FINAL 1

“Which is Superior?”

My aim in this experiment is to produce a portrait using different mediums. So far I have used graphite, brush pen, graphics tablet and watercolour paint.

The purpose behind this series of portraits is to show that despite using differing techniques with the same and different mediums, you can still produce a similar mood and subject thus expressing there are no limitations in choosing any specific tool. I also aimed to show that it shouldn’t matter what medium you use as it is still ‘art’. There is pros and cons to each medium however one should not really be seen as a superior tool to another as it truly depends on the artist’s abilities and techniques.

“Finding Utopia”

The purpose behind Finding Utopia is an attempt to gather ideas from others as to what they think as being Perfect. Seeing as Universal Perfection does not exist, it was interesting to see both the similarities and striking differences of each individual’s concept of paradise. I asked fifteen different people through personal messaging (via social media hub Facebook) to “in one sentence, describe your Utopia” and then secondly depending on their response, “And what does that look like?” Aside from this, the only other information I gave was a differing word to ‘utopia’ if they weren’t sure what I was referring to. To one individual whom gave multiple answers, after their first, I informed them to not be restricted by reality resulting to a more vibrant response in both concept and detail.

Then, with the use of paper and markers, I rewrote each response adding quick messy doodles to response that gave detail to the physical attributes of their Utopia. Of course these scribbles are no master pieces as I gave myself limited time to both come up with an idea and drawing it out. In a sense they scribbles are the ‘concept art’ behind my interpretation of other’s stories. They are messy and lack in appeal as so not to steal away from the text- which I wanted to be the main focus.

The overall concept behind this work is similar to quite clique documentation and experimentation to find “what is beauty” however instead I am more interested in a physical world rather than an individual person/object’s appearance.

The main issue of this artwork was approaching how to display it. At first I thought to combined elements of each individual’s utopia however felt it would be better to kept them all separate thus not taking away each story. Instead I wrote them all out on cards and grouped them in accordance to their similarities.

For the most part, they can all be linked in terms of ideology. A common aspect by far is equality, respect and freedom of expression. As for physical world attributes, the majority of them incorporate warmth, sunshine and nature- separated into two main landscapes (beach and forest). The only except to this was one referring to being warm indoors during winter. This alone emphasises the phrase “one person’s trash is another’s treasure” – in this situation is being the contrast of summer and winter, indoors and out.

All in all, I am quite satisfied with this project. The only other adjustment I’d make besides perhaps the images drawn to go with the text would be to have each person to draw their own interpretation and compare it to my own which would then lead to showing differing interpretations of scenarios.

CULTIVATED EXPERIMENTS

“Open For Business”

Open For Business is a small book of headlines I created by going through newspapers and tearing out headlines then mixing and matching them to create new headings and stories. The purposed of this experiment was to emphasise the importance of context, especially when referring to bias in the media regarding stories such as politics, war, education, health and so on. I wanted to truly express how that adding and removing even just one word can completely recreate the meaning of anything. The title Open for Business is meant to reflect upon that the media, whether it be News on TV, advertisement, newspapers, internet articles etc, is a business. Their aims are to attract audience’s attention through the use of quick, catchy lines that are often filled with emotion and drama.

To achieve the end result of this experiment, I sorted through a box of cut up headlines, riping apart words from sentences to join them to others. I put myself in the mind set of “if I wanted to catch someone’s attention, how would I do it?” From simple to dramatic lines, I created a small series which I then stuck into a small book. This book is similar to a personal journal however one that a journalist or writer might write down their ideas to use later. I found out quite early in this experiment how easy it is to manipulate context which lead me to wonder how accurate and truthful stories and reports truly are.

Another concept behind Open for Business is to show how easily masses thoughts are manipulated by media and government. Everyone is told what the sources want them to hear. I can say one thing however that doesn’t make it true though through the use of dramatized and emotion, I could persuade- much like how the effects of propaganda work.

I wanted to keep it messy- I did not cut the words neaty, I have physically torn the paper to make it edgy and glued them all together on angles to create visual drama. It is quite noticeable which ones are more successful. I found that the larger the font the better in relation to attracting attention whereas the smaller fonts were better as say a sub-heading which would have more detail and completed sentences in comparison.

If I were to redo this experiment, I would perhaps have made it in the form of a poster incorporating headings, sub-headings and even a story constructed with cut-up, mixed and match words in the format of the front page of a newspaper quite possibly with images. However, given the size and what I have achieved thus far is satisfying to me. ‘Short and Sweet’.

Opening this Saturday (April 26) at the Art Museum of Lugano in Switzerland, 36 ventilators, 4.7m³ packing chips is the new installation by Zimoun, the Bern-based artist known for his architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Zimoun yet again extends his installation inventory. Converting nine of the museum’s towering window spaces into ‘ventilation chambers’ (four ventilators are installed in each window) and filling them with polystyrene, Zimoun unleashes a perfect ‘plastic storm.’ Congregating into a mass that’s neither solid, gaseous nor liquid, the flakes perform a violent, otherworldy dance. With the phenonema trapped behind glass, we get to watch in wonder from the safety of the outside.

FINAL EXPERIMENT RESULTS

The result of this experiment is an ornamental object. Though originally intended for a lighting experiment, after a matte-black coat, I felt it was dull and so ‘brightened it up’ with the use of dry-brushing with metallic-copper acrylic paint to give a rusted, scratched appearance. The reconstruction of the box with the addition of the paint made me less worried about the uneven cutting of the shapes and in the end added more interest to the overall shape.

The need to not make a mess while spray painting the first experiment resulted in the second- a stencil. Though initially dull, I moved the ‘stencil’ slightly to create an overlay of shapes creating an overall more appealing design. The outline created by the box also added interest. In the end I have create an artwork using an unfolded box as my canvas.

This mini stencil idea came about during the process of the first experiment. After a random process that was not planned (in terms of construction), I created a mini stencil and ‘spray area’ utilizing the original boxes structure. Though not fussed about the final image result, random shapes were cut out and then sprayed resulting in a mini inspired version of experiment two.

The personal favourite of all three is the first experiment because of it’s cut-out design and colour. And because it just looks cool. :P

EXPERIMENT 4

(JUST FOR FUN)

Using scraps from experiment three, I tried to make a room however I found that scale was a problem though in the end I produced a round window with a ledge and a large bench-top area.
