The Stubborn Child chapter 6
Johnnyâs mouth hung open in shock, his eyes filling up with tears. He had no idea why, but this was the last straw for him that day. He was usually better at keeping himself together, but for some reason, this of all things tipped his emotions over the edge. How could Nicholas have kept the fact that he had 3 children from him, his own brother? He didnât want Diego to see him cry for the second time that day, heâd call him weak, so he quickly wiped his eyes and shook off all the thoughts of Nicholas. Gyro noticed the look on Johnnyâs face and wrapped his arm around his shoulder to comfort him/ Johnny looked up at the taller man then at the ground, blushing furiously. âI-I think we all understand now, right guys?â Johnny asked.
The others nodded again.
"Great!" Margaret said, trying to bring the attention back to her noticing his face as well.
"So, umm⊠What now?â Hot Pants inquired, still not entirely sure why Diego had dragged her here.
"I think this is the part where you go away." Margaret said glaring at Diego.
âI agree, however, Iâm not leaving alone!â With that, he slung Margret over his shoulder and bolted out the door, forgetting Hot Pants in the room.
Hot Pants blinked, still needing to process what had just happened. "Did he-"
âYup.â Johnny answered before she even finished.
"So are we going to go get her or..?" Gyro asked.
Johnny sighed. "Did you really just ask that?"
"Well-"
"Yes. Gyro. The answer is yes."
Hot Pants giggled. âWow, you two sure do argue a lot for racing partners. Honestly your spats sound more like loverâs quarrels but the both of you are too oblivious to know why I mentioned that.â
"Did you not hear the question he just asked?!"
âYou two fight like my parents! This is absolutely hilarious!â
" Are we going to get Margaret or not?" Gyro interrupted.
"Yes, but what do you want me to do, get up and chase Diego down!?â
Gyro went red in embarrassment. âUh, well, I mean, I think we both wish you could but-"
"I'm going to stop you there. Itâd be in all of our best interests for you not to finish that thought."
Gyro sighed before picking Johnny up and placing him in his wheelchair, the smaller of the two pouting the whole time.
Meanwhile, in the lobby, Margret was putting up quite a fight but to no avail, Diego had a tight grip on her and wasnât letting her go until he got what he wanted. Margret rolled her eyes. âCan you put me down now?â She huffed.
âThereâs not a chance in the world that Iâd do that! Well, not until Johnny apologizes to me at leastâŠâ
âWhy do you want that? I was the one who made you mad.â
"Today? Sure. Every other day of this race? Not so much.â
âOh really? How did he anger you then?â
âDo you really want me to list every single way?â
Margret smirked. âGo for it, Iâm not going anywhere.â
âYou little-â Diego sighed. First of all, whenever Iâm trying to have a snack, he always yells, âyouâre not supposed to eat rocks you stupid dinoâ, and I say, âmate, just shut up!' Then-"
Margret burst into a fit of laughter. âI didnât think youâd actually do it! This is too good!â
"Nobody actually gives a list of things unless they're stupid but I meanâŠ"
Diego growled under his breath.
"Wait, did you just growl?"
âWhat of it?â
"That's hilarious!"
Diego grumbled but didnât respond for fear of letting this little girl know that she was making him angry. Margret snickered. âWhatâs wrong? Am I making you mad?â She said mockingly.
"O-Of course not!"
"Really? Because it seems like I am."
Just as Diego was formulating a response, he heard the elevator door slide open. He whipped around to see who was inside of it, gasping when he saw his mortal enemy. He quickly debated whether to run or not but decided it wasnât worth it. As soon as Johnny was close enough, he plopped Margret onto his lap. He then yelled, âJust take her! I donât care anymore!â as he ran away.
Gyro stood there in shock.
"Well, I saw that coming." Johnny said, turning around.
"So that's why you didn't seem worried!"
Margret feigned sadness. "You weren't worried about me?!"
âI was!â Gyro exclaimed.
Margaret and Johnny started laughing. Gyro chuckled slightly. âYour mood sure changed quickly!â
Johnny was smiling, he didnât realize it, but he had a sincere smile on his face. âYeah, I guess it did.â
Gyro stared at the adorable sight before him, wondering why he had never seen Johnny like this before. Margaret, wondering why he was staring at her uncle, turned to look at him and in shock exclaimed "Wait, you can smile?!"
