it's been so long since you've been inside xavier's apartment but nothing has changed since the last time you were here, except right now, there are mission documents spread across his coffee table and the floor beside it. you have two long abandoned coffee mugs sitting in between the mess on the table. you and xavier have been trying to figure out the strategy plan for your mission tomorrow for the past three hours. when you start yawning, however, you know it's time for you to call it a night.
you start to pack up your things, while xavier stretches in his seat on the floor.
"are you nervous?" he asks between a big yawn.
"for?"
"tomorrow?"
you've been over the plan multiple times tonight. you know the layout of the building like the back of your hand. you've thought of every possible thing that could go wrong and you have back up plan upon back up plan in your back pocket if all else fails.
"nope," you pop the last syllable as you zip up your backpack. you look up at xavier. "are you?"
"no," he laughs. "i'm not scared of anything."
you pull your backpack onto your shoulder and do a final sweep of the coffee table to make sure you haven't left anything. you push yourself off the floor. xavier slowly gets up as well. he walks you to the door, leaning against it while you get your shoes.
"i'll see you tomorrow," xavier says.
you slide on your shoes and look back at him. he stares at you like he's trying to uncover something. you squirm a bit under his gaze. your mind goes back to your conversation earlier about mei, and how quick he was to clock you. it's very disquieting how, even after everything, he still knows you so well. even after everything, he can still peer inside your mind with such ease.
xavier holds his arms wide open and nods at you knowingly. you roll your eyes, but you walk to him nonetheless. his arms close around you slowly. you can feel every second of the hug. you're wrapped in the scent of his lavender laundry detergent. xavier presses his hand into your shoulder blades before he steps back.
"we're going to be fine, xav."
"i know,"
"see you tomorrow."
he opens the door for you and you step out of his apartment. you walk towards the elevator at the end of the hall, until you hear footsteps running towards the stairwell in the corner. you stop.
"hello?" you call out.
silence follows at first. however, as you move closer to the doorway of the stairwell, the clearer you can hear the very careful and controlled sound of someone breathing and trying not to get caught.
you walk to the stairwell door and push it open.
mei is crouched in the corner of the landing, with her back pressed against the wall. her knees are drawn up against her chest, arms wrapped around them. she glances upward with a pained smile.
she straightens up slightly, while still crouching. "oh, what are you doing here?"
"get up."
she grabs onto the railing and unfolds herself off the concrete landing, facing you at full height. "i was just going for a walk," she laughs nervously, brushing her elbow.
"you live downstairs."
"okay," she sighs. "i wanted to see when you and xavier would be done."
"how long have you been here for?"
"like, ten minutes." she winces.
"gosh, mei." you drag your fingers down your face.
"okay, in my defense, you left me hanging."
"i was working," you respond incredulously.
"well, you're done. so, we can talk now." mei stares at you expectantly, like she has nowhere else to be. you stare back at her, bewildered. it's crazy that she left her apartment to come hide in a stairwell like a creep.
"oh my god," you groan. "i am surrounded by insane people." but you're already heading down the stairs.
in mei's apartment, she ushers you to the loveseat and takes the couch diagonally across from you. you slump your backpack down on the floor beside you with an exhale. "okay, what did you want to talk about?" you lean into the couch pillow.
mei adjusts to sit criss-cross. she pulls her sleeves down over her hands and holds the cuffs loosely in her fingers. she clears her throat before she speaks. "let's talk about whatever xavier told you."
"yeah, why would you lie to me?"
she doesn't answer right away. you can see her thinking over her response as she bites the inside of her cheek. "it's embarrassing."
"having a crush on me is embarrassing?"
mei looks up mortified. "god, no. not that. it's just thatβ" she pauses. "i just didn't think that you liked me." she looks down again, her eyes locking onto a loose thread on the sleeve of her cardigan. "and, i don't know. i just don't want to ruin things between us."
"i don't really know what to say."
something shifts in mei's expression. you're sure there was a part of her that was already expecting that response, and she's trying to absorb it gracefully. she nods and straightens up. "we can forget about everything," she starts. "i respect you so much, yn, and i'm more than happy being friends with you. let's just start over."
"i don't know if i can start over either."
"i can work alone, or i can move to research." she reaches for her phone from the coffee table. "actually, let me text jenna right now and tell her that i want to be transferred to a different teamβ"
"oh my god, mei. relax."
she swallows and sets her phone down in her lap. "sorry,"
"i don't want you to transfer, or move to research."
"i just don't want to make you uncomfortable."
you stand up and cross the small distance between your chair and the couch. you sit down beside mei, your shoulders just short of coming in contact. "you don't make me uncomfortable."
mei's hands go still in her lap. "i don't think that i can be normal around you anymore."
"yeah, you're probably right."
she immediately turns to you, a little caught off guard.
you try to hold it in for a bit, but the more her eyebrows furrow, the harder it is to maintain your poker face. "i mean, if you've been normal all this while, i would really hate to see you being 'not normal'."
"ha ha." she deadpans, shoving you lightly. you burst into laughter, falling to the side as you do so. mei rolls her eyes, but once you finally relax and sit up again, you notice that she's pressing her lips together to keep from smiling.
"i was saying, i don't want to start over because we've been through so much together."
"yeah, i remember when you hated me."
"i never hated you."
"well," she tilts her head. "it felt like that."
"anyway." you clear your throat. "i also have been dishonest with you about how i feel." your pulse is picking up and you're so close to backing down and saying forget about it. mei angles her body towards you and. you know that you need to face your truth. you take a deep breath. "i think i've also liked you for a while nowβfor longer than i would like to admit, even to myself. and you know about everything with xavier and iβ¦ i just don't want to go through that again. at least not right now."
mei presses her lips together. she turns her head towards her large window, where cars zoom down the street. neither of you says anything for a moment. you wait for mei to turn back, to say something and put you out of your misery, however she seems preoccupied by the sirens of an approaching ambulance.
you open your mouth to say something, but mei beats you to it. "so, what now?" she asks.
"i don't know. i didn't really think that far ahead. i just wanted us to be honest with each other."
mei nods. "you have a mission tomorrow."
"yes, i do."
