milo laughed once more, the previous incident (if he could call it that) with the cashier already forgotten. “alright, alright. touché, mrs. mysterious.” milo titled his head, the smile still playing on his face.
“you’re a real aorrgant pain, d’you know that?” the joking tone in milo’s voice was very obvious, but he tried to maintain a straight face - it was hard, her smile is very contagious.
“I’ve been told that, yes. Its no newsflash.” Her grin turned smug as she crossed her arms over her chest. What was it about him that was so interesting? Normally he wouldn’t be her type. Then again, Jieun wasn’t sure she really even had a type. He must’ve been a few years her junior but something about him was on her level as well.
“And just think,” Her tone because excited for a moment as she mocked him with her words. “You don’t even know me. Imagine how dreadful I’d be if we weren’t strangers.”

“i told you mine.”
at this, milo allowed himself a loud laugh at his own expense for giving out his name to a complete stranger without hesitation. dumbass, he reprimanded himself with a chuckle, looking at the female infront of him with a smile. “but you know what, i’ll let it go because i like you.” he sent her a smirk, one he used to use to charm his way into someone’s pants, however this time, it was used to get her to open up to him a bit more.
“Ah, but you see,” She began, pointing an accusatory finger in his direction. “The difference is that I never asked for your name. You decided you wanted to tell me and so you did. What if I’m deciding I don’t want to tell you mine? Besides, don’t men love a mysterious woman?” As much as she tried to maintain a straight face, she couldn’t fight the tug at the corners of her lips. Something about him was intriguing and charming and perhaps that’s why she was still here.
“Should I be flattered by that, Mr. Dohyun? A lot of people like me, y’know.” It was a bold face lie, but he didn’t need to know that right now. Instead, Jieun figured maybe a little playful banter would be enough to lighten her mood. After all, the sickness she’d been cursed with felt like a dark cloud overhead all week now.

his bag in hand, milo blinked slowly in confusion before a smile took over his face. he liked her attitude, it was something fresh and barely seen around anymore. she didn’t pry into his life aswell, which was definitely a plus.
“hey, don’t - don’t leave yet.“ milo sounded desperate to his ears but it wasn’t meant to be anything of that sort, he was just curious about her and who she is. why did she help him? “what’s your name?”
it was odd, really, milo barely showed any attention to anybody he didn’t know (most of the time he didn’t trust anyone enough to get to know them, you never know who’s being true and who’s not ), but something kept nagging at milo to take a chance.
“What? Your savior and hero can’t remain anonymous?” A smirk played at her lips as she asked the question. It wasn’t the first time she’d avoided a question regarding her name. Jieun liked to be a woman of mystery, even if she was nowhere near it. She would often refrain from telling her name to strangers, giving the excuse of remaining interesting, yet at word she literally had her name written on her white coat. “We don’t know each other. It’s not like we’re actually married. Why should I tell you my name?”

milo was ready to leave the groceries there and walk out because lord, does this woman not shut up. milo was almost at his boiling point, something he never wanted to reach ever again, when he heard a nasally voice from behind him speak.
“honey?” dohyun muttered to himself, a confused expression marring his face. the woman rested her hand on his arm, and milo suddenly understood what hshe was trying to do. “ah, yeah. hey baby, i thought you already went back to the car.” milo was a musician, not an actor, and he was sure that the loving smile he tried to put on looked more awkward than fond.
milo turned to the cashier, who seemed to finally shut her trap (thank god! rather, thank you strange woman), and pulled out his wallet. he payed for his groceries, as well as the woman’s as a small way of saying thanks, and held the bags in his hand, hurrying out the store as quick as possible.
“thank you so, so much. “ milo breathed out, a forced laugh coming out of his chest. he knew he should ignore it, but the woman’s words really did hit a nerve. milo’s past career and scandal was a sensitive topic for him, one he never brought up again, and to hear someone speak to negatively and casually about it hurt.
“i’m mi- uh, dohyun.“
Her smile faltered and turned into a bit of a sneer in the clerk’s direction as they hurried out of the store. If there was one thing Jieun hated the most, it was nosy people. It may have made her a bit of a hypocrite, but she hated when people stuck their noses into business that wasn’t theirs, especially when it came to one’s past. Jieun often found herself curious as well, as it was only human nature to be as such, but she tried her hardest not to inconvenience others.
“Dohyun-ssi.” She said, testing the name on her tongue. Her eyes didn’t meet his, but instead were focused on the wallet she’d pulled from her purse. Her thin, shaky fingers flipped through the bills and pulled out a small wad of cash. She hated people paying for her, even if it was a thank you toward her. Jieun held out the money with one hand, and held out an open palm with the other. All she needed now was her soups and she could leave with a clear conscious.
As he spoke, however, the name began to make sense. When she lived in Seoul, there was a popular artist named Milo. It wasn’t too odd to be a coincidence, but Jieun wasn’t one to jump to conclusions. His voice served as a bit of proof towards her theory. It was unique and beautiful, much like him she noticed as her gaze moved up to him. What the hell was she thinking involving herself in this? What happened to her craving for a normal, secluded lifestyle?
“Here. It should be enough for my things.” Seeming to ignore his thanks, Jieun offered a bow of the head and turned on her heels to leave. Before she could make any leeway, the woman paused and turned back around to face Milo. “Word of advice: If it happens again, deny it. Pretend you don’t know what they’re talking about. You might not have such a beautiful woman to save your ass next time.”

