I need to talk about this
I posted about JK's rainbow watch strap a few days ago and a person came into my replies with a slew of nasty comments about him. I've got a fairly thick skin most of the time. I usually delete those comments, block, and move on, but this has been in my head for days and I want to adress it:
One of the derogatory comments was the accusation that JK is gay for pay.
I've come across it a few times before but I curate my content to keep myself sane so i don't see it too often. And I know I can be a little naive, and too trusting of the world, but it's honestly so unbelievable to me at anyone would actually think this.
He's told us so many times how important it is for him to be himself, to live his own life, and to follow his own compass. He consistently shares incredibly personal elements of his life with us.
And this is what he gets back.
It makes me really sad that he trusts army with these vulnerabilities and people still accuse him of being so fundamentally dishonest and corrupt that he'd act out gayness (whatever that means) for money.
Like, do these people honestly believe it? Maybe they do. Maybe they don't. I don't know which is worse.
It's not only the claim that he's so unscrupulous that he would pretend to be gay for ratings or views or whatever, but also the idea that any straight celebrity would pretend to be gay irl. Literally this is not a thing that happens. Because being gay or queer is some of the hardest shit ever and I think the majority of queer people would never choose it (if it was a choice), purely for that reason. There's a reason mental health is so much worse amongst the queer community. This accusation is so messed up I'm struggling to believe anyone could think it was true.
The opposite is true, of course... A huge number of celebs have kept their sexuality hidden and played straight because its safer personally and professionally. No doubt many still do.
And the hurt and damage that happens when people hide their identities is real, and tragic.
The suggestion that JK is acting out being gay gets my blood boiling, but saying he does it for profit or personal gain actually makes me feel ill. He'd have to be incredibly callous and unempathetic. And kinda despicable. And he's none of those things.
Besides the shitty-ness of a person who would do that, being queer is not an advantage for anyone in public life.
Whether they're a politician, actor, or athlete, being gay is not something that usually will raise your chances of getting votes, viewers or fans. The hate, violence, persecution, lack of basic rights, social isolation, feelings of insecurity, etc etc etc that queer people experience is no joke. We all know this. It's hardly an advantage in life.
What the actual fuck. The prejudice behind these comments is vile.
I'm furious, and dismayed and honestly, I'm sad. I'm sad for him and I'm sad for all the queer people who watch him being true to himself, and celebrate that and take courage from it, and then have to see him being vilified for it.
Because of course the accusations come at him when he's with Jimin. Even though their relationship is so carefully downplayed most of the time that they don't even appear in photos together when they're out with all the other members. (Yes Jimin was at the Eiffel Tower)
It's not all that surprising that they steer clear of being seen together, because if it's not JK getting lambasted, it's Jimin.
Sure we see isolated moments of them interacting on stage, but they're honestly few. We get soft looks and tender touches in the behind footage sometimes, but it's low key for a reason.
It's no secret that the world is sadly turning towards conservatism.
Politicians are pushing socially and personally restrictive values that put control and compliance ahead of accepting our natural diversity, and right wing personalities are doubling down on traditionalism. There's no denying the effect of that creeps into all facets of life. But there's also the grotesque tkk and pjm solos who will denigrate JK purely because he doesn't fit their fantasy narrative.
Even though JK says he doesn't care, its demeaning to be subjected to these accusations. It takes a toll.
I wish the people saying this stuff would lose the power of speech, or fall off the edge of the flat earth they probably also believe in.
Or worse, but I'm not going to resort to wishing actual harm on anyone because then I'm no better.
Rant over. I needed to get that off my chest.
If anyone's still reading, thanks for hearing me out.
