I was one of the boys that Mr. Pickersgill, the cobbler, employed after school to work as shoe-shiners and general assistants. I gulped when I first saw the uniform he expected us to wear, but when he charmingly reassured me that I had the legs to suit the outfit, I obliged. By the second week, the shop was getting very busy leading up to closing time, and several of my friends from school began working here too. We could earn a fair amount in cash tips too, and the pockets on my little shorts were often straining to contain the notes and coins given to us by the kind customers, if we did a good job (which was always expected).