âI guess. Why do you ask?â
âSeriously? Are you ok?!â
âWhat? I donât get it.â
"You need help!"
Johnnyâs smile faltered. âWhy?! I'm so confused!â
âAlright, that's enough!" Gyro interrupted, grabbing the little girl and putting his hand over her mouth.
âWhat the heck is up with yâall?!â
"Nothing!"
âOk..?â
Margret pulled Gyroâs hand off of her mouth and said, âAh, I love the smell of lies!â
Gyro blushed sheepishly. "Lies? What lies?"
âWe both know exactly what I mean.â
"No, I don't." Gyro said, putting Margaret down.
"Wait, did you leave Hot Pants in the room alone with my bird?! Margaret said, closing the elevator door.
Gyro sighed. âAlright, youâre got two options. Either I leave you down here while I go get Margret or, you probably wonât like this one, I carry you up the stairs and we solve the problem together. You pick.â
"Do you really think you can handle that alone?"
âYes..?â
"No."
âWell then, I guess Iâm carrying you!â
Johnny sighed. âFine. Letâs go.â
Gyro smiled and scooped Johnny up out of his wheelchair and carried him up to their room. They raced up the stairs and when they reached their door, Johnny pushed it open. The pair expected to find a full-on war when they arrived, instead, however, they found Margret sitting on her bed, holding her bird, and talking jovially to Hot Pants. Gyroâs jaw dropped. âJohnny, am I seeing what I think Iâm seeing?â
âDepends. Whatâdya think youâre seeinâ?â
"You know what? Forget it. Letâs just see what theyâre talking about.â
âWhatever.â
Gyro giggled. âThatâs the most enthusiasm Iâve heard from you in a while!â
Johnny sighed. âUh-huh.â
Gyro grinned and plopped Johnny on the bed beside Diegoâs abandoned partner then sat down next to him. âWhatâre we talking about? Seems interesting!â
Margret smiled. âNot much really. Weâre just swapping funny stories.â
Gyro raised an eyebrow. âStories about what?â
âYou guys!â Margret chuckled.
âAnd Diego,â Hot Pants added.
Now Johnny was interested. âWell, donât let us get in the way. Feel free to keep goinâ.â
Gyro chuckled. âI might have a few stories about Johnny I can contribute.â
Johnny slapped his hand over the Italianâs mouth. âOh no, you donât! Not before I tell some about you!â
So basically,,, I woke up early this morning and randomly said this when I thought about giorno: "Oh, golden experience? Sorry, I only heard Adverse Childhood Experience-" and Idk why???? Idk if you do submissions for quotes but here,,,

The Stubborn Child Chapter Five
Margret said nothing, her only response was a frustrated groan. As soon as the sound left her mouth, something began to materialize behind her. Before anyone could get a good look at it, she disappeared. The next thing they knew, the bathroom door slammed and locked. Johnny crawled over to investigate. He pressed his ear to the door, straining to hear what was going on inside. The only thing he could hear was a strange noise in a voice he didnât quite recognize. It was something like âuro uroâ. Johnny sat there for a moment, confused at what he had just heard. He thought about what it could be for a moment before he realized what it was; a stand cry. He made his way back over to Gyro to tell him what he had heard. âMargret has a stand?!â Gyro asked, bewildered.
âI think soâŠâÂ
"You think so? What do you mean you think so?"
âItâs not like I saw it or anything! I just heard something through the door and saw that blurry thing behind her before she disappeared!â
âDo you think she might be an enemy stand user?â
âSheâs 10!â
âSheâs smart though!â
âBut sheâs not evil!â
âIâm not saying sheâs fully evil, Iâm just saying she might be smart enough to accept payment to bump us off or something!â
âYou make it sound like sheâs in a gang or something! I donât know why, but I trust her.â Johnny said, having completely forgotten the conversation theyâd had the night before.
