Two amusingly(sometimes) mischievous Odysseyians with suppressed daddy issues down, one to go (Jay Smouse. I do miss him terribly. Curse this tedious relisten.)

The more observant among you might have noticed that I race-swapped Curt– if you figured out that it was Curt– and here's a quick explanation for that:

While I did consider that a black Curt might feed into those nasty stereotypes of dysfunctional black families, I figured it made sense for other reasons like the fact that his voice actor is already black, and Odyssey would have a major black kid that doesn't come as a family set (Calhouns & Washingtons), plus he would be the only black kid with a bit of a love interest, fleeting though it may be. Also even with his background he doesn't let it define him, or excuse his very mild troublemaking tendencies, which I suspect wouldn't be the case if they planned for him to be black, but that's just a theory. And those are my reasons, please don't come for me, thank you.

Jules has definitely run away before. She was a kid who acted out for attention, because otherwise her mom (and whoever her mom’s boyfriend/husband was at the time) would ignore her entirely. One time, she finally came home after having been gone for almost a week, and Jan didn’t even ask where she had been. Jules still tried running away again after that. Even though she knew deep down it wouldn’t ever change anything, it was worth a try to get someone to notice her.

It takes a few months after getting to Odyssey for Jules to start getting desperate again. Maybe it’s around the time she does one of her stupid impulsive things, like setting off the fireworks or crashing the car. She worries that maybe Connie doesn’t love her anymore after what she did. And so she runs away. It’s not as easy as it was in LA, but she manages to hide out in a McDonald’s a few hours away while she figures out what to do next. She sleeps in a movie theatre at the mall and sobs the entire night. The next morning, she reluctantly gets on the bus and goes back to Odyssey. It takes her the entire four-hour ride to think about what to say. She still doesn’t have it figured out by the time she steps onto her street.

Jules gets back to the house and stands on the porch, already somewhat regretting her choice to come back. Before she can do anything with that feeling, the front door flies open and Connie is hugging her tighter than she ever has.

“Oh my goodness, I was so worried. Where were you?”

Connie’s nails dig into Jules’ arms, but Jules doesn’t protest, leaning into her sister’s embrace. When they pull away from each other, they’re both crying.

“I was ready to tear this whole country apart to find you, Jules. I love you so, so much.”

That’s the first time Jules realizes that Odyssey is home now.
