Just read a tweet that said “OHSHC isn’t something that should be adapted nowadays because it’s too controversial” and… honestly, media literacy is dead.

Like—yes. Of course Ouran High School Host Club has flaws. It was made in the early 2000s. A lot of jokes aged poorly. Some portrayals are clumsy. But what people miss is that even with those flaws, it was wildly progressive for its time. OHSHC was never meant to be just another shojo. It was a shojo, yes, but also a commentary on shojo. It took the ridiculous gender roles, the classism, the romantic clichés—and exaggerated them to absurdity. And somehow, behind the parody, it still managed to say some genuinely radical things for its time. It was playing with the genre while being in love with it.

It was campy, chaotic, full of contradictions—but still managed to deliver genuine emotion and character growth. It wanted to say something. It tried.

That’s why it’s the perfect candidate for a remake—not because it was flawless, but because it wasn’t. Because a modern adaptation could take all of that potential and update it with the care and nuance it always deserved.

... Meanwhile, half of today’s shonen still rely on fanservice, outdated gender roles, and paper-thin female characters and somehow no one bats an eye.