âOh, are you showing feelings now Mr. I-donât-care? Whatâs so special about her? It took you forever to trust me and you trust her after a day?!â
âWhoâs jealous of a kid now?â Johnny thought.
âWell? Are going to answer me?â
âI- Well⊠Uh⊠I donât-â
Diego interrupted. âWhat is going on here?!â
âNone of your business!â Johnny snapped.
âUgh, fine! This is no fun anyway!â Diego huffed before stomping out the door and slamming it behind him. (plot twist Diego is lestening through the door)
âNow that heâs gone,â Gyro whispered, âanswer my question.â
âWellâŠâ Johnny trailed off, trying to remember why he trusted Margret so quickly, then it all came flooding back to him. âBecause sheâs my niece!â
Gyro froze. The conversation from the night before was coming back to him bit by bit. âWait, are you sure?â
âNot entirelyâŠâ
âYou know what? Iâm going to ask her right now.â
Gyro placed himself as close to the door as he could with Johnny sitting in front of it. âMargret?â He asked. âMay I come in?â
A shuffling sound came from behind the door followed by the click of the lock. Gyro took that as a yes and opened the door. âHey. Are you alright?â
Margret was sitting in the bathtub, her face wet with tears. âYeah⊠I just hate it when people fightâŠâ
âIâm sorry.â Gyro sympathized.
She sniffled. âItâs okâŠâ
Gyro smiled comfortingly. He sat down next to the little girl and said, âI have a question if you donât mind me asking.â
Margret sniffed and wiped her eyes with her sleeve. âAlright, go for it.â
Gyro cleared his throat, looked at Johnny for confirmation, then asked, âWhy did your mom send you on this journey?â
She stared at him for a moment before answering. âShe⊠sent me to find my dadâŠâ
âI see.â Gyro replied.
âDo you remember anything about him?â Johnny asked from the main part of the room.
âOnly what Mama told me⊠She says I look just like himâŠâ
Gyro and Johnny looked at each other, mutual understanding flowing between them. Then, Johnny decided to ask another question. âDo you know his name?â
She thought for a moment. âUm⊠Mama always called him NickâŠâ
Johnny felt his heart rising in his throat and tears welling up in his eyes. âWas it short for Nicholas..?â
âI-I think so. Why are you asking me all these questions?â
âBecauseâŠâ Johnny replied. âMy brother Nicholas looked an awful lot like you.â
âWhat do you mean âlookedâ?â Margret asked, slightly afraid of the answer she would get.
âWell, he- uh... passed away a few years ago.â Johnny answered, a single tear sliding down his cheek.
âOhâŠâ This was exactly what she had been afraid of, but what bothered her more was the fact that Johnny was crying. She couldnât believe it. The sight of his tears brought a few of her own burning hot paths down her face and onto her light pink dress.Â
Johnny couldnât believe he was crying either. He should have gotten used to the fact that his brotherâs death was his fault by now, or at least thatâs what he kept telling himself. No matter how many times he told himself that it was him who caused the accident by releasing Danny into the woods, he just couldnât get over the overwhelming sadness it caused him every time he even thought about Nicholas. He took a deep breath and tried to compose himself. âSo⊠I guess that makes you my niece.â
Margret leaped up out of the bathtub and tackled Johnny with the biggest hug he had ever gotten from anyone in his family. âI love you, Uncle Johnny!â
This statement caused more tears to pour from Johnnyâs eyes and onto his nieceâs shoulder. Gyro jumped up to join the hug, accidentally pressing his face into Johnnyâs cheek and leaving a smudge of green lipstick on his racing partner. None of them noticed. They were too busy hugging each other and bawling their eyes out.Â
The Stubborn Child Chapter Four
The next morning, Gyro was the first to wake up. He called room service to order some breakfast for the group and then got out of bed to clean himself up. Once the chocolate almond muffins and coffee had arrived, Gyro woke Johnny up. Johnny groaned and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He slumped back against the pillows and asked, âWhatâs goinâ on? Whyâd you wake me up?â
Gyro laughed. âCanât you smell it? I got breakfast!â
Margret, who had just woken up, giggled and said, "Youâre silly. Just because someone wakes you up doesn't mean something is wrong or something happened."
