absolutely HATE it when people act like characters like Regina George and Sharpay are ✨feminist icons✨
look, you can like these characters. i can't deny that they were iconic but they're absolutely NOT feminists. these two were the most male-centered misogynistic pick-me girls ever.
Regina lied to Cady about setting her up with a guy and instead started flirting with him and told him that Cady was a creep. she fucked with a girl's life because she was dating Gretchen's ex. i mean, if Regina was truly a girl's girl, she would screw over the guy, not the girl. he was the one who dumped Gretchen.
and Sharpay literally chased after Troy while he was dating Gabriela. she kept trying to make moves on Troy after he explicitly told her he was with Gabriela and was not interested in Sharpay.
these were the most misogynistic women ever, i'm sorry. just because they were loud and outspoken doesn't make them feminists. you can talk a lot and say absolutely nothing, and that's what these girls did.
even worse when people act like Gabriela was boy crazy or like her life revolved around Troy, when that simply wasn't the case.
in the first movie, during the big third act breakup, Troy says that Gabriela didn't matter to him. and that was his fault. their friends tried to break up their relationship, but no one told Troy to say that shit.
and Gabriela gets this. even when Taylor tells her later that it was all their fault, Gabriela just says that no one forced Troy to say all that. and it's true. all it took was Chad and the group to list a bunch of basketballers for Troy to be like "yeah fuck that girl, i never liked her anyway".
Gabriela was never an 'i can fix him' girly. she knew her worth and she didn't act like Troy was a manchild who constantly needed to be coddled.
similarly in the second movie, when Troy started acting like an asshole to his friends and blowing off dates with Gabriela, she once again stood up for herself and broke up with him.
and THIS conversation with Sharpay says everything you need to know:
Gabriela: I'm not interested in what you think you're doing for Troy. That's between you and him. But you're messing with my friends, my summer, and that's not okay with me.
Sharpay: You don't like the fact that I won.
Gabriela: What's the prize? Troy? The Star Dazzle Award? You have to go through all of this just to get either one?
Gabriela: No, thanks, Sharpay. You're very good at a game that I don't want to play, so I'm done here. But you better step away from the mirror long enough to check the damage that will always be right behind you.
OOHHHH THE WAY SHE FUCKING CLOCKED SHARPAY
anyone who says that Gabriela isn't feminist or that she's just a pushover clearly hasn't watched this movie.
see how Gabriela isn't ready to fight over a boy with Sharpay. she knows better, she's mature enough to understand that if a guy likes you, you wouldn't have to fight for him.
Sharpay was immature and selfish. she didn't even like Troy, she just wanted him as her purse dog, to boost her status. going after another girl's man is the most un-feminist and quite honestly, the most pathetic thing you can do. Sharpay had guys drooling over her and yet, she chose to fuck another girl over by trying to get with her boyfriend.
and let's also talk about how Gabriela always prioritized her education. she loved Troy but she made it clear that she was going to Stanford regardless. she wasn't one to throw away her future for a guy she met in highschool.
Sharpay on the other hand was ambitious, sure, but she was also extremely wealthy and privileged. even if she didn't work hard, she could have easily gotten into any college because of her nepo baby privileges.
“be a rich nepo baby pick-me who chases after men in a world full of girls who know their worth and prioritize education and their future” is basically what this is saying.
fuck that. be like Gabriela. be kind but also stand up for yourself. care about your friends but don't extend any grace to people who want to fuck you over. be in a relationship but don't let your entire life revolve around a man. focus on education but also have fun with your friends.
