The end.
After 5 years and over 1000 posts, my time on Tumblr is coming to an end. I haven’t posted anything in over half a year, and that seems like a sign to move on. A lot has happened this year, so much that there’s no way I could possibly bring it all up like I usually do. The last time I posted, season 5 of Game of Thrones was still coming out, and Digimon Adventure tri. seemed like a far-off dream. The movie was pretty good, by the way.
Two of my favourite things from the last half a year are the new Wonder Years album, and Life is Strange. No Closer to Heaven took some getting used to, but it’s a fantastic album filled with meaning. I finished Life is Strange this week, and it’s a wonderful game. It’s lovely and unique with a vibrant world to explore and a captivating story and characters.
It’s been an eventful year. There have been some real highs, and some heavy lows. ‘I aged a year this week’ has never felt more true. I’m pretty much the same, just trying to be a better person.
I’ve seen thousands of amazing and hilarious posts on this site, and followed some really cool people. To everyone that ever liked one of my posts, thanks for playing.
What do you think the meaning of every song on the album is? Aaron west and the roaring twenties I mean.
I got this message over a year ago, and I swore I’d answer it eventually. Instead of discussing the overarching meaning of each song, I pointed out what I thought was significant in each one. Each song is like a chapter in the story of Aaron West, and they come together to tell a complete story. I listened to the album while writing this. I could be way off base with my interpretation of the album, but here we go:Our Apartment sets the scene for the rest of the album. Ittells us that Aaron’s wife has left him, that he misses her, and that she wasthe one that ended the relationship. It shows us that he doesn’t really knowhow to handle the situation, and this is explored more in the rest of the songson the album. It’s about that awkward period after a relationship where you’restill trying to realise that it really is over.
Grapefruit is my favourite song on the album, and one of themost eventful ones as well. It shows Aaron’s struggle to believe in a God thatisn’t there for him during this difficult time, the blame he feels for thefailure of his relationship, and his alcoholic tendencies. We also learn about hisdaughter that was never born, and the toll that it took on him. The songhighlights the pain and turmoil that Aaron’s turn of events has brought uponhim. Feeling abandoned by God, he resigns himself to alcoholism, and acceptshis perceived place as a burden.
St. Joe Keeps Us Safe shows us a glimmer of hope. Aarontakes a walk, and still wishes Dianne would save him, but he’s slowly movingpast sleeping in late and punching holes in drywall. It tells us more aboutAaron’s family; his mother is devoutly religious, and his father is dead. Aaronconfesses his fears and thoughts to his mother, and she tells him that she’sstill there for him. It’s about the support that Aaron’s mom tries to give him,and the start of his quest to try to overcome his situation. It shows that hemakes some progress after Grapefruit.
Aaron is remembering some good times with Dianne. He seemsto be driving aimlessly, to travel on the road while trying to figure thingsout. I don’t really have much to bring to the table on this one. The line aboutdaylilies is very important, thanks to the reference to it later, in CarolinaCoast.
Divorce and the American South is about Aaron’s desire toreconnect with Dianne. He wishes she’d answer his calls, and it seems he won’tgive up on her no matter what. He’s trying to quit smoking in an effort toimprove himself, seemingly in part, at least, because she doesn’t like thecoughing fits that he gets from smoking. Again, Aaron expresses blame andregret at the loss of their unborn child, and for not being there for Dianneduring this difficult time. The dream mentioned at the end of the song showsthat while he wishes Dianne would still care about him, he doesn’t believe thatshe does at this point.
The Thunderbird Inn brings to light how Aaron appears toothers at this time. The clerk at the hotel comments on his appearance, as doesthe homeless man who actually apologises for asking Aaron for change. He looksdishevelled to the point where even the homeless man takes pity on him, andtries to raise his spirits. The line about the bar tells us that Aaron is stilldrinking heavily. Aaron is struggling financially, but drinks anyway. The lastverse indicates that he drinks to numb the pain from the death of his unbornchild and the fact that Dianne doesn’t love him anymore. The only small merciesin his life are his half-tank of gas, and the bottle he’s drinking from, whichshows how little he has left, and to look forward to.
Get Me Out of Here Alive, another personal favourite, shows Aaronturning further away from religion. He feels like his mother has lied to himabout divine grace. The verse about the church suggests that while Aaron canstill feel God flowing through others, he himself still feels forsaken. Hefeels alone. We’ve gone from ‘like you’re next to me, arm-in-arm’ to 'you’renot walking next to me’. The appearance of the sky, 'fractured and outlines’,seems to connect with an idea in his mind that heaven has actually beendestroyed, and that is why God has been neglecting him. Weak in his currentsituation, he asks for someone (God? Dianne?) to save him.