"you should go. it's late," she shoots up from her seat. "and i know tomorrow is going to be a long day for you."
your brows furrow at mei, who is already halfway to the door. you stand up. "yeah, you're probably right."
you join mei at the door. the two of you stand in the doorway, waiting for the other to react.
you lean forward first, slow enough that you have plausible deniability. maybe she has a rogue feather in her hair or dirt from the stairwell smudging her cheek. but mei doesn't move away or flinch. she actually leans into you, maintaining your eye contact until she's too close. she closes her eyes first, and you follow suit.
when your lips meet, the first thing you register is how gentle the kiss is. her lips are soft and warm, though unsettled against yours. nevertheless, as the kiss deepens, you feel her hesitation slip away with each passing second.
you pull back and mei's eyes linger on you, her lips parted slightly and her cheeks flushed. before you can react, she's pulling you back in with more confidence. it takes you by surprise. mei is courageous. she's always ready to jump into battle, even without a plan. but you've never known her to be this forward. still, you let the warmth wash over you. her arms find their way around your waist, pulling your bodies closer together. you almost forget where you are, your better senses slowly but surely defeated as you succumb to the sweetness of the kiss. you run your tongue along your bottom lip, relishing the lingering taste of her peppermint tea. mei's lips part and you slip your tongue inside her mouth.
it's not until her hands slip down to your hips, and you feel her tug you back into her apartment, that you finally snap back into reality.
you pull away slightly. "wait, mei." you mumble against her lips.
"mmh?" she hums.
"i actually have to go."
"do you have to?"
you chuckle. "you were kicking me out just a second ago."
"okay, well i changed my mind." her hands finds yours. she intertwines her fingers in yours.
"i will text you tomorrow." you concede. "and i will talk to you when xavier and i get back."
"okay," she responds with a pout. you lean in to give her a quick kiss and her lips curves into a small smile.
"i'll see you later."

every six months, on a dreaded tuesday, the hunters association welcomes it's latest class of recruits. everyone on your team seems excited to welcome the newcomers, but you couldnβt care less. however, that seems increasingly difficult when your recruit has made it her life mission to get you to love her.
Zuko doesnβt understand why you donβt want to cuddle during a heatwaveβ¦
βCan you tell me why exactly I canβt touch you today? No, scratch that β why I canβt even stand near you? Did I do something wrong? My love, if I did, then please know that it wasnβt intentional and Iβm sorry.β
You were going to melt.
Not only because his words were so innocent and heartwarming, but also because Fire Nation heat β especially during the summer β isnβt exactly something you were built to withstand.
Your heart cries any time you have to push him away, especially because you donβt even have the time to explain why. The second you move away, heβs narrowing his eyes in confusion and leaving the room.
You couldnβt help but be surprised at his sudden straightforwardness.
Of course, over the years he has grown to be more open about his thoughts and feelings, but it seems like he still couldnβt fight some of his old habits. When something really bothers him, he prefers to keep it to himself. Shut himself out and hope for the best, hope it resolves by itself. But seeing as it has been a few days and youβre still pushing him away, his bubble finally burst.
βPlease, my love. Explain what I did wrong, why you keep pushing me away. Iβll do better, just tell me what I did wrong.β he spoke again, his voice gentle yet clearly vulnerable. You sighed, eyeing him pitifully.
βZuko, honey, Iβ¦ you didnβt do anything wrong. Iβve wanted to tell you why I keep moving away for the past few days, but any time I triedβ¦ you just left.β you hummed, moving a little closer to him. You could feel the heat radiating from him already, but you decided to try your best and ignore it.
βIβ¦ did? I justβ I assumed you wanted to be aloneβ¦β
You swore you could hear his voice crack a little as he said that. Your lip quivered, hands moving to cup his face without so much as a second thought. His face was warm, and your palms were already sweaty from the heat inside the palace. Somehow, he didnβt seem to notice β or just didnβt really care β his gaze focused on yours as his much larger hand moved to cover one of yours.
βLook, Iβ¦ Iβm sorry, Zuko. I didnβt mean for it to look like Iβm pushing you away. I love you, and I need you, itβs justβ¦ this heat is far too much for me, and it doesnβt help when youβre basically a walking furnace yourselfβ¦ iβit sounds stupid, no, it is stupid, Iβm sorryβ¦β you murmured, head dipping in shame. Now that you said it out loud, it really did sound stupid.
It was just some heat after all, right?
βItβs not stupid. Iβ¦ I shouldβve been more aware. Itβs not your fault that youβre not accustomed to the heat, itβs my fault for not noticing how it affected you, and making it worse. You justβ¦ you just always manage to fit right in, Iβ¦ I actually forgot youβre not used to living here yet. Iβm sorry, my love, I really am.β he said, his thumb caressing your hand that still cupped his scarred cheek.
βIf this heat is too much for youβ¦ then how about we leave for a little while. Just the two of us? Somewhere cold where I could finally have you in my armsβ¦?β he added, a tiny smile tugging at his lips. Your eyes lit up, a smile of your own making its appearance. You honestly didnβt expect this from him, seeing how much of a workaholic he was.
βReally? Youβd take a vacation for me?β you asked, hopeful eyes focused on his. He chuckled, shaking his head a little as he pressed a quick kiss to the crown of your head.