Johnny huffed. âYou donât know what weâve been through during this race. Weâve been attacked by stand users almost every day! I bet you donât even know what a stand is!â
"I DO!" Margret said, a bit too loudly.
âOh yeah?â Johnny challenged, âExplain stands to me then!â
"A stand isâŠ" Margret started.Â
Johnny interrupted. "That's what I thought!"
"Shhhh!" Margret said.
"Don't shush me!"Â
"Be quiet. I hear something." Margaret said seriously.
"What? I don't hear anything. Are you stalling?"Â Â
Gyro pressed his ear to the door. âSheâs right. Someoneâs out there.â
âWhat? Let me listen!âÂ
Gyro lifted Johnny out of bed and placed him next to the door. After a moment of listening, Johnny backed away. âI canât believe it. Youâre right! I think I know whoâs out there too.â
Margret dove under her bed as Gyro stood up to open the door. There he was, exactly who Johnny thought would be there: Diego Brando. He was mumbling something about framing Johnny for a crime or something like that. Johnny laughed quietly and whispered, âI donât think heâs smart enough to do thatâŠâ
As soon as he said that, Diego whipped around to face the duo, unaware of the child quietly giggling at what Johnny had said under the bed. âWell, well, well, if it isnât my two least favorite people-You!â Diego exclaimed.
âWhat do you want, Dino Boy?â Johnny asked sarcastically.
âWho me? I donât really want much⊠Except to ruin your lives!!!â
Johnny rolled his eyes at this. âYouâre too stupid to be able to do that.â
Diego gasped, horribly offended by Johnnyâs remark. âYouâre no smarter than, oh I donât know, a ten-year-old!â
"Do you think he knows?" Gyro whispered to Johnny.
"If he wasn't so stupid, he probably would know, but since he is so dumb, he probably doesn't know about the kid under the bed. Heâs so dumb he still wouldn't know if I told him." Johnny whispered back.
"I'm right here!" Diego yelled.
Margret burst into loud, genuine laughter. She laughed so hard she started crying.
"Who is that?â Diego inquired.
Gyro hurriedly closed the door most of the way. âNobody. Why do you ask?â
Diego raised an eyebrow. âYouâre obviously lying. Why donât you just tell me the truth? It canât be that bad.â
âDid I say it was nobody? I meant to say itâs someone with no body⊠Uh⊠It was a ghost! Our room is haunted!â
âAre you kidding me?! How stupid do you think I am?â
Johnny pipped up. âVery.â
âNO ONE ASKED YOU JOESTAR!!!â Diego shouted loud enough for the entire hotel to hear.
âYou kinda didâŠâ Gyro said under his breath.
âSHUT YOUR MOUTH!!! I DONâT CARE!!! JUST TELL ME WHAT THE NOISE WAS!!!â
âWhy do you even care?!â Johnny asked.
âI donât know, why were you walking around town with a kid? Did you have a kid Joestar?â
âNo! Idiot! Iâm not old enough for thatâŠâÂ
âI mean, technically you are but sheâd have to be one or youngerâŠâ Gyro added.
âShut up!â Johnny yelled.
âIf thereâs nobody other than you in there, why donât you let me in?â Diego inquired.
âWhy would we let you in? Werenât you just muttering about framing me or something?â Johnny asked.
âWait, framing you?â Gyro interrupted. âFor what?â
âKIDNAPPING PROBABLY!"
âAh-ha!â Diego shouted. âSo you do have a kid with you!â
Johnny attempted to explain. "Who said we actually had a kid here? I just said thatâs probably the crime you would frame me for.âÂ
âWhy would I frame you for kidnapping if you donât have a kid with you?!â
"Because youâre an imbecile!"
âIâm the imbecile?! Really?â
âYeah, Dino Boy! I said it! Whatâre you gonna do about it?â Johnny taunted.
Diego shoved the door open and burst inside. "You wanna go!?"Â
âBring it!â Johnny yelled.
Gyro stepped between them and held out his arms to keep them apart. âWoah woah woah! Not in the hotel room! Come on, guys! Do you know how much we would have to pay if you two damaged anything?âÂ
"Oh yeah." Johnny said.
