Optimum TV Character Designs

These were some character designs that I worked on, on and off, between Smile Train deadlines. The characters are all TV channels - and these are maybe a fraction of the whole number of designs we worked on till we got to the ones at the end, which we liked. Most of the designs are mine, but Jeremy and I co-worked on the boxy ones which was cool. I got to learn Illustrator thanks to his workflow (I made all my designs in Photoshop, which in hindsight was...slow. Illustrator is good, great, excellent.)

SmileTrain 400 Directed and Animated by Joan Chung, at Polyester Studio

I’ve been interning at Polyester Studio for the past month and half, and it’s been pretty cool.

This is a 15 sec (that expanded to a 25 sec) spot that I directed/animated for SmileTrain, a non-profit team that offers free cleft lip and palate surgery to children around the world.

The timeframe for pre-production & production was one month and two weeks, which was pretty generous. (I worked on some character designs with Jeremy (Polyester Studio’s co-founder) on a project for Optimum when the spot needed to be approved by the agency and its clients. I’ll post those later.)

Above are the style frames & rough animation (speed x2). Below are the storyboards/leica and the final spot.

Today, a summary in sketches

At 1:30 my mom brought me to a sushi and noodle shop and we had ramen. At 3:00 we went to Indigo and I sat down to read the Saga omnibus and spied on the people downstairs when I finished. At 5:00 the Starbucks that was inside Indigo had a very happy barista and his foil, a tired security guard. At 6:30 my brother’s school held a winter arts festival and there was a nice drum performance. The girl in the centre had a strong beat.

The four drawings on the bottom are the people from the performance, Larry, fanart of the Grand Budapest Hotel which is best watched with Larry who catches all the scrupulously shot scenes, and my church on Sundays.

A creature that eats a lot of stuff, so I can draw that stuff. It’d be cool if I could draw for children’s encyclopedias all day.

Third year going to the royal winter fair. Brought my sister along and we had a jolly old time. Can’t say the same for one of the sheep, though. Poor sheep, you’ll get your turn.