deep breaths, milo reminded himself, his face set in a what he hoped looked like somewhat of a half smile but was probably more of a grimace than anything. it was times like that this that dohyun is forced to remind himself of the vow he took a couple years prior. he was certain that cussing someone out till their ears bled didn’t count as being a better person.
the day had started off seemingly good, and dohyun woke up in a rather good mood. the weather was the best it’d been the past couple of weeks and dohyun had no shift to take this night, so yes, it was a good day. deciding to go grocery shopping, milo got dressed in something other than sleepwear and grabbed his car keys in hand, twirling them in his fingers.
it was a tuesday, and most jeju city occupants were already at work or school; the street was practically empty, other than the rare person strolling, when milo reached the grocery store. the twenty five year old got what he needed and headed to the check out to pay for his purchases, which he would have been done with, if it asn’t for the nosy clerk his luck chose for him.
“you’re - you’re milo, right?” the clerk had asked excitedly, dohyun figured she was a fan of his and nodded with a gentle smile. “yeah, i am.”
“oh my god, i love your music,” milo was abut to open his mouth to thank her when she continued, “or..at least i used to.” now, milo was confused. and a little offended. “i’m sorry?”
“you should have known better, i mean, come on! how dumb can you get to let that happen to you and your career? you just weren’t cut out for that field i guess…” the clark continued on, wihtouth even bothering to check his items, and milo clenched his jaw, drawing in a breath through his teeth. he doesn’t think he can stay so patient with this person.
As the days passed, Jieun’s illness became better and better. She reckoned only a few more days of soup and naps would do the trick and she’d be able to return to work soon enough. The tough part about working in the healthcare industry was the fact that you couldn’t just ‘feel better’ in order to return to work, you actually had to be better. She had gotten up, prepared to make soup for herself (a feat that even the worst cook in the world could pull off) when she realized there was none left. She didn’t really want to go out today, but sitting at home listening to nothing but the sound of her stomach grumbling didn’t quite appeal to her either.
She was quick in her movements, filling up her little basket with the cheapest cans of soup she could locate and even picked up a small bag of dog food while she was there. Jieun wanted to get in and get out as quickly as possible so that she could get back home, especially since she was pretty sure she might have left the stove on. She was used to people, even the talkative ones. She wasn’t a fan of conversations, but with her profession sometimes it was necessary. While normally it was easy to simply block it out and ignore the world around her, Jieun found herself eavesdropping on the conversation between the male and the cashier in front of her.
Jieun thought the name sounded familiar, which was why she began to listen in the first place. The clerk seemed to be excited about something and it wasn’t rare to have famous people on the island. But as Jieun watched the way the male’s face shifted at the cashier’s words, she began to feel impatient. Small talk was fine, but clearly this kid wasn’t enjoying the topic. Maybe it was the sickness in her veins or the slight chill running through her bones that made her so impatient, but something made her speak up.
“Oh, honey! I was looking for you all over the store.” Her voice was nasally and a bit ragged from her stuffed up nose. If Mirae saw her right now, she’d surely believe that Jieun was high on some sort of cough medicine, but Jieun would play it off. An actress she was not, but considering how quickly the thought came to mind, it wasn’t a horrible job. She awkwardly rested a hand on his arm and turned her attention to the cashier, quickly setting her basket down on the counter and gesturing for the woman to hurry up-- possibly shut up while she was at it. “Sorry, Miss. My husband and I are in a bit of a rush, so could you hurry up, please?”