βIf it means Iβll finally get to hold you properly and warm you upβ¦ Of course, my love. Iβll go announce our absence to the council, how does a whole week sound?β
again, not proofread π zuko fluff is just needed while iβm dying from overheating

warning(s): r is sad about her brother's death
βWhy are you pacing like that?βΒ
βIβm not pacing.βΒ
βAangβs right,β Sokka says. βYou are pacing. Like, the definition of it.βΒ
βWellβ what else am I supposed to do?β You throw your hands up. βWeβre not doing anything! Weβre just sitting around in the middle of nowhere!βΒ
βItβs called a break, princess.β Toph kicks the ground and a sizable boulder shoots up from the earth right in front of you, the perfect seat. βI think you could use one.β
You frown. βStop calling me that.β
βYouβre a rich noble who grew up at the palace with royalty,β she says. βThe shoe fits.βΒ
You canβt help but roll your eyes. Part of you has been raring for a fight since you got here, even if you washed up on shore half-dead only a few days ago. Itβs a genetic thing, probably, but you need to keep busy so you donβt think about what youβve doneβabout your brother. Lee is never going to forgive you.Β
Finally, you plant your foot on top of the rock. This skirt is still taking some getting used to, but itβs prettyβand if you could burn down a house in one, you can probably fight in one. βI just donβt get how youβre all able to do this.βΒ
βBecause we spend the rest of our time running and fighting for our lives, thanks to you,β Katara says. βBesides, your ribs havenβt finished healing yet. Rest is what you need right now.βΒ
βYouβve done like, three healing sessions. How are they not good yet?βΒ
βDid you forget when I said the sea nearly killed you?β she asks. βIt takes a lot to fix that.β
βAm I fixed yet?βΒ
βI donβt even think I could fix you,β she says wryly.Β
You huff a laugh. Her barbs donβt have much sting when she saved your life a few days ago. βThanks.βΒ
Sokka scrambles to his feet in the corner of your vision, and he grins when you focus on him. βIf you need something to do, wanna go out into town again? Katara hates this money, so I figure we should spend it all.βΒ
βWhat goes on in that brain of yours?β his sister asks.Β
βNobody knows,β Sokka says, shining eyes never leaving yours. You canβt help but smile, though you quickly bite it back with an exasperated sigh.Β
βI guess shoppingβs better than sitting around doing nothing.βΒ
-
Sokka is more scatterbrained than you expect.Β
When you were with Azula, you never won a single fight against him. You didnβt think he was cool or calculated, but his intelligence was the most obvious thing about him behind his looksβwhich is just an observation, not a confession.Β
Here, though, his brain can hardly move faster than his mouth. Sokka is a tornado in motion, dragging you along from place to place as he rambles about whateverβs in his mind.Β
While heβs trying on new shoes, he tells you about the day they found Aangβand the first time he realized how powerful his sister was. Between trips to get cups of water after Sokka tries your extra, extra, extra spicy udon, you tell him about the day you met Azula. When you end up at the post office, Sokka tells you to wait outsideβbut when he comes out, he is not alone.Β
You push yourself up from the wall. βYou canβt be serious.βΒ
βWhat? Iβve been wanting a way to send letters homeββ
βSo you bought a dragon hawk?β you marvel.Β
βI bet you used them all the time!β Sokka exclaims. The hawk perched on his shoulder looks as unamused as you are. βYou should know better than any of us how useful they are!βΒ
βHave you ever used a messenger hawk before?βΒ
β...No,β he admits. βBut it canβt be that difficult to figure it out, right?βΒ
You look over at the roosting tower with a sigh. Lee had an unhealthy obsession with dragon hawks when you were kids until one nearly scratched his eye outβand even then, you still think he wouldβve become a falconer if he didnβt pick up arrows first. Itβs almost identical to the one at your fatherβs training camp, but you bet these hawks actually get the chance to deliver their letters.Β
Your lips twist. Your father hid those letters and lied to your face for years with a straight face. Is he lying to you about other things? Hiding things from you?Β
The thought is unnerving.Β
βYou think a lot.β
You start as Sokka speaks, then you huff and look away.Β
βIβve got a lot on my mind.β
βI can imagine,β he says. βDo you regret betraying your nation yet?βΒ
βWhy do you have to keep saying it like that?β
βBecause itβs true.βΒ
βNo, itβs not.βΒ
Sokka shakes his head, brows creasing. You feel static on the back of your neck every time he looks at you like that. βWhy do you want to be loyal to them so badly?βΒ
βItβs not loyaltyββ
βThen what is it?β
Β βIt justβ it just is.βΒ
βThat doesnβt make any sense,β Sokka says.Β
You cross your arms. βThen maybe you should stop asking about it.β
Sokka continues to look at you, like heβs trying to figure out exactly what youβre thinking, but you know it wonβt work. Youβve gotten good at controlling your emotions after so much time at the palace.
His eyes eventually flit away and your shoulders relax, but then you see him frown.Β
βOh no.β
βWhat?β
He doesnβt answer right away as he walks towards a very full bulletin board, with fliers and advertisements and wanted posters. You recognize the Deserter and the Blue Spiritβbut Sokka tears off a different one, and your eyes widen when he holds it out.
Itβs your wanted poster. You recognize the painted likeness from your first and only portrait as a family of fourβperfect and prim dressed in the most regal robes possible, wearing your family sigil with pride. But you barely recognize that girl as yourself anymore.Β
βOh no is right,β you say faintly.Β
βYouβve been gone for like, three days,β Sokka says incredulously. βHow is this already here?β
βMy father.β A sinking feeling weighs in your chest. βHe moves fast when he wants to.βΒ
The poster very carefully avoids mentioning your betrayal, just offers a rather large reward for your return to the Fire Nation.Β
You know your fate if a bounty hunter manages to find you out here. You turn back to the board as you work to suppress your nausea, but you only find another problem.Β
βThat kinda looks like your earthbender friend,β you say, pointing at a poster. Itβs a crude drawing of a very angry girl with sharp teeth and her hair tied up. Itβs honestly pretty accurate.Β
βYeah, thatβs definitely Toph.β Sokka sighs. βTwo out of five isnβt bad. At least Aangβs isnβt up anymore now that everyone thinks heβs dead.β
You tear down the poster and huff. βTheyβre calling her the runaway, and thereβs a pretty big bounty on her head.β
βWell, theyβre calling youβ¦β Sokka shakes his head as he continues looking at the poster, then he frowns. βHey, what does this say?βΒ
βYou canβt read it?βΒ
βNo, I can, itβs justββ he pauses as you come to his side and he points at the line of characters below your painting. βI think Iβm translating it wrong. Itβs calling you Prince Zukoβs betrothed.βΒ
Your face heats as you cough and look away, and Sokkaβs jaw drops. βYouβre kidding!βΒ
βI was trying to figure out a wayββΒ
βYouβre engaged to Zuko?β he cries.