âI guess you didnât think about that, huh?â Gyro inquired, slightly annoyed.
Johnny looked down, embarrassed. âI didnâtâŠâ
Gyroâs expression softened. âItâs ok. Just donât break anything, alright?â
âYeah⊠okâŠâ
Gyro and Johnny stared at each other, completely oblivious to the world around them. While they were lost in each otherâs eyes, Diego began to search the room. First, he looked under the nightstand. Nothing there. Next, under Gyro and Johnnyâs bed. No luck. Then he checked the bathroom. Nada. Finally, he looked under Margretâs bed. âJackpot!âÂ
Johnny and Gyro snapped out of their âstaring contestâ and whipped around to face Diego. âWhat in the world are you doing?!â Johnny shouted.
âProving that you do have a child here in your room!â Diego replied.
âI⊠I have no idea what youâre talking about.âÂ
"I think you do." Diego answered.Â
Gyro chimed in. "Mmm⊠I think not."
Diego grabbed Margretâs ankle and dragged her out from under the bed. "Then who is this?"
âI don't see anyone. Youâre seeinâ things!â Johnny challenged.
"AM NOT!" Diego yelled.Â
Margaret rolled her eyes at their childish fight, then said, "Will you two stop being such babies? Youâre acting like a bunch of preschoolers who didnât get the juice they wanted!"
"Am not!" Diego exclaimed.
"No⊠she's right. You definitely are." Johnny said.
"I'm pretty sure she was talking about both of you." Gyro chimed in.
"I was." Margret said, standing up.Â
Diego walked to the door but then he heard Johnny mumble, "Idiot."Â
He flung himself around so that he was face to face with Johnny. "Really?!"
Right when they were about to start yelling at each other again, they heard a frustrated voice coming from the back of the room. "Will you two cut it out?!?!"Â
Johnny and Gyro sat there in shock. They'd never heard her so mad. Diego just stood there confused. The room was dead silent. After a few moments of awkward silence, Gyro piped up. âUh, Margret? Are you ok?â
The Stubborn Child Chapter Three
The group started off farther into town to search for an inn, Gyro in the lead with Johnny trailing slightly behind. After a bit of looking, they came across the Stardust Hotel, a nice hotel on the other side of the city from where they had started. They tied up their horses out front and went inside to book a room. The lobby was quite grand. It had marble floors, nice chairs around a fireplace, a big chandelier in the middle of the lobby, and lots of greenery scattered around tastefully. Gyro set Johnny down in one of the chairs by the fire and went to the reception desk to check them in.Â
They took the elevator up to their room on the third floor. Once they got out of the elevator, Margret clung to Gyroâs leg. The Neapolitan looked down at her confusedly. âWhat are you doing?â
âHitching a ride!â She replied jovially.
Gyro shrugged and continued down the hall to their room. He opened the door, walked into the room, and plopped Johnny down onto the bed. Now that he had his hands free, he turned to Margret, who was still firmly wrapped around his leg like a koala. âCould you please get off my leg now?â
No answer. He looked down to find the wee one fast asleep, still clinging to him as if her life depended on it. He smiled softly before gently prying her off of him and tucking her into the other bed in the room. Once she was all snug in her bed, Gyro pulled off his boots and stretched out next to Johnny. He put his arm around the younger manâs shoulders and pulled him closer. âSo, are you feeling better now that you can lie down comfortably?â Gyro asked.
âI guess. You didnât have to get a room at such an expensive place, you idiot.â
Gyro chuckled at the insult, knowing that Johnny didnât mean a word of it. âI know I didnât have to, but I wanted to get the nicest room I could so we could all be comfortable.â
Johnny blushed and snuggled even closer to Gyro. âThanks...â
âWhat for?â Gyro inquired.
âI donât know⊠Everything? Youâve done so many nice things for me over the time weâve known each other and I never thanked you so I figured Iâd do it now I guessâŠâ
Gyro smiled and rested his head on top of Johnnyâs. âYouâre welcome.â
The pair stayed there for a bit before Gyro called room service to get them some dinner. He ordered some gorgonzola and tomato risotto and some spinach and lobster spaghetti with a side of ale bread with mint and bilberry jam. He also got a few bottles of wine and some water for Margret.