His fingers tapping idly on the edge of the guitar’s hollow body, a dull thud echoing in a satisfying manner beneath them. A smile soon pulled across his lips just a little at her reaction; for some reason it made her seem a little endearingly childish. Not that he would admit that to her. He valued his life too much and she seemed like the type to throw a heel at his head or something.
“Ah, beca-” he paused his explanation as she continued talking, his hand soon moving from the guitar to his hair, fingers combing through the messy locks to somehow make them just slightly messier - a true talent that he had managed to cultivate over the years. One that had always infuriated his foster mother; she’d much rather he stay nice and proper looking but knew it would never happen.
Looking up and down the street where he was playing, he wondered why he had picked this place. It was a bit different than his usual places. But maybe that was why he picked it. He never liked to stay in the same place too often. It lost the appeal that way.
“Well, ma’am, I’ll be sure to tell people to not send me to your ER if I ever do get hit then,” he murmured with a slightly cheeky grin. “I just decided that this looked like a good place truthfully. And it’s served me well so far.” With that said, he motions towards the guitar case that had quite a nice stack of bills and coins in it.
Her eyes flicked down to the guitar case, scattered with money from passerbys. She never understood why or how people could sit on the side of the road and practically beg for extra loose change. Perhaps it was because Jieun was born into a well-off family and therefore she never had to worry about money. Or maybe it was because she was so independent that asking anyone for anything would only be a blow to her pride. But she knew not everyone was as immodest as she.
“Just how long have you been out here?” The question escaped her lips while her gaze remained on the case. To her, the money he had collected was nothing. That amount of money was around the same amount she received as allowance as a preteen. In moments like this Jieun found herself realizing just how much she took after her mother. She never considered herself snooty, but as she watched his features, she couldn’t help but feel pity towards him. “I earn this much in less than an hour.”

Mirae had always been someone who easily worriedfor others, always wanting the best for everyone. Perhaps this could be adoctor’s trait or maybe it was only because of who she was, someone with anextremely soft and kind heart. Messages were obviously shared between themwhile Jieun was sick, but this didn’t decrease her worries for her condition.Visiting her wasn’t possible, not only because of her shifts at the hospital, but also because she always had the misfortune of catching any disease easily. Some doctors were sick at home because of the storm of Valentine’s Day.Therefore, she didn’t have the chance of doing anything, only messaging her.
❝Eventerrible, you look a bit better.❞ Mirae commented with one of her brightsmiles, her eyes curving slightly into her distinctive eye smile. She reallywas pleased for seeing Jieun out of her apartment. This could only mean thatshe was feeling a bit better, despite everything else. Doctors were humans tooand they were allowed to get sick like any of their patients. ❝Of course!❞ Mirae exclaimed, almostlike this was the most obvious thing in the whole world. ❝I was worried with you. I wanted to visit you but I have been workingmore shifts recently.❞ She told her with a shrug. ❝I was going to make a surprise today, but you beat me to it.❞
“Ah, sorry about that. I’m sure I’ll be back and at it again by next week. Then maybe that’ll take some hours off your plate.”
She gave a soft smile, showing a hint of guilt towards the other. Mirae was a competent, hard-worker so Jieun knew she was more than capable of handling a heavy load of work and long hours, but it didn’t mean that was what she should have to deal with. While Jieun didn’t mind working all the time, she knew Mirae’s life would probably suffer more than hers. Jieun was a workaholic and always said she was married to her work, mostly because she had no plans or intents of actually getting married. Mirae, on the other hand, was different. She was beautiful and kind and Jieun often said she’d make the best wife.
“I can just pretend to be surprised.” Jieun offered with a smirk. “You’ll get to see how bad of an actress I am.”

he was a little surprised. mostly because he hadn’t expected anyone to actually speak to him. most kind of just walked by and, if he was lucky, they tossed some money into the guitar case that lay open near him. rarely did he actually have someone stop and talk to him. or, in this case, demand to know what he was doing.
fingers slowed to a halt in their strumming, the boy leans back a little, looking up at her with curious eyes. it almost felt like a trick question. wasn’t it obvious? did this area not often have people performing? he supposed that was entirely possible. when he’d first got to jeju, he rarely saw other people like him. the island seemed too… wholesome… to have a large homeless or street musician population.
“i’m… playing music. for money?” his voices came out slowly, because he was honestly not sure how to explain what he was doing. his words came out a little like a question; as though he, himself, wasn’t sure what he was doing. truthfully, if the grand scheme of things, that question was a doozy.
Jieun’s eyes nearly rolled into the back of her head as he answered. Maybe the question was stupid to begin with. If she didn’t want a stupid answer, she should’ve phrased it differently. Thankfully, she’d had her coffee this morning and that prevented her from being too rude to the poor kid, but it didn’t mean he’d escape her wrath.
“I meant,” She started, crossing her arms over her chest and sighing. “Why are you doing it here? Wouldn’t a coffeeshop or some place off the street be better?”
In Jieun’s mind, her words made sense, but to other’s they might not. Why was this woman stopping and demanding information that was seemingly useless? A normal person would think such a question was pointless. Why would it matter to her where he played music? Why would or should she care at all? Thinking about this in the back of her mind, Jieun decided to clarify a bit.
“Do you know how many people I’ve treated in my emergency rooms for getting hit by cars? And do you know the amount of those people who were doing nothing except walking on the sidewalk? Being immobile out here, playing your guitar for some loose change is basically asking to get hit.” Okay, she maybe she was exaggerating slightly, but it wasn’t like she was a stranger to that concept. “If I see you in my ER, I’ll take that guitar of yours as compensation.”