βWe canβt talk about this here,β you whisper-yell. You snatch the poster out of his hands and start moving, Sokka on your heels until you reach a quiet alleyway.Β
He looks at you expectantly, and you sigh and check one more time to make sure youβre alone before you lay back against the wall.Β
βIt wasnβt my choice, first of all. The Fire Lord just threw it on us when we got back from Ba Sing Se.βΒ
βYou go against the Fire Lord all the time!β
βNo, I donβtβ and be quiet!β you bite. βDo you want us to get found out?β
Sokka huffs, but heβs quieter when he speaks this time. βSo you like him.β
βNo!β
βYouβre engaged to him!β
βThat doesnβt mean we like each other!β you insist. βHavenβt you ever heard of an arranged marriage?β
Sokka crosses his arms. βI donβt have a great track record with them.βΒ
βWell, Iβm sorry,β you emphasize, βbut it doesnβt mean anything. It didnβt go anywhere when we were engaged as kids, and it wonβt go anywhere now.β
βYouβve been engaged to Zuko twice?β
βWhy does it matter?β you question.Β
You and Sokka both stare at each other for a good five seconds before he shrugs. βIt doesnβt.β
βThen why are you so upset about it?β
βIβm not!βΒ
βThen I guess weβre all settled,β you say. Sokka rolls his eyes and looks away.Β
βWhatever.β
βWe should get back to camp,β you say. βWeβve been gone for too long anyways, and I donβt want your sister to get on my case.βΒ
βSheβs just protective,β Sokka says. βAnd she has a good reason for it, with the stuff we do.βΒ
βWell, she already doesnβt like me,β you say. βCould youβ¦ not tell her about this?βΒ
βYou want to keep the biggest secret in the world from my sister that hates you?βΒ
βI donβt want her to hate me more!βΒ
βSheβll hate you more if you keep secrets from her,β he says.Β
βI just donβt think now is the time,β you insist. βIβ Iβll tell them all eventually, I just donβt want to do it now. Is that enough for you?βΒ
β...Fine,β Sokka says. βBut it has to be by the end of the week, or Iβm telling them myself.βΒ
You nod. βDeal.βΒ
βFine,β he repeats. He stares at you for a little longer and you crack a wry smile.Β
βAre we gonna go?βΒ
Sokka blinks and nods again. βYes. Yesβ yeah. Yeah.βΒ
β...So go.βΒ
βRight!βΒ
You canβt fully bite back your smile as Sokka begins walking with a purpose, you close behind him. The silence is surprisingly comfortable.
Heβll keep your secret.Β
-
As you and Sokka make your way back to camp, you find yourselves talking to fill the gaps, and meandering to lengthen the walk. You donβt want the conversation to endβthe way that Sokka shuffles backwards so he can keep looking at you while you walk and talk, you think he doesnβt either.Β
The closer you get, though, the louder you hearβ¦ crashing. Noβclashing, like rocks scraping up against each other times a thousand. The ground rumbles in the distance, and you look at Sokka in confusion.Β
βPlease tell me you hear that too.βΒ
βRelax,β Sokka chuckles. βToph and Aang are probably practicing earthbending.β
βThatβs a lot of noise for someone trying to stay hidden,β you say.Β
βWe do it all the time,β he says. βCβmon, weβre almost there.βΒ
You climb up some boulders and hop across a stream to make it back to camp, and you see they are indeed earthbending. Kataraβs eyes flick up to see you both from where sheβs sitting by a boiling cauldron before she looks away.Β
Itβs almost mind boggling how such tiny kids are capable of such powerful bending. Sure, youβre only a few years older than them, but Aang is the Avatar. Heβs responsible for saving the entire world from the war your nation started, and heβs got entire militaries trying to stop him.Β
You still canβt really understand why heβs so kind to you. The world would probably be a better place if you drowned that night.Β
βYou guys are finally back!βΒ
You come back into yourself to see Aang hopping down from a rock with a grin, Toph following him with less excitement.
βDid you buy anything cool?β she asks.Β
βUh, did I buy anything coolβ of course I did!β Sokka brandishes the hawk on his arm with a grin, and his sister does not look amused.Β
βDonβt tell me you bought a bird.βΒ
βHe is a messenger bird, and his name is Hawky,β Sokka says sagely. βNow we can send letters all over the world! Even to Gran Gran!βΒ
βWow, how does it work?β Aang asks.Β
Sokka glances at you, and you huff a laugh. βDragon hawks are trained for years by skilled falconers before theyβre able to carry messages. They follow specific routes that you know absolutely nothing about.βΒ
Sokka scoffs as his sister snorts, and he shoots you a dirty look. βItβs not that hard.β
You smile sweetly. βTry it then.βΒ
He grins at his hawk and points towards the sky. βHawky! Gran Gran, South Pole!βΒ
The dragon hawk just squawks, and Katara sighs. βWhat a waste of money.βΒ
βI think he gets it,β Sokka says.Β
A squeal draws your attention back to Aang, and a lemur you didnβt even notice before lunges off his shoulder over at the hawk, and Sokka sputters as they chase each other around his head.Β
βHawky, make nice! Bad Hawky!β He shouts your name as he screws his eyes shut. βDo something!βΒ
You just sigh and whistle two short blasts, followed by a longer, more shrill sound. The dragon hawk immediately stops and flies over to your arm, landing on your golden cuff to protect you from its talons.Β
βSee?β Sokka says, slightly dazed. The lemur climbs onto his head and sits like a king now that he has no one to tussle with. βEasy.βΒ
Aang laughs and holds out his arm. βMomo, can you do it too?βΒ
The lemur jumps off Sokkaβs head and onto Aangβs arm, and he grins as he gives him head scratches. βGood job, Momo. Youβre so talented.βΒ
βHowβd you learn how to do that?β Katara asks. She still has that hard edge to her voice that you think only comes out when sheβs talking to you, but her gaze isnβt as accusing.Β
βI went to a very prestigious academy,β you say. βWe learned everything from history to combat, including falconry basics. Traditionally trained messenger hawks respond to that call,β you smile as you hook a finger beneath his beneath to give him scratches, βso I bet weβll have no problem helping you become the best to ever fly through these skies, isnβt that right?β
You feel their eyes on you from your cooing, and you clear your throat. βSorry. I like dragon hawks.βΒ
βSo you got your skills from a fancy school,β Toph says.Β
βAnd a lot of time around Zuko and Azula,β you say wryly. βYou adjust quickly at the palace. Thereβs no other choice.β
βKinda sounds the same to how I learned.β
βAt a palace?β
βFrom badgermoles.β
βWhat?βΒ
βI still canβt believe you grew up in the palace,β Aang says, but youβre still staring at Toph. She does not stare back, as she is blind.Β
βYeah,β Sokka nods. βYouβre way less preppy than I expected you to be.β
You frown, finally looking away from Toph once itβs clear sheβs not going to make that make sense. βWhy would I be preppy?β
βYouβre basically a princessββ
βI am not.β
ββand Katara and I are kinda royalty tooββ
βWe are not!βΒ
ββso we know what itβs like, how hard it is to be humble.β
βIβm embarrassed to be related to you.βΒ
βYouβve already used that line, so it has no effect.β Sokka looks back at you. βI thought you would be stuck-up, basically.βΒ
You tap the dragon hawk on his beak and watch as he flies off your arm over to a rock near the sky bison. It takes an additional moment for you to gather your thoughts.Β
βI didnβt have much time for anything other than training,β you say. βMy father demands the best of us. My brother Lee is a Yuyan archerββ
βThose guys captured me!β Aang exclaims.Β
Sokka frowns. βWhen were you captured by archers?βΒ
Kataraβs glare at you is sharp enough to kill. βYour brother captured Aang?βΒ
βWe donβt need to worry about it!β Aang says hastily, and his cheeks flush red as he looks back at Katara. βIβ Iβm fine. Nothing happened. Sorry.βΒ
βYouβre not getting out of this,β Katara says, and somehow he blushes even harder.