You Ain’t No Saint tells us that Aaron and Dianne met youngand fell in love quickly. Dianne expresses discontent at how Aaron changed ashe grew up. Finally, in this song, Aaron points out that Dianne is not perfect. He shows that he’s aware of how physically and emotionally damaged he is in hiscurrent state. He reminisces about the good times he had watching football withhis father, and the impact that he had on his life. Now that he’s dead, Aaronhas to make his way through life without him. With all the change that Aaronhas gone through, he’s not even sure if his own father would recognise him now.The song is about Aaron recognising faults, both within himself and Dianne.
Carolina Coast starts by telling us that Aaron is near thesea in Carolina, which relates to a lot of the imagery present within the song. For the first time on the album, he muses over his own death, and his idea ofdeath by drowning seems very peaceful. He seems to relate the idea of wadingthrough shallow waters (slow, laborious, tiring) to chasing after 'the ghost ofDianne’, which seems to bring some light to his wandering as well. Aaron hasmanaged to quit smoking. While he instinctively reaches for his lighter, he nolonger has any cigarettes, as he made a conscious effort to throw them away. This shows some more personal progress on Aaron’s side. The daylilies are referenced again in this song as a metaphor, representingAaron’s hopes of a renewed relationship with Dianne. We are told that they are deadand dry. Aaron’s attempt to bring them back to life shows his love for Dianneand how determined he is to save his marriage. The old boat fighting the tidefills Aaron with the will to keep going, despite the state he’s in. He refusesto give up on his quest to reunite with Dianne, and the album ends on a hopefulnote.
This was fun.
5 000 Question Survey - Part Twelve
The final one.
This had me crying with laughter. Jarrod Alonge’s album is just as good as I thought it would be.
The Digimon trailer was worth the wait, if only it were coming out sooner.
Free Comic Book Day was pretty cool. I got the free Pokemon and Secret Wars comics, and bought Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland.
So it turns out I've been missing Say Anything's self-titled album this entire time. No idea how that happened. I spent today listening to that and playing The Wolf Among Us on the gaming PC that I bought from my friend last week. The Wolf Among Us is excellent; I'm gonna download the last three chapters overnight and play them tomorrow.
Throwback to that time Soupy replied to my message on AbsolutePunk.
The next four episodes of Game of Thrones have leaked. What a time to be alive.
Stuff and things:
- I switched jobs this week. I had my last day working in the toy store on Sunday, and then started at the book store on Tuesday. It’s been interesting so far; the only downside is the till system, which is running a Linux program from 1997. It’s been a welcome change though.
- I caught up on Suits and The Walking Dead recently, and I’m glad I did. They were both really boring for one and half seasons, and then picked up and became entertaining towards the end.
- While I enjoyed season 5 of Shameless a lot, the finale didn’t feel like a finale. There were bigger moments in other episodes, so it felt a bit weak. Fiona’s character has been ruined, and Lip’s heading that way too. While I predicted that it would happen in the finale, it sucks that they wrote Bianca out of the show this early; her relationship with Frank was my favourite part of this season.
Besides that, not much has been happening. I’ve mostly been getting through projects, playing League and seeing friends.
[Anonymous because I'm online on a tumblr I share with a friend, I don't want to put my personal opinions out to the world through here. Okay, I don't even know why I said that but OH WELL] That video of the REAL reason Zayn left 1D was everything and so much more. THANK YOU FOR SPENDING 3 HOURS MAKING IT, IT MADE MY DAY A LITTLE BETTER to actually get an explaination. God bless. Or Satan bless. However you prefer, sir.
[late reply]I’m glad you enjoyed it; the world had to know.
Just wasted about three hours of my life making this. Enjoy.
I got the job that I wanted at a bookstore. I start in two weeks.
My second lot of mystery skins, from this weekend. Still can’t believe I managed to get Spirit Guard Udyr; I bought Udyr a few days ago in the hopes that I’d get a skin for him. Marauder Warwick and Union Jack Fiddlesticks were nice catches as well. I could do without Dryad Soraka and the skins for champions that I already have skins for, but overall I’m pretty happy with what I got.
Work was interesting.
Update on the job interview: I was nervous, and not quite sure how I did, but I spoke to the lady that interviewed me again today and apparently I made it through to the second interview. Just gotta wait for the phone call now.
