Honestly pretty anxious waiting to see how the official English translation will handle Ririka giving exposition about Kirari’s personality and what she considers her sister’s biggest strength in Kakegurui Ch. 94, Part 1. The kanji Ririka uses isn’t flattering for Kirari, but Ririka does immediately give an explanation as to why she thinks about her sister that way. In the end, it takes a loaded word and smooths it out a bit and shows how Kirari approaches tackling her goals.
If nothing else, at least there are some beautiful panels of Ririka this month.
Oh thank GOD they chose an appropriate word: Selfish.
If it had been up to me, I probably would’ve gone with “self-indulgent,” since we’ve already seen tons of evidence for that. Kirari is very hedonistic, and being “self-indulgent” cuts closer to her characterization than “selfish” does. Ririka’s explanation hopefully helps clarify why, in Kirari’s context, that’s her strength.
The term they used in Japanese, ワガママ, has been described in the following way:
It roughly translates to “self-indulgent,” “self-centered,” “selfish,” and “disobedient" in the English language. In Japan, it’s most commonly used to describe a badly behaved child
We’ve known Kirari pursues her desires with relentless tenacity. Kakegurui Love explicitly mentions that she is a person who is “too true to her heart’s desires,” which falls in line with the use of ワガママ.
All of which to say, this chapter’s translation seems accurate! Kirari moved heaven and earth to secure her sister’s independence, Ririka was afraid she’d be abandoned by Mary now that their election bid is over, and Ririka agreed to help Mary come out on top in the future.
