna and her Soldiers as well. As one could guess from the fact that Helios is helping Naru, this fic is a Sailor Earth AU rewrite.

Q: Why does this fic exist when Mamoru is the canon guardian of Earth? A.1: Though there are manga influences, this fic is 90s anime based and as we all know, the original anime heavily downplayed Mamoru's role as Earth's representative guardian so making a Sailor Earth for a role swap AU in the original anime's setting couldn't hurt. A.2: Because Mamoru is just so damn Sun-coded* in the manga, even though him being Earth's guardian is undisputed, I have a certain headcanon about him that has taken root in my mind as of late and I can't help but explore the idea of him as a guardian with powers from a celestial body that differs from the one he's a royal of (like Chibiusa, who is a Princess of Earth, but a guardian with powers of the Moon). *(Tuxedo Mask's and King Endymion's medallions resembling suns, his guardian priest being named after the Sun god, Nehellenia referring to him as the Prince of Earth, "protected by the Sun", his zodiac's ruling celestial body being the Sun with everyone else's being the celestial bodies they represent as Sailor Guardians in canon, Mamoru having healing powers and prophetic visions and the Greek god Apollo being the god of healing and oracles.)

A.3: This is not only an AU (Alternate Universe) fic, but a self-indulgent one since I do like these classic tropes that explore the "what ifs" of the series and how certain characters would act if they had different roles than they did in canon.

Q: Why have Naru be the Sailor Earth of the fic instead of literally anyone else or an OC? A: Because I mourn the lost potential Naru had a character who's importance in the narrative of the story (in both the manga and the anime) decreased as it went on. The fact that she was implied in the Black Moon arc and in Sailor Moon R to know Usagi, her best friend, was Sailor Moon, but nothing was ever done with that, has bothered me for a while. She deserves to have more done with her, even if it's only done in fanfics.

These two panels, from Act 2 and Act 16 respectively, got me thinking. Because if Naru's mom and Ami's dad both have memberships to the same sports club which their daughters take advantage of, then Naru and Ami honestly should have met each other before the story started. Naru could've befriended Ami before Usagi did or at the very least, have known a bit about her in contrast to that scene in Act 2 where she acts like she's never heard of her before.

But the idea of Naru and Ami becoming friends without Usagi's involvement is so funny if you know they had beef with each other in the live action series because both were jealous of the other's bond with Usagi.

I’ve always liked how they gave Chibi Moon and Tuxedo Mask a joint attack. Makes me wish the others got some too (aside from Sailor Planet Attack). I can't stop thinking about these potential joint attacks: Mercury's water + Venus' light = rainbow attack (RIP to Rainbow Moon Heartache) Mercury's water + Mars' fire = steam attack Mercury's water + Jupiter's lightning = electrified water attack Mars' fire + Venus' light = explosion attack Jupiter's oak leaves and lightning + Mars' fire = forest fire/fire storm attack Jupiter's lightning + Uranus' wind + Neptune's sea water = hurricane attack (never let these three be on the same team)

When a Sailor Guardian comes of adult age and gives birth to a child, she loses the ability to transform, even if she still wields considerable power, because her Sailor Crystal would see the child as its successor.

This is why Queen Serenity did not transform into a Sailor Guardian when the people of Earth invaded the Moon Kingdom or even earlier when Nehelenia crashed the baby Princess Serenity's christening.

It is also the reason why Neo-Queen Serenity "lost her power as a Guardian" upon becoming queen and giving birth to Chibiusa. Even though Chibiusa would end up having a Sailor Crystal that is separate from the one her mother wields, the Silver Crystal still considered her as someone who could wield it because she was a direct blood descendant of its predecessor.

In the ancient past, the Sailor Quartet were sisters from a noble family from the Golden Kingdom. They presented themselves to Prince Endymion to be potential guardians for him, but since he already had the Shitennou, he refused, but told them they could be the protectors of any of his future children. When Metalia rose to power and the Earth was falling to darkness, the girls sealed themselves into their Sailor Crystals, the Amazon Stones, to survive and await the day when they would fulfill their purpose to protect Endymion's future child.

Helios and the two Maenads were the only sentient people in Elysion after the Dead Moon Circus struck, but there were other priests and priestesses present.