Once the food arrived, Gyro woke Margret up so she could eat. They enjoyed their dinner, then Margret took a bath, brushed her teeth, and went back to bed. Johnny and Gyro sat on their bed, sipping wine and chatting. Gyro had his arm around Johnnyâs shoulders again and both their faces were flushed from the alcohol they were drinking. They had enjoyed a whole bottle of wine by the time Johnny said, âHey Gyro, I think I might know whoâs kid Margret isâŠâ
Gyro raised his eyebrows, intrigued by what his racing partner had said. âOh really? Whoâs bambina is she then?â
Johnny shifted himself so he was facing Gyro. âWell, I once knew someone who looked just like her. He had the same hair, the same eyesâŠâ Johnny trailed off, tears welling up in his eyes.
âWho was he, Johnny? Iâm on the edge of my seat here!â
âHe was⊠my brother, Nicholas.â
Gyroâs jaw dropped. âDo you really think sheâs his daughter? Those features are pretty common.â He replied.
Johnny wiped his eyes with his arm. âYeah. I really do. I donât know why he never told me about her, but I think sheâs his.â
âWho do you think the mother is?â Gyro asked, chomping at the bit to learn more about Margret.
Johnny thought for a moment before answering. âHe was dating this girl, I think her name was Faith Greene-â
âMaybe she was born out of wedlock and thatâs why nobody was told!â Gyro interrupted.
âThey never did get marriedâŠâ Johnny noted.
Gyro smacked his fist onto his hand like a judgeâs gavel. âI think weâve cracked the case! We can ask Margret about it in the morning.â
Johnny nodded. âYeah, good idea.â
Gyro chuckled. âLetâs drink a bit more and then try to get some sleep.â
âAlright.â Johnny snuggled back up to Gyro and poured himself some more wine.
The Stubborn Child Chapter Two
Just as they were about to go search for the little girl, she walked back over to them with a small blue bird in her hands. She looked up at them. âWhatâs wrong? You look upset.â
Gyro stared at her for a moment in disbelief before shouting, âWhere were you?! We were worried about you- wait a minute, whatâs your name so I can scold you better?â
The little girl looked confused for a moment, then tentatively responded, âMargret.â
Gyro was about to scold her more thoroughly, but then he noticed the bird. âUm, whatâs with the bird?"
"Sheâs my friend! Her name is Birdie.â
Johnny rolled his eyes. âSo you wandered off to get a bird? Thatâs it? Really?âÂ
âYeah, so what? Why do you care?â Margret whined at him.
âBecause itâs not safe for a little girl to be wandering around on her own.â Gyro explained.
Margret looked down in embarrassment. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry for running off.â
Johnny put his hands on his hips and looked down at her. âAs you should be! Gyro was gonna have a heart attack if we couldnât find you!â
The freckled girl hugged her bird in fear of what Johnny had suggested. Gyroâs eyes widened and he rushed to comfort her. âNow now, itâs ok. That wonât actually happen, Johnnyâs just exaggerating. Thank you for worrying about me though!â
Magret let out a sigh of relief. âOh...â
Johnny snickered. âDid you actually think I was beinâ serious?! Gyroâs not that old!â
âIâm not old at all! Iâm only 24!â
âYeah, and Iâm 19! Youâre 5 years older than me! Iâm barely even an adult! You have a medical degree! Iâve only had two jobs in my whole life! Iâm pretty sure Iâve only told you about one of them⊠Wait! That doesnât matter! What Iâm tryinâ to say is that youâre old! So there!â
âNo! Youâre just really young! You know what, I donât want to argue anymore! Why do we always end up doing this?! Can we please just focus on helping Senorina Margret find her family?â
"Mmmm⊠No. Mamaâs back home." Margret said, looking up at the pair.
"Wait⊠Does she know you're here?" Gyro and Johnny exclaimed simultaneously.
"Yes and no." She answered.
Gyro shook his head then asked, âWhat do you mean by that?â
âShe knows I left but she doesn't know exactly where I am.â
âHow long ago did you leave home?!â Gyro asked.
