“hunting?” she didn’t want her brother hunting. it was why she tried to keep him from everything - not that it did any good, vampires seemed to gravitate towards their family. besides, she’d spent two years around a vampire hunted by everyone, so she couldn’t exactly judge. “i’ve never heard of anything like that. an urge to do what?”

“yeah.  when you left, i didn’t really know what to do.  i mean i finished school.  and you know, i tried college.  it wasn’t for me.”  jeremy shrugged.  it’s not like any of this was news.  maybe he’d skimped on the details about hunting, but he was sure this wasn’t the first time he was telling her.  maybe.  “i asked alaric to send me some leads, so.”  he almost reassured her that he wasn’t gonna try anything with damon, but jer wasn’t sure he could make that promise.  sue him.  “it’s this urge to kill vampires?”  he sighed, looking away so he wouldn’t have to see her reaction.  “and i think it has something to do with the tattoo.  i don’t know.”  he also neglected to mention he was silencing that urge by getting fucked up.  baby steps.

“i don’t see anything, jer,” she told him. “we’ll figure it out, though. you’re not crazy, right? the gilberts have survived too long to go crazy. supernatural, then. we’ll figure it out.” she repeated. it seemed to be another of their mottos. we’ll figure it out. their lives were one crisis after another, always trying to figure out some problem. she placed a hand on his arm, lowering it so she could see his face. “don’t worry, we have a lot of knowledge in this place. is it just… your arm?”

“right,”  he agreed, though he hardly believed it himself.  maybe after all this time he had gone crazy.  jeremy swallowed the lump in his throat.  “it’s this, uh, weird symbol on my hand.  and then it starts kinda crawling up my arm, but it stops about here.”  he pointed just a bit above his wrist.  “it — ”  he stopped for a second.  he didn’t want her to freak out anymore, but jeremy wasn’t sure it was a good idea to keep secrets.  “it showed up while i was hunting?  like i killed a vampire and it appeared and now it’s like this — this urge or something.”

“the devil’s spawn lives.” hope grin a bit, though if he was a hunter, he was meant to be a threat to her family. she hoped not. she needed friends badly. “what about you? your dad infamous? i mean where else do you get being a hunter from?”

“it’s complicated?”  although he was pretty sure that excuse didn’t belong in this conversation.  “my parents died when i was younger. my aunt was taking care of us, and then alaric came into our lives.  he taught me how to hunt, actually.”  and now i have an insatiable urge to kill all vampires.  jeremy was pretty sure that was best kept under wraps for now.

hope had grown tired of explaining her sudden arrival to this new world, so the alternative would be to shrug as if it was no big deal. “things happen, kids rise from the dead, just a regular friday.”

jeremy wished he’d lived a normal enough life to disagree, but the gilbert ring on his hand was weighing heavily.  a reminder that sometimes, kids did happen to rise from the dead.  more than once.  “yeah, i guess so.  fuck.  so — you’re klaus’s daughter?  really?  shit.”

jeremy scoffed.  probably not the best reaction, but.  it kept him from saying any of the less-than-kind things that came to mind.  “no shit.”  wait a minute.  “i thought his kid died.  like, isn’t that what set him off or whatever?  that’s what i heard, at least."

“i guess some people think it could help.” the brunette comments when she steps next to the unfamiliar face. she places a curl behind her ear and brings her gaze to the male. “i’m guessing you’re human or a witch? or at least someone who doesn’t fight much.” she gives a gentle smile, wanting to lighten his mood.

“i guess i’m not some people, then,”  he retorted, realizing after a couple seconds how dumb that sounded.  “i’ve spent a while training, i mean.  uh, human.”  if he sounded unsure, it was because he was.  as far as he knew he was human, but the tattoo and the wanting to kill vampires more than usual was making him begin to question it.  “what about you?”

“it just appeared . . . ”  jer trailed off as he realized what elena was saying.  “you don’t — you don’t see it?”  he glanced down at his arm.  was she blind?  what was going on?  “it’s right there.”  he held up his hand, inches from her face.  the weird symbol on the back of his band, beginning to form onto his arm.  “elena?”

“you telling me not to worry, only makes me worry more.” how many times had she told him not to worry about her? “what’d you come across?”

“shit, you’re right.”  despite himself, he couldn’t help but crack a bit of a smile at that.  ‘don’t worry’ was practically a catchphrase for the two of them.  and it wasn’t like they ever listened when the other said it.  jeremy contemplated weaving an elaborate lie, but he wasn’t convinced he was sober enough to follow through or remember it later on.  reluctantly, he settled for the truth and rolled up his sleeve, letting her take a look at the tattoo that had appeared overnight a couple months prior.  “i don’t know what it is.”

it has become a hobby of sneaking into the resistance headquarters. he overhears the male and laughs, “right? it’s like they think the vampires aren’t going to snap your neck in a second.” honesty was the best policy and he was beginning to get good at playing the devil’s advocate. “or yank your heart from out of your chest.”

jeremy tensed up when he saw stefan.  “what the fuck are you doing here?”  maybe he felt his blood go cold.  was that a real thing that happened?  “i could stake the shit out of you right now if i wanted to, stefan.  don’t fucking test it.”  maybe this wouldn’t be the best time to give into the voices shrieking ‘kill all the vampires’ in his head.  elena would forgive him eventually, right?  he steadied his breathing.  he wasn’t gonna be the same scared kid he used to be any time he was faced with some kind of monster.  was that what stefan was now?  another one of them?

“that sounds impossible.  and yes, before you say it, i realize all of this is impossible.  but that sounds crazy, even by our standards.”  he gestured broadly to the world they lived in.  “i’ve got bigger problems than that, no offense.”

If everyone was here they might know that but you, Elena and Damon all went MIA.” Bitterness was clearly there but how could it not be? “We’re facing genocide, Jer.” She clarifies for him, it wasn’t some unknown threat. These people were going to wipe the supernatural from the face of the earth for two people’s actions. “I’m half surprised to see you on this side of the fence.” He was human after all, he could go on with a somewhat normal life if he wanted to as far as she knew.

“i went MIA?  what was i supposed to do, bonnie?  i graduated, elena was gone, alaric had the girls.  i couldn’t just stay here forever.  there was nothing for me.”  she was right.  it was genocide.  he felt a bit hypocritical, having been out hunting and now he was here trying to prevent death?  “you and me both.  but i couldn’t let the people i care about get hurt.  you included.”

“how exactly are you part-vampire?  i thought it was kind of a yes-or-no situation.”  he scratched the back of his neck, in thought.  “and i’m jeremy.  now are you gonna kick my ass?”

“it’s not a big deal, don’t worry about it.”  even without seeing her face in that moment, he knew she’d immediately put on her best concerned expression.  and it was definitely warranted, but he was trying not to freak her out.  “just — something i came across while i was out following leads.”  i have an insatiable urge to stake every vampire in a 50-mile radius.  “that’s all.”

jeremy recoiled slightly at her attitude.  he knew it had been a while since he’d seen bonnie, but jesus.  “yeah, you and me both.  christ.  next time i’ll just let the vampire stalk you.”  he scoffed, but felt bad snapping at her almost right away.  his tone changed.  “alaric’s doing his best to get everyone ready for . . .  whatever we’re up against.  it’s good to see you again, bon.”
