Novel Coronavirus: Know Your Rights at Work
Society’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has raised many questions about the rights of employees.
The government is encouraging people to stay home as much as possible, so if your employer schedules you for a shift, do you have to go in?
The Ontario government has passed emergency legislation to make sure your job is secure. If you are forced to stay home from work because of the virus, you won’t lose your job. With schools and daycares shut down, you may be unable to go to work because you need to stay home with your children during the day. You may be forced into self-isolation because of recent travel or cold symptoms, which would make it unsafe to go to work. Your rights as a worker will also be protected if you have to stay home to care for a family member who has COVID-19.
Taking time off work doesn’t always mean forgoing an income. Your sick leave policy may allow you paid sick days, or you could potentially request to use holiday time. If you are a unionized employee, your collective agreement will outline how much sick leave you to have.
