gonna do my best to articulate this. and let me start with i think the coke brand endorsement is a dramatic oversight at best and a deliberate act of indifference at worst. it is a poor decision, as several of their ambassadorships or public endorsements have been since I’ve started stanning, not just in the last two years.

in saying that, i think some people have a completely unrealistic view of bts’ past activism and any future activism. first of all, a lot of people give the members themselves, frankly, way too much credit. so much of what has came out of their mouths directly is, by definition, apolitical. have they benefited from people ascribing their messages otherwise??? oh absolutely. are they aware of that?? duh. as is art. does that mean they have in any way directly endorsed and/or stood up for a lot of what people parrot they have?? no, not really.

put simply, they may be chronically online and have access to the fastest internet in the world and whatever else people rightfully point out but they are, probably, not in the leftist algorithms like you and your friends are. they don’t have to be. they are millionaire celebrities. i get the impression from past actions that they are, at baseline, updated on the general state of the world. if they aren’t then that’s obviously disappointing too. but i have not deluded myself into thinking they are actively seeing donation links and live views of atrocities on their burner social media accounts like a lot of us have curated.

“but hannah it is not political nor does it require an extensive knowledge of geopolitical history to say genocide is bad and to not endorse brands that are complicit!” i hear you!! i agree!!!! silence in itself is complicity!!!!!!! i just. simply think we have to be realistic. to an extent. and thus when i say idk i think you either need to learn to criticize things normally and/or step away from this thing ur interested in it comes from a place of good. if you genuinely believe a band you once loved has spent 12 years of their career manipulating their audience when in fact they’re terrible, callous, ignorant, privileged pieces of shit in real life…..then i think you maybe need to stop liking the band. that’s all.
