Is it a figment of my imagination Or has the pigment of an entire nation Become reason enough to oppress, suppress and kill “in the name of justice” Reason to allow murder by those who are meant to protect us
Sadly this is reality Saturated by police brutality Caused by the sick mentality of those trained to serve and protect Who rather choose to shoot and neglect
Who kill innocent black men In front of their families Because they reached for their ID Or for simply selling CDs
Who kill innocent black teens For wearing a hoodie And for carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea
Who kill innocent black women For having a mental illness that could not be subdued For questioning a minor traffic violation with attitude In other words, for having a point of view
They were all unarmed Not a single one of them gave a valid reason for police to be so alarmed
There is one thing that all these have in common One reason this kind of thing happens so often
The crimes were not results of gun possession The single crime they all committed was having a dark complexion Killed because of melanin possession
All murdered due to their skin Not the positions they were in It was all because they possessed extra melanin Which, for whatever reason, is regarded as a mortal sin
So let’s get on thing straight in order to avoid dispute or misimpression The main cause of death was Melanin Possession
