Lon Chaney and Anna Mae Wong are husband and wife in Bits of Life (1921).  Anna was born in Los Angeles and was Hollywood’s first Asian-American star.  She had 63 acting credits in her career, from an uncredited bit in 1919 through an appearance on TV’s The Barbara Stanwyck Show in 1961.  In the silent era, she was a slave girl in Thief of Bagdad and Tiger Lily in Peter Pan.  She transitioned well into talkies including a part in Shanghai Express (1932) with Marlene Dietrich, although she was typically typecast in supporting parts.

So, I just read up on Anna Mae Wong and they did her a disservice as well… They minimized what she went through and her response in Ryan Murphy’s Crash golden age Hollywood edition. They said she had a screentest for The Good Earth, as the lead, and it was amazing, but she still didn’t get the part… The reality is that she straight up asked to be the lead character, O-Lan but the studio offered her the concubine role instead.   She replied, and I quote:

“I’ll be glad to take the test, but I won’t play the part,” she’d said, per the L.A. Times. “If you let me play O-lan, I’ll be very glad. But you’re asking me—with Chinese blood—to do the only unsympathetic role in the picture, featuring an all-American cast portraying Chinese characters.”

I got really, really fed up with BTVS in its fifth season, which proved in the fullness of time to be my spidey-sense tingling re: Joss Whedon. But I never stopped loving most of the characters or any of the actors, and Anthony Stewart Head was always one of my absolute favorites.

(And he also made a marvelous Sir Walter Elliot!)
