I'm glad you remembered me.

i'm always thinking about Solanum and the Hatchling "growing up together" despite being separated by time. the way the Hatchling grows up enamoured by Nomai language and culture and they are able to understand it through tracking Solanum as she grows up and learns the language and culture herself. the way they're both caught in a state of undeath on the cusp of adulthood. and despite the barriers of time and language, Solanum is at the campfire along with all the other astronauts that the Hatchling has known for their entire life.

i've long headcanoned that the Hatchling plays a cello (because of the cello part in 14.3 Billion Years and Morning on the soundtrack), though the instrument i've drawn them with here is designed after a bowed mountain dulcimer. it's more their size!

also, the pen i drew Solanum with in the first piece is mostly because i wanted to draw her in that pose, although having thought about it, it makes sense that kids would be given a more kid-sized version of the staff technology in a way that makes them practice their writing (rather than the keyboard on the staff's tablet) so i stand by it. also also, Solanum's warmer clothes and thicker fur on Brittle Hollow are because of the colder climate!

While I'm thinking about good YouTube videos, I've watched this video essay at least 5 times. It explains why I love Outer Wilds and Project Hail Mary so much and in the same ways, and makes connections between these two stories that I didn't even realize were there.

While the main theme he focuses on for Project Hail Mary isn't exactly how I see the story, I do think he makes a good point anyway. And he explains really well how even though Project Hail Mary and Outer Wilds answer the same question in opposing ways, they do not contradict each other but instead speak to people in different situations. Wow I love this video.

(If somehow you are seeing this and you have only consumed one of these pieces of media, go read/play the other one before finding any more spoilers! I really think anyone who loves one of these two stories will love the other. I think about both of them every single day.)

This video gives some really interesting commentary on the trope of a man alone in space, and it's worth a watch! She also talks about some more subtle differences between the book and the movie that influence the message of the story.

The biggest theme I personally took out of her video is that while there is a place in media for stories about men who become heroes all alone, with their own intrinsic strength, Project Hail Mary has a more realistic and relatable message. It's about a coward, a man who did not have what it takes to save the world. Until he made a meaningful connection with a peer. It's a story about a man who could only save the world when he allowed himself to be vulnerable enough to have a true friend, and that is a very important story to tell.

Just saw Project Hail Mary last night

I avoid major spoilers but skip if you want to go in blind

Beautifully done. Really faithful to the book. Andy Weir was involved and I think it showed. The book is huge and technical so stuff was going to need to be cut but it didn't feel like the story or the pacing were hurt by that necessity. The movie was ~2hrs 40min long and honestly I wish it was longer

Ryan Gosling was incredible. My hot take is that Noah Calhoun in The Notebook prepared him for Ken in Barbie which prepared him for Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary. Grace is a failson. He's both highly educated and incredibly stupid. He can't punch his way out of a wet paper bag without crashing out first. If you've been in academia at all you've encountered this type of person a lot. Gosling did amazing at balancing the loser aspects of Grace, the actual scientific prowess and the emotional vulnerability. Grace felt like a fully actualized character. There were several moments in the movie where Grace experiences an earth shattering realization and Gosling really delivers the emotional payload. My favorite scene that demonstrates this is when Stratt gives him three hours to make a decision and Gosling's character is visibly hit with the reality of his situation in waves. Tiny tiny shifts in his expression as each reality comes crashing down on him just *chef's kiss.* You're supposed to love Grace and root for him because as stupid and annoying as he can be, you want him to succeed. Gosling does that with Grace, you laugh at him, you root for him and you love him. He's a real person you've probably met put in an unimaginable position and the ways he reacts is frankly very understandable. I loved Gosling's performance and I hope it really helps to solidify him as an actor people take seriously because he is gifted and he did an amazing job

I loved how they did Rocky. He sounded exactly how I imagined. He felt intelligent (smarter than Grace for sure) and was just as lovable as I hoped. I loved the voice they chose for his translator software. They had the narrator from the audiobook introduce the movie which was fun because I love how he performed Rocky and I feel like they took inspiration for his translator voice. I was so glad they preserved his humor from the book because it's so easy to make him just a talking animal but I think they walked that line

I wish we got more of Eva Stratt and the other team members from the PHM team since those characters are really fun like DuBois and Ilyukhina for example. Stratt was such a huge part of the book and I was fascinated by her. The situation the world was in, the absolute authority she had to do literally anything to save the world and her own incredible life before this started (she spoke like ten languages???) was just an amazing canvas for this character to shine and I missed that

So so much of the movie matched what I envisioned from Weir's descriptions. From the Hail Mary herself to the tunnel from the airlock, to the canister with star maps to the earth biome on Erid, I found myself saying that's exactly what I imagined. That almost never happens for me when watching movie adaptations

The actual cinematography was amazing. I'm a sucker for clever transitions, lens flares, beautifully framed shots and symbolism. This movie really delivers all of that. Beautifully shot, amazing immersive sets and excellent supporting roles

10/10 I need this on dvd immediately
