This is Roza Eskenazi she was a Jewish-Greek rembetiko singer. Probably one of my favourite musicians of all time. In World War II she used her her privileged position to support the local resistance. She even hid resistance fighters in her home and was able to rescue Jews in both Athens and Thessaloniki.

âIn Boxâ at Giant Robot.
âIn Boxâ is a group exhibition currently on display at GR2 in Los Angeles, California of artwork contained in a 12âł x 12âł box and was curated by artist Audrey Kawasaki. Â In the show, which was incredibly well curated by Kawasaki, every artist was given a simple wooden box to let their imaginations run wild. The results are stellar. Â Artists above: Nomi Chi, Audrey Kawasaki, Tran Nguyen, Edwin Ushiro, Kristina Collantes, Kelsey Beckett and Amy Sol.

Along the Waterâs Edge by Rebecca Green
Emerald flower
These dazzling green beauties are only found in Colombia, where a unique form of mineralisation occurs where the 6 rayed wheels between the green emerald petals of the flower are made of carbon inclusions drawn from the enclosing organic rich shales as it grew. The rays, along with the dark core from which the crystal grew (transparent cores, either colourless or green also exist) reflect the hexagonal crystal structure of beryl, of which emerald and aquamarine are two sub varieties. The formation process and crystal structure are similar to a snowflakeâs since water also crystallises in the hexagonal system. This specimen has an unusual structure for a trapiche stone (as theyâre called in the trade), which normally have fine dark straight rays between straight slices of green gem rather than the petal like manifestation we see here in the 1.7 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm specimen.

Bug of the Day
The rather drab, brown, early spring form of the Red-fringed Emerald (Nemoria bistriaria) made an appearance the other night. I love the almost reflective white bar between the antennae, makes them look like steer :-).

Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God - George Washington Carver