βLeeβs the only nonbender in my family, so heβs had to work even harder than me,β you continue. βAnd then thereβs Kezu. Heβ¦βΒ
You shift from foot to foot as you try to conquer the sudden wave of nausea. Youβre barely able to think of your eldest brother without crying. βHe was promoted to commander right beforeβ¦βΒ
You try and fail to swallow the dread. Sokka and Aangβs concern makes you itchβeven Kataraβs eyes soften.Β
βAre you okay?β Aang asks gently.Β
βFine.β You force a quick smile as you clear your throat. βIβ Iβm gonna get some air.βΒ
βBut weβre already outsββ Sokka starts, but you donβt hear the rest of it as you hurry away, face burning.Β
What are you thinking, showing such weakness in front of your enemies?Β
Sure, maybe theyβre not your enemies enemies anymoreβbut youβre still theirs, youβre sure of it. How could you not be? Youβve done so many bad things to them, and even if you havenβt betrayed them, youβre still a traitor. If you can betray your princess, your best friends, then how could anyone ever trust you again?
Certainly not people as good as the Avatar and his team.Β
β¦Not Sokka.Β
The thought makes your head spin, and you stumble the last few steps down to the water. You let out a ragged sigh as you sink until your knees hit the ground, your reflection staring back at you.
Your hair is longer than itβs ever been. It drops just past your shoulder blades as you pull the pin out of your topknot, matted layers falling in tandem. You grimace. You need to get your hands on some camellia oil as soon as possible.Β
You tilt the pin in your hand. The simple flame matches Sokka and Kataraβs, a muted crimson rather than the shining gold that Zukoβs favor earned you. Right now, you donβt feel worthy of either. You donβt think youβve ever felt less honorable in your life.Β
βHey.βΒ
You jolt, heart racing like a rabaroo as you turn aroundβand then your eyes widen when you see Toph.Β
β...Hi,β you say, because you donβt really know what sheβs doing here.Β
βCome down here to sulk?β she asks.Β
βSorta.β A beat passes. βCome down here because your friends asked you to?β
Toph scoffs. βNo one tells me what to do.βΒ
βYeah,β you say with a slight smile. βIβve noticed.βΒ
She stands there, blank gaze staring at the ground, and then you finally clear your throat.Β
βWant to join me?βΒ
Toph doesnβt say anything, but she walks over and sits down next to you. She raises a finger and a tiny pebble flies into the air, then out across the water when she flicks it. The stone skips five times before sinking with a small splash.Β
βYouβre pretty good at that.βΒ
βDid you learn how to skip rocks at that fancy princess academy, princess?β
You huff. βIβm not a princess. Iβm the daughter of a general thatβs probably disowned me.βΒ
βJoin the club,β Toph says wryly. βMy dad kept me under lock and key until Aang showed up and gave me the strength to leave. Then he sent my old earthbending teacher and a wrestler to kidnap me and bring me home.βΒ
Your eyes widen. Sheβs only twelve and yet sheβs beating adults twice, no probably five times her size, without breaking a sweat. βHowβd you swing that?βΒ
βI invented metalbending,β she says.Β
β...Obviously.β
βYeah. Youβre lucky youβre not on my bad side anymore.β
You frown and glance over at her. βIβm not?βΒ
βThe Fire Nation hasnβt really hurt me,β Toph admits. βAnd you didnβt either.β
βI chased you across the whole Earth Kingdom.β
βAnd you did a pretty bad job at it.βΒ
βGee, thanks.βΒ
βAnytime,β Toph smiles.Β
She skips another few rocks, getting a longer run each time before you feel something hit your arm. You look down to see itβs one of the pebbles.Β
βItβs your turn,β she says.Β
βI didnβt actually learn this at the academyββ
βSomehow, I think youβll survive.β She jabs her elbow into your side and you huff a laugh. βNow do it.βΒ
You throw it at the lake, a flick of your wrist, and it skips an astounding two times before the water swallows it up.Β
βGreat,β you say. βThe blind girl is better than me at everything.βΒ
βDonβt feel bad. Iβm better than most people at everything.βΒ
βAnd so humble, too.βΒ
βWhatβs the point in that?βΒ
βWell, how are you so good at earthbending?β Itβs the question that has been bugging you since the first time you saw her, and itβs become incessant since you found out she was blind. βHow are you so good at everything?βΒ
βI see using my earthbending,β she says, and you donβt think youβve ever heard anything cooler. βI feel the vibrations in the ground, so I donβt even need my eyes. I can see better than anyone with eyes, reallyβI can feel every fire ant on this corner of the island. And that thereβs a maggot slug right on your hand.βΒ
You look down to see one crawling over your fingers and scream as you throw it off. Toph dissolves into raucous laughter and you manage to crack a smile, hand still shaking. You hope those fire ants decide to stay far, far away from you.Β
βSo the badgermoles taught you that?β you ask.Β
βGood memory,β she says with a nod. βEveryone underestimates me because they think Iβm just a helpless blind girl. It would be more annoying if it didnβt work in our favor every single time.β
βThatβs cool.β A beat passes and you pull your knees up to your chest, passing a glance at Toph. βYou really donβt hate me?βΒ
Toph shrugs. βIβve gotten to pummel you every time weβve fought. How could I hate you?βΒ
Your laugh is actually something genuine. Youβre eternally thankful for this hardheaded blind girl that is doing a pretty good job brute-forcing her way through life.Β