âI donât really know. I didnât bring a calendar.â
"Calendar?!" Johnny chimed in, âHow far away do you live?!â
âI donât know! Iâm only 10!" She replied, slightly annoyed.
âWell do you at least know where youâre going?â Gyro inquired.
Magret looked down at her feet as if she was questioning that herself. âNot reallyâŠâ
âAre you kidding me?!â Johnny interrupted, more annoyed than before.
âNoâŠ"Â
"Wow. What are we gonna do with her?" Johnny asked his racing partner.
"Why are you asking me?"Â
"Gyroooooo!!"Â
âWhaaaaaat?"
"What are we going to do with the kid?! She doesnât know where sheâs going! She might get hurt!â
âSince when do you care?â
"Uh⊠I donât. Itâs just⊠Uh⊠Youâre annoying!" Johnny stuttered through his words, slightly more annoyed.Â
Gyro smiled slightly. âAlright, you know what? We have the day off and you seem like youâre getting tired. Why donât we find a hotel so we can rest for a bit?â
Johnny smiled, his cheeks flushing at the realization that Gyro was sacrificing his day off just for him. âYeah, good idea Gyro.â
Gyro chuckled, lifted Margret onto his horse, then mounted Valkyrie himself. âNow to find ourselves a place to stay.â
The Stubborn Child Chapter One
It was the 5th stage of the Steel Ball Run Race and our heroes were in Chicago, Illinois. Gyro and Johnny rode their horses down the streets of the city. It was a normal day, Gyro was laughing as Johnny yelled at him. âFor the last time, Gyro, I donât care about your belt!â Johnny complained.Â
âOk, ok!â The taller blonde conceded, âI wonât talk about it anymore if you really hate it that much. I thought youâd find it funny but then again, youâve never really laughed at any of my jokes.â
"Cuz maybe youâre not as funny as you think you are."
Gyro laughed again at the suggestion and was about to change the subject when he noticed a small figure walking towards them. âHey Johnny, did you see that?â
âYou really think Iâm gonna fall for that? Thatâs the oldest trick in the book!â Johnny retorted, still annoyed about the belt joke.Â
âIâm being serious! Look!â Gyro pointed in the direction of the figure he had seen.
Johnny turned around but nobody was there. âReally? That joke was the worst one youâve made so far.â
Gyro looked back to where the figure had been and it was, indeed, not there. âIt was just there, I swear! Where could it have gone in such a short amount of time?â
Johnny shrugged. âYouâre just seeinâ things.â
Gyro rubbed his eyes and turned back around so he was facing forward again. âMaybe youâre right. I should get my eyes checked.â
Just as they were preparing to start moving again, a small voice floated up from the ground below. âDaddy?â
Gyro jumped at the sound so hard he fell off of his horse, Valkyrie, and hit the ground with a thump. Once he got his bearings, he sat up and looked around for the source of the voice. He looked in front of Johnnyâs horse, Slow Dancer, and saw a little girl with light brown hair that she wore in two long braids standing there. âWhat the heck?! Whatâs this kid doinâ here?â
âI told you I saw something, but you didnât believe me!â
âWell how was I supposed to know there was a kid runninâ around here?!â
âI did tell you, but you didnât listen!â
âYou didnât say it was a kid!â
âI didnât know it was a kid!â
The aforementioned kid stood in front of Slow Dancer, watching the two men bicker like an old married couple. She looked at one, then at the other, and promptly decided that these two must be a package deal in one way or another. She walked over to Gyro, stared at him for a moment, and then asked, quite matter-of-factly, âDaddy?â
Gyro pondered for a moment about the situation he was in, looked up at Johnny, and pleaded, âCan we keep her?â
Johnny wondered if this was another one of Gryoâs jokes. âAre you insane?! We canât just take a kid off the street! She probably has parents! Weâd be arrested for kidnapping! What is wrong with you?!â
The taller man looked at the girl, back at Johnny, and around at their surroundings. âI donât see anyone else around who looks old enough to be her parent.â
Johnny checked to see if Gyroâs claim was accurate. âHuh. I guess youâre right for once.â
Gyro looked proud for a moment before he processed Johnnyâs statement. âThat was rude! Iâll have you know that Iâm right quite often.â
âOh yeah? Name one other time youâve been right.â
âHmm, letâs see. Maybe when I said I saw something right before this kid called us both daddy?!â
âWill you shut up about that already?â
âI was just answering your question.â Gyro huffed.
