I was reading that interview where Nasu and Urobochi talk about the diffent types of love in FSN, and Nasu mentions how Heaven's Feel depicts the love of a man for a woman despite her flaws, and it made me realise, as much as I love them because I love Sakura, how disappointing and darn right contridictive Parvati and Kama are to the message of Heaven's Feel. Essentially what they've done here is separate Sakura from her flaws. If you like the idea of devoited house wife, you have Parvati, who's (and please understand this isn't me criticising the orginal Hinduism, the issue strictly lies with Sakura and how her character is handled in past entries and why this is contridictive,) whole stick is kind of to be a housewife, or at least I believe that's how DW interpreted it and why they picked Parvati for her. Essentially, the story goes Parvati goes into the cave to try and distract Shiva from his meditation by tempting him and tries to earn his affections by cooking and cleaning for him, decorating the apartment, leaving him offerings of fruit, quietly serving him. When this doesn't work, she realises she needs to get on his level and devotes herself entirely to his cause of meditation, removing herself from all bodily desires. Remember in Heaven's Feel when Sakura calls herself dirty because of all the sexual assault she's suffered, and Shirou replies "kirei, " meaning beautiful AND clean, ultimately loving her for who she is and looking past all that? Yeah, not applicable to Parvati. Parvati is Sakura removed from all flaw, a character who removed herself from all sexual desire to devote herself to becoming a man's wife. If Parvati had her own personality of her own this would be fine, but she's literally just Sakura removed of what makes her Sakura to be marketable as a good perfect waifu. Basically, Parvati if you like "good" girls, Kama if you like "bad" girls. And then there's the obvious tactlessness of presenting a sexual assault victim as a hypersexualised god of desire, but I wouldn't have an issue with this if these two sides were represented under the same saint graph because Sakura is hypersexual and that's okay, it's just that in FSN these two sides are balanced out, Sakura wants to be what she perceives as an ideal good wife for Shiro, but she's unable to control her desires and inherent flaws.
Splitting a female character into "good wife" and "bad sex symbol" is pretty awful all round, but while the fandom would probably disagree with me, I feel Kama is far more redeemable than Parvati, because even if it's tactless, women are allowed to be hypersexual and who are we to police how an assault victim would react to their abuse. At least Kama is an embrace of character flaws, something not in line with traditional Japanese wife values, where Parvati denounces flaws to be a more ideal wife; in my opinion, watering down a sexual assault victim to make her a more easily consumable product for men is far more unforgivable than presenting her as a woman who is who she is regardless of whether you like it or not, hypersexual and all.