βMaybe you can convince the others to feel the same way,β you say.Β
βOh please, they donβt hate you,β Toph says. βAangβs too nice to hate anyone, Sokkaβs heart speeds up every time he looks at you, and Katara saved your lifeββ
She keeps going, but youβre still stuck on the second one. You feel your face heat and you have the sudden urge to dunk your head in the water to stop it. Does that mean Sokka doesnβt hate you? Could he actuallyβ¦
Spirits, could he actually like you? Like, want you to be his friend, kind of like?Β
The thought is overwhelming. You havenβt made a friend since Zuko. Azula took up most of your time, and you hate all your fatherβs soldiers, and your brothers donβt count. Friends that donβt throw fire at you or threaten you into submission is a foreign concept. But it sounds really, really nice.Β
You tune back into Toph when she elbows you again, and you rub the sore spot as she smiles at the ground.Β
ββso you donβt have to worry, because Aangβs word is worth a lot here. Especially to Katara.βΒ
βI noticed that,β you say. βTheyβre pretty close, huh?βΒ
βKataraβs the one that found him, so I think they like to think they have a connection.β She shakes her head with a huff. βIt all gives me oogies.βΒ
βI think itβs nice,β you say. βTheyβre sweet to each other.βΒ
βYouβve been here for a few days. It gets old after a few months.βΒ
You smile inwardly. βThanks for coming down here, Toph. It wasβ¦ really nice talking with someone like you.βΒ
βSomeone totally cool?βΒ
βSomeone I know wonβt lie to me,β you say wryly. βBut that too.βΒ
βNo problem, princess,β she says. βAnytime you need to be taken down a peg, my door is open.β
You roll your eyes but your smile only grows. βYouβre going to keep calling me that, arenβt you?βΒ
βYouβre the best guesser Iβve ever met.β
-
The rest of the night goes by quickly enoughβthe next day does too, for that matter. Katara was kind enough to scrounge up a fifth bowl your first night spent consciously so you could eat dinner with them, and though it was weird at first, itβs not as bad nowβespecially after your talk with Toph.Β
What she said about Sokka keeps popping into your head, though, and it takes everything in you to not glance over at him every chance you get. If anyone finds out that the thought of him makes your skin turn hot as magma, you think youβll actually pass away.Β
Itβs unlike anything youβve ever felt before, so naturally you decide to ignore it in the hopes itβll go away. Youβre just not used to someone being as nice as Sokka is to you without demanding something in return. Thatβs it.Β
But theyβre all warming up to you, it seems. Aang and Toph talk to you like youβre a normal person, Sokka is too nice to understand, and Katara isnβt openly suspicious of your every move anymore. Toph even makes you your own rock tent after Katara begrudgingly admits she doesnβt think youβll run anymore.Β
You donβt even know where you would go if you did.Β
Youβre thankful for it, though. The nightmares hit you in full force out here, and you have to wipe away tears when you wake up at the break of dawn. You barely get any sleep, but itβs nothing new. You manage.Β
You always do.Β
One afternoon, youβre laying on your back in the grass staring up at the sky. You used to cloud-watch with Ty Lee every perfect summer day, when they were at their fluffiest and you could lay in the grass for hours. You stopped when your father forgot the concept of free timeβout here, you have nothing but.Β
You sigh. Everything reminds you of what you left behindβwho you betrayed. Katara and Aang are making lunch together after a session of waterbending, so at least theyβre leaving you alone. But then you hear Katara scoff, and you glance over.Β
Sokka Toph walk in together, each holding a sizable bag of gold pieces. Your eyebrows rise. Theyβre pretty good scammersβand Sokkaβs hawk is surprisingly well behaved today.Β
βWhere have you two been?β Katara questions, planting her hands on her hips when she stands. βOff scamming again?βΒ
βYes, we were,β Toph says.Β
βAnd I suppose you donβt think what youβre doing is dangerous at all?β
Toph keeps her back turned. βNo, I donβt.βΒ
βReally?βΒ
βYes, really.β
βWell, then.β Katara pulls out a rolled piece of paper from her waistband, and you freeze when it opens. βWhatβs this?β
βI donβt know!β Toph exclaims, motioning at her eyes. βI mean, what is it with you people? Iβm blind!βΒ
βItβs a wanted poster of you!β Katara says. βThe Runaway. Is that what youβre called now?β
Your eyes dart across the clearing to Sokka as she continues on, but he shakes his head. You frown, having no idea what it means, but he just shakes his head even harder. What does that Β mean? Sokka gave Toph her wanted poster, and you kept your own, so if Katara has Tophβs, then she looked through Tophβs things.Β
Did Katara look through your things too? Does Katara know youβre a runaway bride?
Kataraβs shouts bring you back to reality. You get up and go over to where Sokka and Aang are sitting together to see Toph stomping away from an angry Katara.Β
βDonβt you walk away from me when Iβm talking to you!β she calls.Β
βOh really, Mom?β Toph mocks, turning. βWhat are you doing to do? Send me to my room?β
βI wish I could!β Katara exclaims.Β
βWell, you canβt! Because youβre not my mom, and youβre not their mom.β She gestures over at the three of you.
