lily:
Ā Ā They found themselves staring at James for a while as he spoke about breakfast, they didnāt knew when she started appreciating these small gestures he did ; maybe, because nobody really asks them about how they are as much as he does.Ā ā That I canāt promise, but Iāll try.ā they spoke after shaking their head out of the small transe- after all sometimes she couldnāt get herself to eat.ā Iām sure that is just because the books arenāt as light as a Quaffle, but theyāre less hurtful.ā
Ā Lily thought sheād bother him for a second when she complained about something for the first time, but she didnāt- she reckoned he had just a hard time figuring what to say. And wasnāt he right about that- they never told anyone about their motherās death and somehow she considered telling Ā about it to James. He had earned that trust from her.Ā ā Itās nothing bigā¦itās just that I unexpectedly lost a very close family member and wellā¦letās just say that I miss that person everyday and it affected my relationship with pretty much everyone else . Not that they were perfect before, butā¦my summer wasnāt the best. How was yours?ā they shrugged their shoulders, moving their eyes from him to the books with a sigh. It was still a little vague, but it was more than nothing. Turning their head back to him, she laughed.Ā ā Before dinner Iām going to get some of these back thenā¦like, most of them.ā
āEvans, if I need to begin waking up at the crack of dawn to sit on this very armchair every morning with a cup of tea and a bit of fruit for you, I will,ā James interjected after they made him such a shaky promise. āWe can eat together.ā He looked at them with loving concern in his eyes.Ā āDonāt worry, I would never try and convince you to eat a three course meal so early in the morning. Just a little something for your stomach, thatās all,ā he reassured as he shifted so he could wrap his arm around their shoulders. He closed his eyes and smiled to himself, the expression only broadening as they compared the books to a Quaffle.Ā āYouāre right about that.Ā āCept those books did hurt my pride some, so they have that against them. I can do no wrong with a Quaffle.ā James listened to them as they spoke about their summer, feeling guiltier than ever that heād been too wrapped up in causing trouble around Godricās Hollow and London with Sirius to write. His friend needed him to raise his spirits, but it seemed Lily could have done with some of his charm too.Ā āIām sorry for your loss,ā he said quietly. He wasnāt smiling anymore. He turned his body so he could give them a proper embrace, holding them close to his chest as he stroked their back. Coming from a small family, death was something that James hadnāt really been directly acquainted with, but he understood loss.Ā āYouāve always got me to care for you. If you ever need a place to stay outside of Hogwarts, Iām here, okay ?ā He shook his head when he was asked about his own summer. He wasnāt going to brag and admit he had the greatest break of his life, so he kept his answer vague. āIt was nice. Spent it with Sirius and the lads came to visit regularly so I was never lonely. I missed you, though.ā