âAnd I told you to shut up!â
The little girl followed the argument like it was a game of ping pong, looking from one man to the other as they yelled at each other. âWait! Please stop yelling Daddy!â She screamed, not really knowing which one of them she was screaming at anymore.
They both immediately stopped yelling and stared at her in confusion. The only problem was that she wasnât there anymore. They looked behind them, finding her there. Gyro stood up quickly and walked behind Valkyrie with his hand on her to let her know he was there so she wouldnât kick, which made it easier to move the girl out of harmâs way. âWhat do you think youâre doing?! You could have gotten hurt! Horses kick very hard you know.â
"Maybe I just want attention." She stated, looking at the two.
Gyro looked at Johnny and back at the girl. âYou know what? I donât know if I believe that. Can you please tell me the real reason you did that?â
âIt's the truth."
âAlright, if you say so. I wonât push it any further.â
"Sure ya won't." Johnny said, rolling his eyes.
âI promise that I wonât pry into this young ladyâs life any more than I already have. Besides, itâs not like I would get any answers even if I did.â
"It's true. Everyone in my hometown calls me âthe stubborn childâ.â the girl interrupted.
Gyro smiled at her. âThatâs not a bad trait to have. Johnny can be stubborn sometimes but I still like him enough to keep him around.â
âHey! You like me more than enough to just keep me around and you know it!â Johnny snapped.
"Jealous much?" The girl inquired.
Johnnyâs face went beet red. âW-Why would I be jealous of a random little girl? That doesnât make any senseâŠâ
"I mean I guess but your face says otherwise." She said with a big grin on her face.
Johnnyâs face flushed an even deeper shade as Gyro looked up at him questioningly. âActually, now that she mentions it, Why are you blushing so much?â
Johnny looked away, embarrassed. âN-No reasonâŠâ
"SureâŠ" The girl said, smirking up at the blonde on the horse. Then hears him mumbling poutily, "Shut up. I don't have to listen to a kid."
"I heard that you know," She said, then mumbled, "Mr. Grumpy Pants."
"Why you little-"
âJohnny, leave the young lady alone! She hasnât done anything to warrant that kind of reaction, now has she?â Gyro said, unknowing of what they mumbled.
"Did ya seriously not hear her, she's standinâ right next to ya for cryinâ out loud!" Johnny said, much more flustered than heâd like to be.Â
"You started it!" The girl said.
"Johnny, what did you do?" Gyro asked.
" Really!? Are you really going to believe her, just like that? " Johnny replied.
"No. Just sounds like something you would do." Gyro remarked.
"WowâŠ"
"So⊠what did you do?" Gyro asked.Â
Johnny whispered underneath his breath. "I saidâŠâŠ"
"What did you say?"
"IâŠ." Johnny said very quietly.Â
Gyro huffed then asked the girl, "What did he say?"
"He told me to shut up, so I called him Mr. Grumpy Pants." She answered.
Gyro paused for a second, then said, "Wait⊠really? That's why you were mad?"Â
âNo! Yes? MaybeâŠâ Johnnyâs face flushed bright red again, just as it had started to go back to normal.
"Seriously?" Gyro asked.
"I⊠where did the kid go?" Johnny asked.
âOh no! We lost her! What are we going to do!?â
"We didn't lose her. You did" Johnny stated.
âWhat the heck man?! We were both watching her!â
âMmhmm. Since when are we responsible for that kid?â
âI mean⊠Uh⊠I guess weâre technically not but I still want to make sure sheâs okâŠâ
Johnny was about to yell at Gyro again but then he paused. Gyro looked at him questioningly. âDonât you have some sort of witty response?â
Johnny looked away. âNah. I donât wanna fight anymore. Letâs just look for the kid.â
