Chinese way of cooking blamed for air pollution
A trillion-yuan plan to clean Beijing’s air has been released last month. One of the 84 targets of Beijing’s Air Cleaning Action plan is outdoor barbecues. The government has promised zero tolerance, and has effectively banned the practice.
While some residents question the move, arguing that eating what’s commonly known in Beijing as “chuanr” outside is an important part of life in Beijing, Zhao Huimin, director of the Beijing Foreign Affairs Office pointed fingers at Chinese cooking.
“Our Chinese cooking styles also contribute a lot to PM 2.5 density. We hope Beijing citizens cooperate with us and work with the government to clean the air.” Zhao told journalists in an interview with Shanghai’s Dragon TV on Monday.
The remarks triggered public ridicule on social networks the following day. Many people asked jokingly: “Is Beijing going to ban cooking during next year’s APEC?”
Some couldn’t’ help but ask what’s next? “Fart pollutes the air, too. We hope citizens fart as little as possible,” one netizen joked. (With inputs from Offbeat China)
NOT THE CHUANR
Chinese drinking culture is giving me the irresponsible high school drinking experience I never had. Instead of 'cheers' it's "gan bei?" "gan bei!" (empty glass? empty glass!)
if I were looking for a Chinese boyfriend, I'd start in the Sanlitun Apple Store...
some observations and cultural points
the proper way to get on the subway is, once it rolls up, nearly press your nose to the glass waiting for the door to open.
if someone gives you their seat while they're exiting the train, it's not really a complement, but it's nothing short of magical.
give up your seat to mothers and elders frequently and fervently
don't say 'thank you' if someone hasn't done anything for you, make sure you're actually giving thanks, otherwise acknowledge small kindnesses without words.
don't say 'excuse me' or 'pardon me' if you're trying to get through a crowd; there's too many people and it's too much effort.
people don't wait in lines, if you need something, there's no need to be aggressive; just be persistent.
Blood-sucking bed bugs found in the Beijing-Shanghai high speed train.
A netizen first published a video of several bedbugs he found on the train, leaving him itching packages. Bedbugs were running wildly with unhygienic condition in 50’s and 60’s, they are very tiny and feed only on blood.
AHHHHH
The terracotta warrior statues are about as outstanding in real life as they are in the pictures...not very...

798 Art Festival
The annual comprehensive art festival is being held from September 21 to October 20 at the 798 Art Zone in Beijing, featuring nearly 100 art events.

How I feel on a Beijing bluesky day
Why does travel have to be exciting? Just like anything else stressful there are highs and lows; travel just has particularly high highs and low lows. We're about to set out for Xi'an via train. It'll be an experience, but not a new one. I've already been in the region a couple times before and I've experienced train travel in China a half dozen times. Hopefully my Chinese will improve and that the Laduzi will be minimal.
Kaiser Kuo came and talked to us yesterday. He had some pretty cool things to say, much of which stuck with me. Aside from being outstandingly successful, he's a badass and has an extremely positive attitude about life in China.
One of the things he talked about was how the media is influenced in China. (1) Many reporters initially take a negative attitude to China because of how the Chinese government treats them. They're frequently followed, spied on, and harassed. (2) In terms of political coverage, the Chinese political right is covered more heavily because they're supportive of more liberal "American" policies which makes them relatable and easier to talk too; they also tend to make themselves more available to American media than the conservative left. (3) Weibo is not a good representation of Chinese political climate.
He also talked about China in terms of PR. The analogy he used to described China is that of a guy trying to pick up white chicks (the white chicks being Western countries). China has built up its infrastructure and made great strides in the past few decades, but in terms of international appeal, China still lacks a sense of humor and confidence.
Over the course of the night, Kaiser continued to emphasize how amazing it is to be in China right now. Things are constantly changing and improving, and it's easy to see all these changes in an enormous city like Beijing. China is happening and upcoming, and overall, has so much to offer. He recommended a couple cool places to see in the city, and I'm excited to check them out.
