Soo I was writing a post earlier while waiting at the car dealership (oil change) aaaaaand then it got deleted cause I forgot to save it as a draft before closing my phone. So…. I guess I’ll write it ✨again✨.

This is about The Electric Palace. Now, I have some thoughts on some things I’ve been thinking about… and a large part of it has to do with consistency. Sometimes, the Electric Palace is written as the worst most scummy business imaginable, selling batteries that don’t work, faulty transformers, keyboards with missing letters, and fans with misleading features. On the other hand, The Electric Palace is also written as a perfectly normal establishment, selling Christmas lights, lightbulbs, blenders, and even weapons and toys, all of which work wonderfully. Why is this? Is it really just Bart’s bad business practices that drag it down? Probably. But, at the same time, Bart has also been revealed to be quite an excellent manager. Even Edwin comments as such, and in the Elsewhere in Odyssey strips, we learn Bart is the number one seller of Binsai products in entire country, and has one of the most successful Electric Palace locations. So…. Surely it can’t be THAT bad, right?

Oh, and another thing…. This brings me to the topic of discussing how much money the Rathbones have. They are shown to live incredibly cheap, refusing to buy things on many occasions, and are shown dumpster diving for goods more than once in the middle of the night. They are portrayed as “trashy”, poor, with Bart implying things such as them having a very small budget for Christmas gifts.

But…. (Yes, again), is this really the case? In Tornado, a citizen remarks that the Rathbones should not be allowed to stay in the disaster shelter because they have enough money to live in a hotel while their house is being repaired. It is also shown more than once in an episode, Bart mentioning that he has thousands of dollars lying around to use for the plot. He’s always asked where he GOT this money, to which he doesn’t usually answer. I get the impression that Bart is a Scrooge type, being very rich but refusing to spend anything more than necessary. He sacrifices his quality of life (and the quality of life for his family) in order to hold onto those riches.

This is another rather nuanced detail about this family that I feel like most fans don’t think about and consider. Yes it’s a joke that Bart has scammy deals in his store and that Rodney is last wearing ripped clothes, but… why? The evidence suggests this a conscious decision on their part, and I think that’s very interesting.

I’ve thought about this too! Because I recently listened to Hawaii episodes and was like - oh wait the electric palace was the best selling buisness… huh????

My personal theory is something along the lines that they were actually poor before they became owners of the electric palace. Because there was that time period before the palace with them in odyssey. But after they acquired it they suddenly had money and wanted to keep it for themselves.

It’s also funny that you brought up Scrooge because while I was reading this I thought of him too 😂

And for the ripped clothes Rodney did say they were “strategically placed rips” so maybe he’s secretly buying those Balenciaga poor aesthetic clothes [like the “poor” or “dirty” collections in rich brands for some reason]

Yeah, this makes sense!!! I think the Electric Palace definitely gave them their wealth. It became part of Bart’s identity as well and solidified him as a character, too.

As for the clothes, I think the ripped shirt Rodney wears in his You Gotta Be Wise artwork is the only one with intentional rips, all the others are just there cause his clothes are worn out, at least imo. The books also confirm his clothes are quite trashy, which…. Actually makes the idea that he INTENTIONALLY ripped one of his shirts way more funny 😂

Been trying to decide for a while if Rodney has APD (Anti-Social Personality Disorder) or not. What do we think?

I hesitate to put Rodney under ASPD because he seems to seek validation far more than many individuals with ASPD do. a core component of ASPD is an indifference towards others’ emotions, both positive and negative. Rodney frequently tries to get Bart and Doris’s attention and is shut down every. single. time. and he keeps doing it not because he thinks he deserves the attention, but because he wants to be validated and admired. To me that feels more like the other cluster B disorders, mainly NPD or possibly HPD. It’s also possible to display traits of personality disorders without fitting all the criteria, which is why the DSM-VI is potentially moving towards personality disorders as a spectrum (side note: diagnoses can’t account for the whole person, they’re essentially a list of traits that help professionals get a general sense of possible treatment options and are necessary for insurance purposes)

Also just a note as a psych/neuroscience researcher, the Hare checklist is for “psychopathy,” which is a legal/social term distinct from actual diagnosis of any disorders and is used in forensic and criminal psychology, often to assess potential for violence while in custody or during release. The checklist itself assesses traits rather than being actual diagnostic criteria. Outside of forensics, psychopathy as a “condition” in the mental health field is widely considered outdated, as it describes how someone acts without investigating or addressing the internal processes.

All that being said, Rodney definitely does feel somewhere in Cluster B personality disorders to me, probably closer to NPD or HPD from what I remember of his character!

All good points!!! I’ve considered most of this which is why I’ve hesitated to actually put any label of this sort onto him, but being ND myself has made me want to dig a little deeper. I definitely think he’s got SOMETHING going on, but I do agree a lot of what he does is seemingly for validation. I think he does his best to present his act in a way that suggests he’s acting this way because he deserves such attention, but I don’t think that’s true of what he really believes deep down. Psychopathy is also, yes, like you said, not a super legitimate term however I think it’s useful to use from a writing standpoint. Keeping up consistency in characters’ voices, mannerisms and behavior can sometimes be tricky and so having a set of rules for yourself or a checklist with things you want to implement or avoid can be very helpful in my opinion.

So… remember in “A Cheater Cheated” when Rodney mentions that he once got in trouble for “When I put the hamster in the —” before getting cut off?

Uhhhh…….

What was he talking about? What did he DO? And WHY?

Now, my brain being what it is immediately thinks ✨garbage disposal✨, and while that’s probably not what happened it could be. We’ll never know.

Rodney definitely swears, right? I get the joke that he only used words like “dweeb” and “twerp” and whatever, but some people use this as evidence to say that he’s not a threatening or even very “evil” antagonist? That he’s just a complete joke? Like— you people do realize that’s only the case cause the characters CAN’T swear. There’s evidence of him using language the show doesn’t dare to utter, and he’s not the only one. Surely those are actual swear words? Rodney is also the character who has threatened real genuinely horrific violence against kids and adults, nearly killing a man by accident and helping Saul frame Christians and send them to their deaths in the imagination station, framing Tom trying to ruin his life with no remorse, and in the banned episode he’s in— practically trying to give a kid an eating disorder. He does this and we think he’s above swearing? I don’t get it 😂.

ok so this might sound extremely random but I remember there being an episode that Rodney like hung a kid in a tree???? Like Connie walks out of Whits End and there’s a kid in a tree and Connie asks what happened and he said Rodney put him up there. 😭🥀 I have no idea if this actually happened or if it was actually Rodney.

This sounds familiar to me too!

But…. Idk, I’ve listened to all his episodes numerous times and cannot think of a single instance of this happening. The thing closest to it is a scene in A Lamb’s Tale where Rodney films Grady climbing a tree and then falling out of it. Maybe this is something that was mentioned in passing, perhaps by Isaac? Or the animated series? The part with Connie coming out and finding this though is what’s getting me. I can picture that so well— I can hear it. But again, to my knowledge this wasn’t Rodney specifically, or any of the Bones.

I’m going to go do some digging after work though to see if I can find anything else out, unless the mystery is solved before then by someone else.