Nehellenia's curse turned Helios into a pegasus and although the two Maenads were able to protect themselves by encasing themselves in crystal, the other priests and priestesses were turned into inanimate objects, effectively dying. They were given rebirth when the seal on the Golden Crystal was broken and continue to help Helios protect Elysion.

Chibiusa's Silver Crystal is tied to a celestial body that is related to, but different from the Earth's Moon.

It is tied to an asteroid that was formed from chunks broken off from the Earth's Moon and, every couple of decades, becomes captured by Earth's gravitational field where it temporarily acts as the Earth's second mini Moon. Because it comes from the same source, that asteroid's Sailor Crystal is near-identical to the Earth!Moon's Silver Crystal, but is distinct enough that when it evolved, it changed into something more unique, the Pink Moon Crystal.

In contrast to Princess Serenity who was an only child, Prince Endymion had numerous siblings and a family as fertile as the Earth. When his parents died, Endymion ruled as regent until he could be properly coronated as king, but Metalia's rising and the attack on the Moon prevented that from happening.

Just as there is the being Chaos, a Guardian Chaos, and a Chaos Crystal, there is a being named Cosmos to go with Guardian Cosmos and the Cosmos Crystal.

When Guardian Cosmos said Queen Serenity had visited the Galaxy Cauldron and held "the empty shell of a star to her breast", what the queen had done was leave with what would allow her to give birth to an incarnation of Cosmos who would become Princess Serenity.

Much like how Chaos would be reborn as Sailor Chaos, Cosmos would be reborn as Sailor Cosmos. She sought shelter with Usagi in the past and comforted her because the latter was a piece of her. Sailor Cosmos was the "future Sailor Moon" in the sense that she would become the beacon of hope, love, and justice in the future that her incarnation Sailor Moon was in the past.

One thing I will forever hold against the Sailor Moon manga is how Makoto told Asanuma her (and the others') identity as a Sailor Soldier in the Black Moon arc, but Usagi never told Naru, her best friend, that she was Sailor Moon even though she had suspected something going on with Usagi and wanted to do her best to help her.

COME ON, MAN Sure, Usagi and Naru stayed friends and are seen hanging out together all throughout the manga into the Stars arc and the short stories, but put more respect on Naru's name!

You know. For all the weird stuff the 90s anime did I think the worst offender is Nephrite and Naru.

I just get so uncomfortable rewatching the episodes with those two. I would have much rather preferred a platonic relationship for them. Not the weird romance they did. And like it was only a thing because Naru found Nephrite hot. Thats it. Thats all it was based on. And Nephrite using a child's naive feelings for him for his own means was disturbing. I don't know how so many people find them a good ship.

I struggle a lot to place the ages of the Shitennou but I think if I were to give them an age range it would be 18-25 with Jadeite being the youngest and Kunzite the oldest. I always imagine Mamoru being at least 2 years younger than the youngest of the four of them. And if those ages are in any way accurate then yea. Naru x Nephrite is easily the most problematic plot line that 90s pulled.

Its also why I'm not completely sold on senshixshitennou in general. Cuz the guys look so much older.

I dunno. I'm just rewatching season 1 and I got to Nephrite's episodes and geez they start that Naru stuff the minute he's in action. I dunno why but I thought there was at least one episode before she meets him.

I feel like Naru never gets enough credit

A character I’ve come to appreciate a lot in the past few months is Naru Osaka. Not only is she Usagi’s only non-Senshi friend, she’s just a great person and friend in general. I especially love how she continues to support Usagi despite Usagi’s growing distance and continues to treasure their friendship. This is especially evident in the R arc.

Here is this scene’s manga counterpart (I’ve only included the important panels, however). It’s the Kodansha translation and is read from right to left.

I think that Usagi and Naru’s friendship is just as beautiful as Usagi’s friendships with the Senshi, and it’s really a shame that Naru was phased out more and more with each passing arc. Naru knows that Usagi is destined for something much greater than she can imagine. She may even know that Usagi is Sailor Moon (in PGSM, Naru outright knows this; it’s only implied in the anime and manga).

But Naru also knows that, for whatever reason, Usagi can’t tell her what’s going on, and that’s okay. If Usagi is sad, Naru will comfort her. If Usagi needs to do something fun to distract her from her troubles, Naru will take her to see a movie or go shopping. And if Usagi ever decides to include Naru in her secret world, Naru will be ready.
