Hey @doczombie I miss you & I love you
Why did Splogger Elodie spend the entirety of Hamilton taking careful notes and weeping openly into the shoulder of the stranger next to her? So that she could do a little recon mission and gift you beautiful people with Ht the next-best thing: A TEXT RECAP. It’s no live performance, but we think you’ll agree that it’s basically just as good.

how to take meaningful notes
this post is based on this ask I received from @perfectnoteist! The notes I will be using in this post will be from my AP Calculus AB course from the last school year.
When I take notes for classes, I have two different sets of notes. I have in-class notes and I have textbook/worksheet notes. I know a lot of people like to consolidate their notes into one set, but I learned that it was easier to study from two sets.
in-class notes
1. Figure out what type of paper you like to write on. I like to write on college ruled notebook paper (loose leaf) because it allows me to get more information one one sheet of paper.
2. Figure out what you like to write with. I like to write with pencil in math classes and science classes, and pen in literature and history based classes.
3. Figure out a simple way to style your in-class notes. I like to write in two columns for math, because I learned that I can get a lot more notes and information on a page. Most other classes I write in one column.
4. Sit in a place that makes you comfortable and allows you to listen. Not the very front, and also not the very back.
5. Do not try to use colorful pens and pencils. Maybe have one highlighter to highlight something really important. I typically just use a pencil or a pen for in-class notes.
determining what information is important:
1. Do not just copy the information down from what’s written on the board or slide. Copy down what is important to the course and the material. Listen to the teacher, they typically let you know what you need to write down on the slide or from the board.
2. Listen to your teacher. Sometimes they provide information that’s not listed on the board or screen. This is where a lot of students mess up. You have to actually listen to the teacher too.
3. It’s okay to write down a little too much. Instead of worrying about if you needed to write it down, sometimes write it down just in case. Not all the time, but if you think you might need to know it, do so.
4. Do not write down more than two examples. Two examples is plenty, especially if you have resources that provide more examples. If not a third may be required.
5. Common sense. Common sense tells you that if it’s something you’ve never seen before, you probably need to take note of it.
6. Do not put multiple lectures from different days on the same sheet of paper. Trust me.
7. DATE EVERYTHING.
textbook/worksheet notes
These are the notes that are colorful and pretty and I took my time on. I may use two or three different colors to craft these notes. But I still keep it pretty basic, since too many colors can make it a bit disorienting.
tips:
1. Let your in-class notes guide you. If your textbook is a supplement, only take notes on the information that you learned in your class. Otherwise you’ll be taking notes on information that you won’t need.
2. Although, if you teacher told you to read from certain pages, take notes on all the information.
3. Do not copy word from word. This will not help you learn. Write in your own words, and you will learn meaningfully.
4. Label your textbook notes by section. Then go back to your class notes and write the corresponding sections next to your in-class notes. This is very helpful for reference.
5. In your binder, put your class notes first, then your textbook notes. Repeat for each lesson/section. It helps that both are in the same place when it comes time to study.
Sorry this post is kind of all over the place, but I hope it helps!!!