βI never said I was!βΒ
βNo, but you certainly act like it!βΒ
You shoot Aang a desperate look. βDo something!βΒ
His eyes widen as he lowers his voice. βWhat am I supposed to do?β
βYouβre the Avatar! Bring peace to the world!β
βso stop acting like you can tell me what to do!β Toph is in the middle of saying, jabbing her finger at Katara. βI can do whatever I want!β
Katara stares at her. Her eyes dart away as she lowers her head for a second, and she looks unsure when she speaks.Β
βI donβt act that way.β She looks at her brother. βSokka, do I act motherly?βΒ
His eyes widen slightly as he raises his hands. βIβm staying out of this one.βΒ
βWhat do you think, Aang? Do I act like a mom?βΒ
You give him a look, and he shakes his head as he rubs his eye with one hand. βNo, Iββ
βStop rubbing your eye and speak clearly when you talk!βΒ
βYes, maβam,β he says, and Kataraβs shoulders slump.Β
βI bet I know what youβre gonna say,β she mumbles with a half-hearted glance at you.Β
βYou saved my life,β you say. βI donβt really have any right to tell you how to act.βΒ
Toph rolls her eyes and starts walking off. βI canβt be around you right now.βΒ
βWell, I canβt be around you!β Katara counters. She storms off in the opposite direction, leaving the three of you alone.Β
Aang frowns. βWell, that couldβve gone better.β
Sokkaβs hawk squawks and he sighs as he rests his arms on his knees. βI know, Hawky. Why canβt they just get along?βΒ
βDoes this happen a lot?β you ask, looking in each direction. Toph has created another rock tent, and Katara is sitting by the stream with her shoulders hunched.Β
βNot really,β Sokka says. βBut Katara and Toph are the most stubborn people I know, so they always end up clashing like this every once and a while. They get over it pretty quickly.βΒ
Aang frowns. βDidnβt Toph leave the group last time they fought?β
βThatβs because we were sleep deprived,β Sokka says, looking at you. βThanks, by the way.βΒ
You nod. βAnytime.βΒ
βWell, what are we supposed to do now?β Aang questions. βI hate seeing Katara so upsetββΒ
βWe know,β Sokka interrupts dryly. His eyes wander from his sister to his friend as he thinks, then his eyes light up. βOh, I know! Iβm gonna send Katara a note and say itβs from Toph, who wants to apologize, then everyone will be friends again.βΒ
Aang smiles. βI gotta say Sokka, you continue to impress me with your ideas.β
βOh, can Toph write through her earthbending too?β you ask. βThatβs impressive.βΒ
Sokka frowns. β...Can she write with her earthbending?βΒ
Aang sighs. βI canβt believe we forgot Toph couldnβt write.βΒ
β...Maybe you should just talk to them,β you say. βI think thatβll go better.βΒ
βWow,β Aang says your name, βmaybe you should be our new idea guy!βΒ
βDonβt even joke about that, Aang!β Sokka shouts, shooting to his feet. βI will go talk to Toph.β
You chuckle as Sokka walks over to where sheβs sitting, and you glance over at Aang. βThink itβll work?βΒ
βI hope so,β he sighs. βI just feel bad that we started this mess with our scams. Katara just wants to help, thatβs all.β
βI can tell how much she cares about you all,β you say. βI know Iβve only been here for a few days, but Iβve gotten a lot of bruises from that care.βΒ
Aang chuckles and shakes his head. βWeβve been through a lot together. We almost die together every week, but we pull through. Katara and Toph fight, but they always make up. They love each other. We all do.βΒ
You sit in silence for a while as his words sink in. Itβs so wildly different from your friendships, where what Azula says goesβand if you make her upset, then youβd better grovel at her feet before she starts shooting fire at you. Itβs not really a hangout with Azula if someone doesnβt come away with scorch marks.Β
βI have a question,β you say.Β
βWhat is it?β Aang asks.Β
You pause, shifting in your seat as you look over where Sokka and Toph are talking on a cliff. Katara walked off to the water, but you hope sheβs doing okay. You lick your dry lips then manage to form the words.Β Β
βWhyβd you save me?β
He frowns. βBecause youβre a human being.βΒ
βCome on,β you say.Β
βYou were a human being that needed help,β Aang says. βIt doesnβt matter what you did to me. You needed help, so I helped you.βΒ
You shake your head, unable to look at him anymore. βBut I donβt deserve that.βΒ
βYes,β he says gently, βyou do.βΒ
You tip your head back to the sky, hoping your tears will go back where they came from. βThatβs not right, though. Iβ I didnβt earn it. I havenβt helped you at all.βΒ
βThatβs not really how we operate here,β he says with a slight laugh. βWeβre on a mission to save the world. Anyone we can help along the way is part of that mission. That includes you.βΒ
βI just donβt get it,β you say lowly. βAzula would kill you on the spotββ
βBut you havenβt,β he interrupts. βAnd you wonβt. And thatβs what matters most, I think.βΒ
A tear breaks loose and Aang graciously doesnβt mention it when you finally manage to look at him.Β
βThank you,β you say quietly. βYouβre kinder than I expected you would be.β
βI get that a lot.β
βAnd a lot younger,β you say. βYouβre really only 12?βΒ
β112, actually,β he says. βBut Iβve been told I donβt look my age.βΒ
You huff a laugh and Aang smiles. Toph and Sokka are making their way back by now, the sun steadily setting in the distance.Β
βYou have a place with us for as long as you want,β Aang says gently. βI hope you know that.βΒ
Your heart clenches a bit as you give him a small smile and a nod. You donβt know how you got lucky enough for the Avatar to be a young monk with endless empathy.Β
-
The night passes quickly into the next day. Katara and Toph have set off on what she dubbed the ultimate scam, and Sokka has been pacing back and forth since they left. His sister is the only waterbender youβve ever met, but you know she has to be one of the best out thereβand you think Toph is maybe the best earthbender in the world. You donβt know what could possibly hurt them.Β
But in the past hour, Aang has taken Sokkaβs place, whoβs too busy admiring his hawk as you clumsily stitch up a hole in your shawl. Youβre too embarrassed to ask Katara, so you just learned by watching her from a distance and filling in the rest of the blanks. Itβs going worse than expected.Β
βDo you really think this scam of theirs should be taking this long?β Aang asks.Β
βI was just wondering the same thing,β Sokka sighs. βWeβd better check it out.β
He stands, then looks at you expectantly. βWell?βΒ
βOh!β you exclaim. βIβ I get to come too?βΒ
βOf course,β Sokka says. He looks down at his hawk and the flying lemur and jerks his thumb back at the sky bison. βAppaβs in charge.βΒ
Appa. So thatβs his name. At least you now know who to curse for all those bruises.Β
You break the thread from the spool and hurriedly tie a knot before you slip it over your shoulders and rush after Sokka and Aang.Β
Soon enough youβre walking through a strangely deserted town, heads on a swivel as you search for their friends.Β
βWhere do you think they might be?β Sokka asks.Β
βWhere do you think anyone is?β Aang questions, spinning in a small circle as he looks out at the empty streets. Suddenly, you feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and you stop right by the statue of Fire Lord Ozai. All you hear is the rush of fire from his fists.
βGuysββΒ
βWatch out!βΒ
You barely process Aangβs shout before heβs airbending all three of you out of the way of an explosionβyou drop to the ground and clamp your hands against your ears to try and protect yourself from the noise, but when Sokkaβs mouth moves, you hear nothing but ringing. Cracked pieces of tile have flown all over and clouds of acrid black smoke fill the town square.Β
Sokka grabs your wrist and pulls you behind the fire fountain with him and Aang, where you watch a half-metal man hop down from the rooftops. He crushes the street where he lands, inhales as he looks at the three of you, and then a beam shoots from a tattooed eye on his forehead. The three of you throw yourselves out of the way just before the spot you were standing explodes.Β
Your eyes are watering from the smoke and a few projectile pebbles have embedded themselves in your skin, but when Sokka yells to run, you run.Β
βThis canβt be,β you pant to yourself as you race through the empty streets. βIβ I thought they were myths!β
Sokka grabs your arm as you turn a sharp corner as the firebender continues pursuing you, blowing up the town behind you. One particularly strong explosion sends the three of you airborneβyou and Sokka knock over a wheelbarrow, and he wraps his arms around you to shield you as you hit the ground hard.Β
Sokka says your name frantically. βAre you okay?βΒ
βFine,β you rush, and his eyes widen a bit.Β
βWow. Youβre super warm.βΒ
βItβs a firebender thing!βΒ
Sokka helps you up as Aang joins you behind the upturned wheelbarrow, pushing his headband back into place.Β
βAre you guys okay?β he questions desperately.Β
βNot as good as this guy!β Sokka exclaims, moving his finger away from his forehead a few times. βHe shoots fire from his brain! How can we beat that?βΒ
Aang says your name and they both look at you. βYouβre from the Fire Nationβ do you know how to beat him?βΒ
You huff an incredulous laugh. βIβ Iβve read about it in school, but I always thought that it was just make-believe! There were stories about special firebenders who could shoot a concentrated blast of chi from their foreheadββ
βWell, his chi feels pretty real to me!β Sokka exclaims.Β
βWe should split up,β Aang says. βHe canβt chase all three of us.βΒ
You nod as Sokka groans. βYou better not get blasted, Aang!βΒ
βAs long as you donβt either.βΒ
The three of you break just before the wagon explodes, sending wooden shards flying all over. Your heart pounds in your ears while you run as fast as you can. You see Aang running nimbly across the rooftops, drawing the firebenderβs ire away from you and Sokkaβbut then he slams against the statue fountain and falls to the ground.Β
βAang!β you cry out.Β
You sprint towards the Avatar and the firebender, flipping with fire at your feet to send a powerful blast at him. He dodges and glares mutinously at you, about to blast you to smithereensβbut then a huge block of ice encases his head, and he stumbles away from both of you.
You whip around to see Katara in a fighting stance with Toph and Sokka on either side, and you let out the biggest sigh of relief.Β
βGet him up!β she yells. βWe have to go!βΒ
You nod and hurry over to Aang to help him back to his feet, half-dragging half-carrying him along with you as you race to catch up to the group. You hear Toph cover your exit with a rock followed by a massive explosion, but it doesnβt hit you so you donβt really care.Β
βHey, wait!β Sokka shouts. βI have the perfect name for that guyβ Combustion Man!βΒ
βGood job, Sokka,β Toph pants. βNow letβs get out of here before Combustion Man catches us.β
βSee?β he grins as you turn a corner. βIt fits so well!βΒ
You look down at Aang, whose keeping pace with you all surprisingly well for the beating he just took. βAre you okay? That was a nasty fall.β
βIβll be fine,β he breathes with a wry smile. βAirbenders are light on our feet.βΒ
You roll your eyes but canβt help your own smile as you continue running for your life. You make it back to camp in record speed and throw everything haphazardly into bags, but when theyβre all getting on Appa, you pause.Β
βWhat are you doing?β Aang calls from Appaβs head as he gets the reins together. βWe have to go!β
βIβ I didnβt know if youβd want me to come with you,β you stammer. βIβm Fire Nation andββΒ
βWho cares?β Toph interrupts. βDo you still want to be here when Combustion Man shows up for vengeance?βΒ
βYouβre coming with us,β Sokka says, βend of story.βΒ
Your eyes flick over to Katara, who sighs after a long moment.Β
βYouβre a trail right to us if you stay here,β she says. βItβs easier for you to come.βΒ
βSeriously?β you ask, cautiously grateful.Β
βJust get up here before Appa takes off without you.βΒ
You break into a grin, but you yelp as Toph thrusts her fist up and a portion of earth shoots you up into the air right into Appaβs saddle. You land on your hands and knees and stare at her.Β
βWhat is your problem?β you gasp.Β
βItβs faster,β she shrugs.Β
βYip yip!β Aang yells, and you grab onto the saddle as the bison takes off into the sky. You sputter as your hair blows into your face and mouth and eyes.Β
βWelcome to the luxuries of a flying bison,β Sokka says smugly. βIf you ever wondered why you couldnβt track us, this is why.βΒ
βWhat does everyone have against solid ground?β You decide to just deal with the hair in your eyes, too afraid of falling to your death without an iron grip on the saddle. βSailingβs bad enough, but flying?βΒ
βDonβt worry, princess,β Toph says breezily. βIf I can handle it, you can too.βΒ
βYeah,β Katara says with a wry smile. βI thought you were some tough warrior, but you canβt even handle a little flying?βΒ
You groan. βHow do you all do this every day?βΒ
βFlying is great!β Aang calls back. βAnd Appa is the safest bison this side of the skies. You have nothing to worry about."
You think being good is the least rewarding thing you have ever done.
summary: while you try to cope with your enemies being nice to you, toph's scams come to a head.
a/n: we are back babyyyyy took a second but i got a little burnt out from this series after writing 70k in like 2 months lol. crazy that we're already around the halfway point!!! more sokka and more gaang interactions in this part, it's hurting me keeping katara at such a distance but the plot demands it</3 we will get there tho
wc: 7.1k
warning(s): r is sad about her brother's death
βWhy are you pacing like that?βΒ
βIβm not pacing.βΒ
βAangβs right,β Sokka says. βYou are pacing.
